How you fill your days during retirement 2
I wonder a LOT how it can be that I¡¯m always behind (I won¡¯t confess when I last backed up my laptop) now that I¡¯m retired and supposedly free of demands on my time. But, two examples (only one Apple-related) My 78th B-day is this weekend. If I can still stand up on my skis in 2 years, my annual pass for the gorgeous local Nordic Ski center, another 1500 feet up and 15 miles away from Bozeman will drop from $250/yr to $15/year (so far, it¡¯s just about the ONLY thing optimistic I can look forward to). Just 5 minutes ago, I discovered that whoever pixelled or stole the ¡°Chipmunk¡± emoji for Apple needs to get outside more. His creation is either a mythical beast or a mutant. Connectology in home entertainment 2
This may not be the appropriate place to ask for help on this topic, but it involves Apple hardware (a 4K Apple TV). There¡¯s an ¡°enhanced¡± version of ARC HDMI (labeled eARC, for "enhanced audio return channel¡±) which is supposed to automate interoperability among remote controls for your TV, Sound Bar, DVD player, set-top box, and streaming box (like the Apple TV). For me, it appears the Apple TV is the ¡°villain¡± which screws up everything else. So, I¡¯m wondering if anyone here has fallen victim to such issues, and if so, what they¡¯ve tried and how well it helped). Corollary question (just about the Apple TV, and of course I know I can experiment, but it¡¯s a JUNGLE back there behind the wall-mounted 4K OLED). One suggestion is that I probably don¡¯t NEED the HDMI cable that connects my Apple TV to my LG 4K OLED TV, because they¡¯re also connected by Ethernet. And one suggestion regarding how to make all these boxes synchronize correctly has been to power off everything, then REMOVE everything from a/c power for a few minutes, then reconnect everything and permit the boxes to greet each other again. Sounds like witchcraft to me, but my spouse refuses to juggle remotes for video input source, sound output destination, and power on/off commands. -- Jim Robertson

questions about the Apple refurbish shop 2
Hello, I don't know if this is the place to ask about how Apple's Refurbished Store, please delete if inappropriate. My wonderings have do with how soon the latest releases of Apple products appear in the Refurbished Store and how much they are discounted. Other than Iphones, I am not familiar with how the other Apple products are marketed. An example is the October 2024 of the M4 Macbook Pro. In early February my newsfeed delivered an article mentioning these laptops were being added to the Refurbished Store. Out of curiosity I went to the store to find which models were being offered, discounts ranged from $700.00-$830.00. Is that common these days? Seems to me discounts used to be in the $200.00 range. Maybe part of my mind is stuck in another decade. Best wishes, Hec

Access to an external HD 21
I have a WD Elements SE HD which has failed. The way it has failed leads me to suspect that it's the electronics (USB interface?) rather than the platter / mechanism which has failed. Inside the case there appears to be a set of six contacts next to the USB socket. Might these give some sort of low level access to the drive? I know there are interfaces for SATA drives, does anyone know whether similar devices are available for WD drives? Keith

Faxing 3
Can anyone (Randy?) recommend a fax-by-email service that is free or pay-as-you-go, rather than a subscription. I have gone months or years without needing the service, then just a few pages. Incoming is received as a PDF attachment to an email (the service provides a ¡°fax number¡± for the sender. I realize that we are steadily moving away from faxes toward simply emailing documents, but older businesses and governments sometimes like to fax. There seem to be a lot of options in the App Store. -- Jim Saklad jimdoc@...

Duplicate file finder 7
Hi everyone, Can someone please point me in the direction of a software utility that can compare files over multiple drives so they can be consolidated onto one computer? I don¡¯t mind paying for it. The back story is I have eight drives from various computers I¡¯ve had over the years. I have an old iMac that has a hybrid drive. One of the drives failed years ago and I attempted to rescue it with Stellar before taking it to Apple for repair. All it did was capture my folder structure with all the files listed, but the majority of the newer files were corrupted. It is a daunting process to get the files back. I have recently purchased a new iMac with the intentions of getting all the old files on there. Photos, videos, documents, the usual stuff. The drives that I used for back-up have also failed, so once I get this all sorted out, I plan to get a back-up redundancy plan going. For now it will be a lot of digging, and to do it manually feels overwhelming. I¡¯m using a Zilke device for reading the old drives and that seems to be doing a decent job, but many of the files with the newest dates are corrupted and cant be opened. Thanks in advance. I know this is a total mess of a situation and I expect it to take a long time to recover. Steve

Charging anomalie after 15.3 update 12
I'd appreciate feedback, please, whether this is something peculiar to my machine or more widely known / experienced. Any further hints and tips would be a bonus! I am using a MacBook Pro 15-Inch "Core i9" 2.3 Touch 2019 2.3 GHz. Since updating to 15.3 from 15.2 it has been reporting its battery charge erratically. Yesterday I saw it was at 1% so I immediately put it on charge, whereupon the charge was displayed as 51%. Something similar happened today and I recorded the battery charge - please see the attached screenshot. After 09:17 the machine was not connected to the charger, but the charge (apparently) went from ~70% to ~25% in next to no time, then back up to 45%, then down to ~15% and then up again to ~25%. It seems to me probable that it is the very low readings which are erroneous as the green lines in the screenshot show the sort of linear decline one might reasonably expect. The battery health is reported as "normal". Keith

A little iOS voicemail help, please? 3
I¡¯m a messy housekeeper. Yesterday a message popped up telling me my voicemail box was almost full. So, I began erasing them (and there are LOTS)! But in the process I discovered that I¡¯m not really ERASING them, just relegating them to Limbo in the category of ¡°Deleted Messages.¡± Up in the right corner of my screen in that category there¡¯s a ¡°Clear All¡± button, but I have no clue whether pressing that would empty just the deleted messages or erase ALL my stored voicemail! I¡¯m on iOS 18.3.1. Does anyone know which is the case? I also discovered that there¡¯s another repository, of ¡°Blocked Messages,¡± the very purpose of which eludes me. I discovered that yes, those messages really ARE there, creating a scenario where I¡¯ve ¡°told¡± my phone not to take calls from those numbers, but the callers probably think I was just temporarily unavailable and likely will get back to them. Am I missing some useful bit of social engineering there? Thanks so much, Jim Robertson

suspicious stuff on iphone 14
jim robertson¡¯s recent post about whether to open a suspicious pdf file in imessages prompted me to share a recent oddity on one of our two household iphones, a his and a hers, both iphone13 pro max ¡ after logging on, at some point her phone suddenly displayed a multi-page message purportedly from apple describing numerous changes to terms of service with regard to updates¡at bottom there were two buttons to push ¡ª ¡°agree¡± or ¡°disagree¡± ¡ she did nothing ¡ this was neither an email nor a text and there was no way out it of it except to turn off the phone, which she did¡ upon logging on again after a few minutes, the message did not reappear and everything was normal ¡ later, when we logged on to him¡¯s phone, the message did not appear¡ unless i¡¯m missing something, this message clearly was malicious and certainly not from apple ¡ i regret not taking screenshots of the message so i could show it here! ¡ has anyone else gotten this strange/suspicious message on their iphone? or even heard of it from other users?

Using Font Book on iMac 4
Hi! My fonts have always transferred from one Mac to another without problem. Previously, I was running 2017 27¡± iMac and Font Book worked flawlessly. Last year we purchased 2023 24¡± iMac. It is running 15.3. If I use Pages App and free type (or use the text box), the fonts correctly appear on the document. But when I open Font Book to change certain appearances of a specific letter in the document, an undesired character is pasted. I open font book to the correct font. From the selected font, I choose a specialty character. But another character appears when I PASTE, rather than the character I selected. At first I assumed Font Book had become corrupted. But the fonts that come with the Mac are ok, as are some of the purchased fonts. I especially have trouble with the Samantha Font purchased in 2016 from Mighty Deals. It worked flawlessly in the 2017 iMac. The font is OTF v. 2. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. Donna Ellis

A question for classical music lovers 22
Apologies for the length of this message; I hope I¡¯ll get some forgiveness because much of it sets the stage for why it¡¯s so important to me. If someone were to ask me what piece of music and what performance I¡¯d choose if time travel permitted it, it would be Leonard Bernstein¡¯s performance of the Mahler 2nd Symphony at Ely Cathedral in England in 1973, conducting the London Symphony Orchestra and the Edinburgh Festival Chorus. Many of you may have watched Bradley Cooper¡¯s attempt to channel that monument in Maestro, the movie. I¡¯ve just discovered that Deutsche Grammophone released a recording of it in 1974, but they also have an audio-video version available on their subscription website, <stage-plus.com>. Unfortunately, permanent access to the recording is not offered. Here¡¯s the link: Watch: Bernstein conducts Mahler: Symphony No. 2 (1974) stage-plus.com While the technical ¡°quality¡± of both the audio and video betray the era of their creation, the emotion by Bernstein, the vocal soloists, and members of the chorus are priceless and timeless. My question: is there a way to capture this to my own Apple devices (preferably my Mac) that¡¯s both possible and legal, so long as I don¡¯t distribute it to others? Failing that, is it possible to do so without getting arrested if I don¡¯t distribute it? Extra Credit (no Googling allowed): why is the name ¡°Gilbert Kaplan¡± so relevant to this issue? And, a movie recommendation: the Oscar-nominated Netflix Documentary The Only Girl in the Orchestra (probably the main reason I¡¯ll watch the Oscars this year). -- Jim Robertson

Apple support do not ¡®hear¡¯ when I press number 1. 2
It seems I am not alone in this. A search for the answer shows many people have been asking, for a long time, all over Apple community. One schedules a support call, when Apple calls they ask you to press 1 to show you are ready. They never ¡®hear¡¯ this response however many times it is done. Eventually they go away¡¡ I have tried with Bluetooth on or off, by waiting till the Apple response finishes and then pressing 1. Nothing seems to work. Does anyone have an answer that works? Charles.
