My daughter has regular poster paints, stickers, face paints that she'll bring for the kids. And she wants to work with any adult that will volunteer to supervise the kids. On our end we have 1 kid but she has her pumpkin that she'll bring.?

If I remember correctly it was potluck last few parties? If not each family could bring a pack of hotdogs, sausages, and burgers. I'm happy to stand by the grill for everyone.?

Below are few things that people can volunteer to do and bring

1. Set up

2. Clean up

3.Parade around the block with kids. (Bring your noise makers)

?4. Paper plates, cups, forks and napkins

5. 3 or 4 tables at least.

6. Fruits and regular salad.( that's if we are doing burgers and dogs.?

Lastly but not the least bring your beverages, water, wine, beer,?

Angela has some decorations for us that will make the place more festive. If anyone has anything else to add or subtract. Feel free.?

Community Security Walk

Rally at the corner of Kentucky and Independence Avenue on Wednesday, the 24th (after the O&CS meeting!) at 9PM to join your neighbors and MPD for a security walk. ?The walk is dedicated to Meg Mitcham, a neighbor on 11th Street and driving force behind previous security walks who is, sadly, moving off the Hill. ?We'll be passing out notes encouraging people to keep on their porch lights.

Safety Festival

A reminder about tomorrow's Ward 6 Safety Festival at the Brent School from 11AM to 4PM. ?The event will feature a raffle, live music, Fire and Emergency Services displays, MPD displays, a Womens' Self-Defense clinic and a variety of other activities. ?The event will raise money for the Maslin family. ?

I was up walking one of our neighbors dogs around 9:30ish and ran into two boys who are probably about 10 and 11 years old.
Heading south on our sidewalk, one was with cellphone. I was coming out of Gessford court when I ran into them. I abruptly stopped to see what they were up to. Realizing that, they stopped and the little one went towards Gessford. The older turned looked at me and asked why I was watching him. Told them its late and they should be home. A few items of interest:

15 October Zoning Commission Hearing on Hine

The Zoning Commission (ZC) met Monday night to review and deliberate the Hine zoning order. ?The Commission did not provide the draft order to the public, as it is, at this stage, considered priviliged communications between the Office of Attorney General (OAG) and the ZC. ?While this made it difficult to follow in lock step with the conversation, a few points were clear. ?First, the ZC wanted the developer to continue working on designs for the loading bay to more effectively accommodate truck traffic. ?Second, the ZC asked the developer, the OAG and the ANC to tighten language incorporating the Construction Management Agreement (CMA) and the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) into the Zoning Order. ?The CMA provides mitigations and protections to residents and businesses during construction, and the MOA outlines post-construction mitigations and community benefits. ?The ZC wants the Zoning Order to explicitly and more absolutely incorporate the CMA and MOA into the Order, strengthening the ability to enforce both agreements. ?This is a good move that will aid the neighborhood in the long run. ?Lastly, the ZC asked the Developer to identify, by-name, the recipient and executor of funds for improvements to the Eastern Market Metro plaza (approximately $75K). ?The Developer is charged to respond to these requests by October 29th, with the next ZC deliberation occurring on the 16 of November. ?

Hill Safety Festival

Attached please find a flyer detailing the Ward 6 Fall Safety Festival, this Sunday from 11AM to 4PM. ?As the flyer indicates, there will indeed be "something" for everyone. ?Not on the flyer, but worth noting, Capitol Hill Martial Arts and Fitness Academy will host a free womens' self-defense clinic during the day (stay tuned for the exact time). ?

Rally for School Libraries

If you have some time to support school libraries, the Capitol Hill Public School Parents Organization (CHPSPO) is organizing a Save School Libraries rally at the Wilson Building from 9AM to 2PM. ?There are approximately 16,000 students in 57 DC schools with no librarians, and many libraries with no books--not a good situation.

DC Fire and Emergency Provides Free Smoke Detectors

Fire Chief Kenneth Ellerbe shared his vision for DC Fire and Emergency Services at last week's ANC meeting. ?Chief Ellerbe discussed a likely shift in procurement from fire apparatus to emergency vehicles (ambulances) to better accommodate increased demand for emergency services. ?He also stated that residents should consider fire houses to be "safe places", capable of assisting with a variety of concerns. ?The Fire Department is also providing and installing free smoke detectors. ?Residents can call 673-3331 to set up an appointment to pick up a smoke detector or schedule an installation. ?Lastly, the Chief asked residents to help FEMS by pulling over and giving the right of way when they see emergency vehicles.

This year's event will be pretty great.  (SUNDAY, 10/21 from 11-4 at Brent and the surrounding parks).  DCFD will be there with trucks and that big inflatable slide.  Brent is getting 2 moonbounces, a dj, and an inflatable obstacle course.  The legion is hosting a wine-and-beer garden opening at 11:00 and Chef Bonk from Sonoma is bringing a couple grills and smokers.

Happy Friday neighbors,
I'm looking to borrow a folding table for the kids activity tomorrow at our annual Gessford Court Octoberfest party. I can pick it up.
I know it's late and to early for costumes but have your little ones come dress in their favorite costumes.
There will be face painting plus pumpkin decorations so have your kids bring their pumpkins too.

Safety Update and Future Events

Some good news - at last week's PSA 107 meeting, Lt. Fowler, MPD, reported a year-over-year decrease in total crime (from 114 in September 2011 to 95 in 2012) and a month-over-month decrease in burglaries. ?Unfortunately, thefts from auto remain unreasonably high (45 in September). ?As an example of tactical activity to tamp down on the recent crime spike, MPD recently formed a second bicycle tactical unit which succeeded in stopping a burglary in progress. ?

Tonight at 6:30PM at Brent Elementary (301 North Carolina Ave SE), fellow Commissioner Kirsten Oldenburg hosts?MAKING OUR COMMUNITY SAFER MEETING #2. ?The meeting includes a presentation from?the organizers of the Ward 6 Fall Safety Festival (Sun Oct 21).? Following this, at 7pm, Samantha Nolan, Neighborhood Watch Trainer, will speak about the many ways we can reduce our chances of becoming a victim of a crime. ?

On the 21st, CHAMPS is sponsoring the above mentioned Ward 6 Fall Safety Festival and fund raiser for the Maslin family at Brent Elementary School from 11AM to 4PM. ?A women's self-defense clinic, fire department displays and MPD equipment are a few of the featured events.

Kim Brenegar Park

At Tuesday's ANC6B meeting, ANC6B voted unanimously to endorse a project proposal from Friends of Kim Brenegar Park to accelerate and finish restoration of the park at 8th and North Carolina Ave. ?The $52K project will purchase permeable surfacing for the center of the park, lighting, signage and supplies. ?I am happy to sponsor this request and look forward to moving it forward to the District Department of Transportation for final approval and obligation of funds. ?Hopefully it will help to improve a dead space in our community while also serving as a great example of the benefits performance parking can bring to our neighborhood. ?Check out??to see the full plans for the space and progress to date. ?

Closure of the 300 block of 7th St

ANC6B also voted on Tuesday to support the closure of the 300 block of 7th St during Hine Construction. ?The resolution remained agnostic on the question of who should run market activity at this location (Eastern Market proper, current independent flea market operators or a different 3rd party), but did ask the City to abide by certain principles regardless of who operates the market at this location. ?First, the resolution asked the City to follow DC Code 37-109, which specifies that any vending needs to be coordinated with the District agency that control the market. ?Second, it asked that, should the City opt to contract an independent manager to operate the markets, any contracting activity should be legal, fair and transparent. ?Last, it specified that any revenues from contracting activity should go into the budget for Eastern Market (vice the General Fund or an unrelated City agency, such as DCPS). ?You can view the full text of the resolution at .

The Zoning Commission will render it's final decision on the development on the 15th of October. ?I suspect that they will unanimously approve the project. ?ANC6B and several community groups submitted supplemental filings responding to the applicant's latest submission on the 8th of October. ?ANC6B emphasized it's support for accommodating all large truck operations in the development's loading bay, requested inclusion of specific provisions in the final zoning order and asked the Zoning Commission to fully enforce directed changes to trash collection plans for the North Building. ?

late night bike cruisings?

Hello Neighbors,

Was just wondering if anyone else has noticed a group of young males (15-22ish) cruising down the middle our street late at night on bikes?? The group varies in number- anywhere from 3-7 individuals and I have noticed it twice in the last week (both times between the hours of 10:30pm and midnight).? It is of some concern, especially since the police presence seems to have tapered since the Maslin arrests...

Just wanted everyone to be aware, I'm not sure what they're up to, but it's definitely out of the ordinary. Please consider turning on your porch lights at night if you don't do so already.
