The other reason that Wards 7&8 want the eastern end of Capitol Hill is to grab Res13, which will see enormous amounts of investment soon, investment that the councilmembers can show is going to their ward. This makes it extremely interesting for them. In order to make this work out, Ward 6 has to get Shaw, which makes it more of a swap - and that's not at all what we should be looking for at this point. According to Greater Greater Washington's redistricting game (), Ward 2 is too large and Wards 7 and 8 are too small.??But since Ward 6 is in the center?of it all, most proposals to re-district affect our borders.? Unless Ward 8 takes over the Mall and Foggy Bottom, then we're all good.

Please take 15 minutes to call Jack Evans, Michael Brown, Phil Mendelson to oppose breaking up Ward 6 so that Eliot-Hine and Eastern HS would be located in Ward 7.
The date is not scheduled, but our ANC rep. Nick Alberti, told me that
Evans, Brown and Medelson -- who head up the redistricting committee -- will probably take this up in early June. But we don't have that long since the discussions are going on now - Jack Evan's receptionist just told me that his staffer Kevin Stogner is going to a meeting to discuss this tonight.
Tommy Wells does not want the Council to break up Ward 6 for the reasons I outline below, but also because our Ward works really well together. I didn't think this would affect me until I learned about the Eliot-Hine and Eastern redistricting. Now I am really concerned!! Nick also explained that they are working on several projects that will affect us if our Ward is broken up - like traffic patterns, etc.

Dear Councilman Evans:
As a D.C. resident of Ward 6 and parent of two children at Maury Elementary School, I am extremely concerned about rumors I have heard that the D.C. City Council is considering splitting up Ward 6 -- so that Eliot-Hine Middle School and Eastern High School would no longer inhabit Ward 6, but become part of Ward 7.
The D.C. City Council should keep the close, successful community that is Ward 6 intact and look to other less drastic solutions to realign the city's ward structure.
Splitting up Ward 6 would create a serious disconnect between the Ward 6 elementary schools, Eliot Hine Middle School and Eastern High School for which they are currently inbounds.
This proposal would remove the jurisdiction our Ward 6 council member, Tommy Wells, would have over the middle and high schools which he has championed and promised to become the jewel of Washington, D.C.
Why would the council member for Ward 7 care about the needs or concerns for citizens from a different ward -- who do not vote for him or her? There would be no pressure for him or her to act in a timely or appropriate fashion, or to push for any needed changes or accountability.
I voted for Tommy Wells because of his record for supporting our D.C. public schools. Tommy Wells will not be able to deliver on his promise to improve our schools and continue the progress we have seen to date, if he can no longer hold the key middle and high schools -- to which his Ward 6 constituents are inbounds -- accountable.
We are hoping to send our children to Eliot-Hine and Eastern if we determine they will offer our children an excellent education. We do not want to be forced to move to the Washington suburbs in search of better schools -- we expect to find them here in Ward 6 -- where a contiguous system would offer accountability, high expectations and superior academic standards. We don't have the time for our children to be the subjects of a failed DCPS attempt -- due to a lack of proper accountability and continuity.
This proposed redistricting would not only drive a wedge in the middle of the community we have created -- and kill the promise our public school system sees in Ward 6. It would undermine the democratic representation we deserve and expect.
Thank you for hearing my concerns. I look forward to hearing that this proposed redistricting in Ward 6 is just a rumor -- not at all fact.

Please take 15 minutes to call Jack Evans, Michael Brown, Phil Mendelson to oppose breaking up Ward 6 so that Eliot-Hine and Eastern HS would be located in Ward 7.
The date is not scheduled, but our ANC rep. Nick Alberti, told me that
Evans, Brown and Medelson -- who head up the redistricting committee -- will probably take this up in early June. But we don't have that long since the discussions are going on now - Jack Evan's receptionist just told me that his staffer Kevin Stogner is going to a meeting to discuss this tonight.
Tommy Wells does not want the Council to break up Ward 6 for the reasons I outline below, but also because our Ward works really well together. I didn't think this would affect me until I learned about the Eliot-Hine and Eastern redistricting. Now I am really concerned!! Nick also explained that they are working on several projects that will affect us if our Ward is broken up - like traffic patterns, etc.

Dear Councilman Evans:
As a D.C. resident of Ward 6 and parent of two children at Maury Elementary School, I am extremely concerned about rumors I have heard that the D.C. City Council is considering splitting up Ward 6 -- so that Eliot-Hine Middle School and Eastern High School would no longer inhabit Ward 6, but become part of Ward 7.
The D.C. City Council should keep the close, successful community that is Ward 6 intact and look to other less drastic solutions to realign the city's ward structure.
Splitting up Ward 6 would create a serious disconnect between the Ward 6 elementary schools, Eliot Hine Middle School and Eastern High School for which they are currently inbounds.
This proposal would remove the jurisdiction our Ward 6 council member, Tommy Wells, would have over the middle and high schools which he has championed and promised to become the jewel of Washington, D.C.
Why would the council member for Ward 7 care about the needs or concerns for citizens from a different ward -- who do not vote for him or her? There would be no pressure for him or her to act in a timely or appropriate fashion, or to push for any needed changes or accountability.
I voted for Tommy Wells because of his record for supporting our D.C. public schools. Tommy Wells will not be able to deliver on his promise to improve our schools and continue the progress we have seen to date, if he can no longer hold the key middle and high schools -- to which his Ward 6 constituents are inbounds -- accountable.
We are hoping to send our children to Eliot-Hine and Eastern if we determine they will offer our children an excellent education. We do not want to be forced to move to the Washington suburbs in search of better schools -- we expect to find them here in Ward 6 -- where a contiguous system would offer accountability, high expectations and superior academic standards. We don't have the time for our children to be the subjects of a failed DCPS attempt -- due to a lack of proper accountability and continuity.
This proposed redistricting would not only drive a wedge in the middle of the community we have created -- and kill the promise our public school system sees in Ward 6. It would undermine the democratic representation we deserve and expect.
Thank you for hearing my concerns. I look forward to hearing that this proposed redistricting in Ward 6 is just a rumor -- not at all fact.

Just wanted to bring you in on some info sharing that another neighborhood group is passing around. Apparently there was also a carjacking on C St. Be careful out there!

To keep everyone aware:? there was a home invasion at a friend of mine's house on Saturday night, on C St. between 12th and 13th.?? Someone jumped her?high fence by stacking trash cans.?? He then apparently used a key that was, unfortunately, left outside under a paint can, without the homeowner's knowledge, by a very careless contractor.??
Just another reminder to be vigilant.? Also, if you see anything, to just call 911 - particularly people in alleys, poking around,?that are not your neighbors.? I think it's great that we're doing the block party this weekend, as it will help us get to know faces.
(Also, I will note that when I"ve lived elsewhere, they've sort of frowned upon calling 911 for suspicious activity... but in DC, that's exactly what they ask you to do if you see something.? Everything goes through the 911 system, they don't want you to call local officers or anything.? I know it *feels* overzealous to me to call 911, but I'm trying to reprogram my brain to just do it if I see something, given what's been going on.)

Thank you for this (grim) information and keeping us posted.
I must have missed this by only minutes as I was out and about around that same time--one of the things we noticed is how few houses in the area (including almost all of Gessford Court) did not have their outside house lights on. ?I know it won't solve all problems but I think we all need to light up our homes and sidewalks as best as we can.

Last night I was walking the dog on 12th and there was a report of a mugging in our area. There was alot going on and I was just walking by but it was one person who mugged a female woman around 8:30 last night. The after action reports with the police were being taken by Mott's market so I would imagine the incident took place somewhere in that area. I don't have anymore detail other than this.
Rachel, I gave the police your information because I saw this e-mail yesterday and thouhgt it might be helpful to them. The two crimes might not be correlated but it might help if they knew your bike was stolen.

Just wanted to remind folks that this is the time of year thefts tend to pick up in our neighborhood. Kids are outside more and seem to love Gessford Ct. because it's an easy target. Lock anything you keep in your back yard and communicate with neighbors about packages left at your front door. These tend to get picked off, too. Sometimes I bring in Gessford Ct. neighbor's packages if I see them left during the day, then deliver them in the evening.
Last night while I was home making dinner, I answered a knock at my front door. In the 15 seconds I talked to the kid at the door, another came in through my back gate and stole my bike. I didn't even realize this until Pavol came home on his bike a half hour later. This time it was my fault - I left the gate AND bike unlocked. I figured since I was making dinner and the kitchen faces the back patio, I'd notice if anyone wandered in. Unfortunately we've had other bikes stolen by kids who climbed over our locked fence, too.

Join us for the Dance Craze
Hi Friends,
Taffety Punk is about to launch our three week celebration of one of theatre's purest elements. We're calling it the Dance Craze. For the next three weekends we will feature a set of of new works by eight choreographers. We took special care to put younger, up and coming choreographers on the same bill with the more experienced. Think of it as supporting bands opening for the headliner.
This will be Paulina's last show with us before she runs off to get that pesky PhD. I hope you can make it tomorrow night to give her a big Taffety Punk "WE LOVE YOU" as she presents the world premiere of "From Your Representatives, with Love" -- which she's also dancing in! This new work explores the miraculous idea of congressional employees releasing their artistic souls. It features a live score by Josh Taylor who will mix real world sounds into his composition.
I know this is a busy time for everyone. And tomorrow night is short notice, but we'd love to see you there. But I just wanted to get the word out!
