Neighbors, A few quick items: ?O&CS TF Meeting on Vacant & Blighted Properties? The ANC6B Outreach & Constituent Services TF will be meeting tomorrow at 7PM at the Hill Center to continue research efforts on vacant and blighted property best practices. ?Our special guest is Kim Graziani, a subject matter expert on vacant and blighted property policy with the Center for Community Progress. ?Kim was the Director of Neighborhood Capacity Building in Pittsburgh and helped the City of New Orleans craft it's regulations on vacant and blighted property policy while with Community Progress. ?She'll be sharing her insights on how other jurisdictions deal with vacant and blighted properties. The O&CS TF is most interested in crafting recommendations that improve the process of classifying vacant and blighted properties and dealing with properties that, once identified, languish on vacant and blighted rolls. ?
Hill Center Open House The Hill Center hosts it 2nd annual open house this Saturday from 10:30 to 2:00PM. ?There will be performances by Step Afrika and other groups, as well as activities for children and adults alike. ?If you haven't yet had an opportunity to visit this great neighborhood resource, this is an excellent opportunity to do so.Maslin Case Arrests As posted by others, MPD has made 3 arrests of suspects in the brutal beating of TC Maslin. ?We should track this case as it proceeds, and, should the suspects prove to be guilty, be prepared to energize preparation of Community Impact Statements to influence sentencing. ?
Closure of NE Library for Renovation, Opening of Rosedale Library and extended hours at the SE Library As many of you know, the NE Library was recently closed for extensive renovations. ?Our astute neighbor, Denise Johnson, recently enquired about extended hours at the SE Library to compensate for the loss of the NE Library. ?Below is the response from Anne Phelps, the Council's Staff Director for the Committee on Libraries, Parks, Recreation and Planning: ?
? ?Wednesdays, so that there is full weekday coverage in the greater Hill community. The hours are:??

This Saturday
Hey folks. ?Looks like there is a counter protest going on for this Aryian Nation crap that's goin' on this Saturday. ?I'll be there for sure to calmly express my discontent with their views. ?Sara made me promise not to be in jail when all the smoke clears so as long that doesn't happen I should be good.
Anyway, here's the info ?? ?
Warning: I just looked at their website and I'm pretty heated. ?Look at it at your own risk. Paxton Wade Styles |

AND a MOON BOUNCE! Re: HUGE Maury yard sale coming up! - Sept 29th
The Maury's Yard Sale, to be held TWO WEEKS from today on SAT., SEPT 29 from 9-2 is going to be featuring a moon bounce.? We'll be holding the sale on the blacktop at Maury this year instead of the usual triangle park on North Carolina. If it rains, we'll move the sale (and the moonbounce!) inside. Plus there is the Maury playground for the kids to play in while you shop :). And a free parking lot so you can buy loads of great bargains with no worries of transporting it all ?home. Finally if you have stuff in decent shape that isn't too big you can leave it on my porch and i can transport it over there. Antonia 219

I'm?sure?most everyone is aware but in case not H sreet festival is today. ?Also, the NE?library?is having a big book sale before they close for their big renovation. ----- Forwarded Message ----- From: elizabeth nelson To: Maury Sent: Saturday, September 15, 2012 7:58 AM Subject: [maury_elementary] H Street Festival today (9/15)

This is short notice, I know, but if you're looking for a kid-friendly and cheap bit of fun close by, check out the H Street Festival.? It will be set up today on the 800-1300 blocks of H St. from noon-6 p.m.? There will be "art cars" (painted/decorated in beautiful or clever ways), the Baltimore Rock Opera - hard to describe but very entertaining and featuring the sort of costumes young folks would particularly enjoy, Smokey the Bear, children's craft activities (incl. the Capitol Hill Restorations Society booth which I will be manning just west of the 12th St. intersection), plenty of "swag", 4 stages with continuous live entertainment.? There will be several food trucks and also porta-potties.
If you drive,? expect to park several blocks away.? Walk or bike if you can.? There will be places to chain you bikes but the closest ones may be taken.? If you see a convenient lamppost a block of so away, I'd take advantage of it. While I'm thinking of it, Barracks Row Day is next Saturday 11 am - 5pm - similar scene but on a much smaller scale, though in years past, they've had a very nice petting zoo. --Elizabeth aka "Aunt Lizzie" _ |

Quick Updates
Brian Pate
Neighbors, A couple of quick notes: Zoning Commission Hearing on Hine ? On Monday the Zoning Commission (ZC) gave preliminary approval to the Hine development on a 4-0 vote. ?They did ask the developer to do several things before granting final approval, some significant: ?a) they told the developer to accommodate any large trucks in the planned loading bay b) the developer is required to shift trash pick up for the North building from the east side of the building to the west side of the building and c) the developer is required to recalculate the floor area ratio (FAR--essentially the ratio of the total square footage of the building to the total square footage of the lot upon which it resides) without including the area of the newly reopened C St. ?Items a and b are good for the community and I'm glad to see the changes. ? Item C is a wild card, and I'm interested to see what the new FAR will be. ?Frankly we should have caught this during negotiations with the developers, and I don't think they should have presented a FAR calculation without making it clear that the street was incorporated in the denominator of the equation. ?Should the FAR exceed the amount allowable under the requested zoning regime (C2-B), I don't think it will derail the project, but it will merit further deliberation. ?The ZC will render its final decision in early October.
Expansion of Performance Parking ? The Commission voted 10-0 to expand the Performance Parking Pilot to the full area allowed under existing law. ?We made one significant modification to the plan, which I believe will both eliminate the "dinner party" problem and accommodate the needs of Eastern Market merchants and patrons. ?One side of each street will retain the existing RPP hours (Mon-Fri, 7:00AM to 8:30PM, 2-hour visitor parking). ?I appreciate all of the feedback I received and especially the efforts of those who hosted block meetings. ?The comments, constructive criticism and ideas shaped the final form of the plan. ?It will take several months to implement new signage in the pilot area and I will continue to work with residents to ensure the plan is implemented consistently and effectively.
Moonlight Movie in Lincoln Park Council Member Wells is sponsoring the 2nd of two movie nights in Lincoln Park this Saturday night. ?"Madagascar" will begin at dusk. ?My son and I enjoyed the first movie night, and hope to see even more families and friends at this one.
Thank you Frager's Just a quick thanks to Frager's for providing Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs (CFLs) and lamp timers at cost in support of last week's "Do Your Bit, Keep it Lit" walk. ?If you had your porch light off and earned a flyer on your door step, take it to Frager's to receive a steep, steep discount on a new porch light and lamp timer. ?Hopefully you'll use them to illuminate your front door (every small action helps keep our neighborhood safe, right?). ?
Making our Community Safer Meeting #2 On Tue, 9/18, from 7-9pm at ?Brent Elementary School, safety expert Samantha Nolan will give a presentation on how to reduce your chances of becoming a victim of any crime. ?MPD will also be present to give an update on recent burglaries (they recently made a significant arrest). ?This should be a more interactive and focussed meeting than the recent one featuring CM Wells and Chief Lanier. ?Fewer TV cameras = more productive.
As always, please contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Regards, Brian
