Wall mounting bracket for M4 Mac mini?
I'm giving serious thought to getting an M4 Mac mini in the near future. My current 2012 Mac mini is mounted to one of the vertical members of my loft bed with a bracket, as in the attached photo. At this point I don't even remember where I got the bracket. Some online research tells me that there are brackets like this for the M4 Mac mini. If you're using a bracket like this, what company made it, and how do you like it? Thanks.

Sequoia Time Machine issues.
3
Hi, Several of my clients have had problems with Time Machine after the update. It goes approximately 85-95 % then fails with error messages I found this resolution, and it appears to resolve it: Yes - the problem is very much related to Time Machine losing permissions to certain files when the machine sleeps. I've worked around this (until it's fixed) by making the following changes to power management: sudo pmset -b hibernatemode 0 sudo pmset -b standby 0 sudo pmset -b disksleep 1 What this does is prevent the machine from fully hibernating. This will affect battery life a little if it's a laptop you regularly take about the place, but in general terms this is how MacOS -used- to operate. If you aren¡¯t experiencing the issue of Time Machine failing, feel free to ignore, but if you are, these Terminal commands have resolved it for three of my clients. Hope it helps. problems with yesterday's update
4
I am pulling out my hair ,and have been working for hours to fix some of the problems caused by the latest up date to Sequoia , First of all my desktop became cluttered with all kinds of files that were very old and never had been on my new computer. I lost my upper tool bars. I am unable to get into my computer after it wakes from sleep without putting in my password..and yes I have followed the directions from Apple as to how to circumvent using a password when the computer is waking from sleep. I guess that I am now going to be stuck doing something I have not had to do ever before..and yes I have rebooted several times, But I have never had so many problems with any upgrade on any of my Macs before. Just think up until yesterday, my only gripe was not be able to use a keyboard short cut to put my new Imac to sleep. anyone else having any problems after doing the upgrade? Jeannie

New Macs On Sale!
Wanted to give any United States-based members...interested in a new Apple computer...a head's up on some great Apple Computer deals at Costco. (You can purchase online.) Looks like pretty much everything is well below Apple Store prices. Costco's everyday price on Apple computers is typically lower than the Apple Store (almost always a little bit below Apple MSRP). But this sale is even better. For example...they are offering the newly released base model M4 Mac-Mini (16GB RAM, 256GB storage)...for just $499 + tax. https://www.costco.com/mac-mini-desktop-computer---apple-m4-chip%2c-built-for-apple-intelligence%2c-10-core-cpu%2c-10-core-gpu%2c-16gb-memory%2c-256gb-ssd-storage.product.4000225148.html Current Apple Store price is $599...Costco everyday price is/was $579. But now thru 12/2/24...base model M4 Mac-Mini's are $499. Other Apple Computers on sale: * Base model M2 Mac Studio = $1799 * Base model M2 MacBook Air = $749 * Base model M3 14" MacBook Pro = $1149 * Base model M4 Mac-Mini = $499 Other models are also on sale. Prices good thru 12/2/24. Even if you aren't a Costco member...and you need to purchase a membership ($65)...you will still end up with a lower overall price than purchasing directly from the Apple Store. Even better...if you know someone that's a Costco member...go with them & purchase.:) Also Costco has a 90 day no questions asked return policy on computers. Apple standard return policy is ONLY 14 days. Lastly...if all of this wasn't enough. Costco doubles the manufacture's warranty on computers (and other electronics). Thus a 1 year warranty...is extended to 2 years. I believe 1st year is the Apple warranty...2nd year warranty is thru Costco itself. https://www.costco.com/computers.html __________________________________________________ Randy B. A little too little knowledge can be dangerous (SMS scam barely avoided)
11
My most expensive hobby is no longer keeping up to date with Apple ecosystem hardware. It¡¯s become expanding and updating my Scottish Highlands wardrobe (even more expensive, and when you order something it doesn¡¯t show up on your door step 24 hours (or even 24 days) later. For ¡°bespoke¡± garments (made from measurements from fabric woven in Scotland), the waiting times are often 6-12 WEEKS, and sometimes MONTHS. Yesterday I received an SMS allegedly from the USPS regarding an item supposedly being held at US customs because of an ambiguous Zip code. The message use of commas and punctuation was a bit odd, but I didn¡¯t really get suspicious until it asked me to reply and fill in a ¡°confirming¡± form that asked for a credit care number. What fooled me, at first was the URL to which I was supposed to reply: <https://usps.com-trackcpa.top/I>, AND the fact that I was eagerly awaiting a shipment from Edinburgh, supposedly arriving today, being delivered by DHL. I don¡¯t often get packages from DHL, but I don¡¯t remember them using the USPS for ¡°last mile¡± delivery At first I wondered whether the postal service¡¯s domains included a dot-com rather than dot-gov extension, but my ¡°Informed Delivery¡± daily emails come from a usps.com address. What I didn¡¯t know was whether usps.com-trackcpa could actually be a totally different domain address. Fortunately, my suscpicions were raised enough to do a quick web search, where I learned that these attacks are rampant. Now, -- Jim Robertson

small problem with new computer
31
My new Imac with the M4 chip arrived Monday, and I have a small annoying problem. I have always used the shortcut option command eject to put my mac to sleep. According to everything I have seen on line, it is still the same, But when I try to use it, I get an empty desktop back and it is asking me for my password. When I put it in, the complete desktop reappears, But It has not gone to sleep . I can make it go to sleep by going to the apple menu and clicking on sleep..But I sure would like my old shortcut back! Thanks, Jeannie

Mac Pages

I¡¯ve made a Pages doc and need to save it as a pdf and also as a Word doc. I¡¯ve done this before but for reason, it doesn¡¯t seem to be working. I opened the doc, went to File and then to Export. Then I chose pdf. When I searched for the doc as a pdf, nothing appeared. Same for when I saved it to Word. What am I doing wrong?

Getting rid of Junk in Mai
8
Now you¡¯ve made me curious. I didn¡¯t start using Macs until 2008. On my 2008 Mac Pro and 2010 MacBook Pro keyboards, the key¡¯s main label was option, but it in included a smaller alt on the upper left of the key. There is no mention anywhere about alt on my 2019 MacBook Pro (Intel) keyboard. So I wondered whether any keyboard shortcuts lists mentioned anything about alt. * My search found the following 2007 document, which doesn¡¯t mention alt. http://macfortheblind.com/documents/key_commands_Mac_OS_Leopard.pdf * After feeling a bit lost at sea when switching from MS Windows when I got my first Mac, I purchased O¡¯Reilly¡¯s ¡°Mac OS X: Missing Manual Leopard¡±. They had a free download from an appendix in that book, ¡°The Master Mac OS X Secret Keystroke List: Appendix E - Mac OSX: Missing Manual Leopard¡±. That appendix has no reference to alt. With that said, I dug around this morning and I was able to download a sample of that book from Apple Books. It says the following about that key, ¡°The Option key (labeled Alt on keyboards in some countries) is sort of a "miscellaneous" key.¡± (The bolding was added by me.) * In 2009, macmost.com had a similar shortcut list, ¡°Snow Leopard Power User Keyboard Shortcuts¡±. It also doesn¡¯t mention alt. * The next keyboard shortcut list that I found was from a MacRumors 2011 guide. It too didn¡¯t refer to the key as alt. * Every other list that I have is much more recent. Apple¡¯s current keyboard shortcut article mentions, ¡°Option (or Alt) ?¡±, but it also mentions ¡°Control (or Ctrl) ?¡±. It then goes on to say, ¡°On keyboards made for Windows PCs, use the Alt key instead of Option, and the Ctrl key or Windows logo key instead of Command.¡± https://support.apple.com/en-us/102650 In macOS Sonoma, there is no mention of alt in: Apple > Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts I don¡¯t remember whether that was the case for preferences in earlier OS versions. So all of this has left me wondering what keyboard shortcut lists look like in countries that had the option key labeled as alt. Also, did their System Preferences show alt or option in their keyboard shortcuts? -- Bev in TX

Can a 2017 21.5" iMac be repurposed as a monitor for an Apple Silicon Mac Mini?
12
I¡¯ve managed to keep my Intel iMac running by giving it a memory transplant and exorcising its ¡°Fusion Drive,¡± repurposing the internal rotating platter drive to house one of my Time Machine backups. But now there are new, smaller footprint Mac Minis, and I¡¯m wondering if I can repurpose the iMac screen to be a monitor for the Mini. I also have another monitor that has multiple inputs, and I currently use both with the iMac. However, the iMac itself, of course, cannot run the current macOS, so I¡¯m hoping I could extend its life a bit just acting as a screen. -- Jim Robertson

MacBook Pro M4 Max Review at PetaPixel
I read a few photography sites and this just appeared on one of them <https://petapixel.com/2024/11/07/apple-macbook-pro-with-m4-max-review-another-performance-leap/> Being a photography site, the emphasis might be different to the usual "computer" ones, so I thought it might be of interest here. Calendar can¡¯t count 4 weeks
16
I¡¯ve been trying to create a calendar event that repeats every 4 weeks. And when I check on the event it does say repeat every 4 weeks. But when I check the calendar in future months it is listed sometimes after 3 weeks and sometimes 5 weeks. Anyone else had this problem and a suggestion about how to fix it? Regards, Joan

1Password question
I may be struggling with syntax, but whenever I update the ¡°1Password for Safari¡± extension in the macOS App Store app, I¡¯m asked to open Safari Settings, click on the 1Password Extension, then click on something called the ¡°Page Settings Button¡± in the address bar (which I assume is the item containing the URL entry box), but I don¡¯t ever see an interface element called the ¡°Page Settings Button.¡± The purpose of doing this is to enable Safari to use the 1Password Extension on every website to which I navigate. The closest analog to that I can find in the settings for the 1PW extension is a checkbox that enables me to activate or de-activate Safari from working in Private Browsing. What am I missing here? (I¡¯m running macOS Sonoma on an M3 MacBook Pro, and the latest version of macOS 1Password 8. -- Jim Robertson

iPadOS 18 Issues
Well, I bit the bullet and upgraded my iPad to iPadOS 18.1, and iPhone to iOS 18.1. I¡¯ve had no issues whatsoever on my iPhone, but I encountered a couple problems on my iPad. I thought that the Clock app¡¯s alarms had stopped playing. However, after some investigation, I discovered that somehow during the upgrade the volume got set to almost nothing in: Settings > Sounds > Ringtone and Alerts I encountered the following error with one of my accounts in Mail: Cannot Get Mail The connection to the server failed. Server message "UID FETCH Server error - Please try again later". Trying again later didn¡¯t help. Some online articles and discussions mentioned deleting the account and adding it back again. I did that, and after downloading all the messages again, everything appeared to be working okay again. That is until this morning, when the error started happening again ?. i don¡¯t want to continually have to delete the account and read it. I tried changing the following account setting: Settings > Apps > Mail > Accounts > Under Fetch I changed Manual to Automatic The problem still persists, but now eventually the messages download to my inbox. I reported the latter error to Apple Feedback. https://www.apple.com/feedback/ -- Bev in TX

replacement for Automator
11
I have used automator for years to set up a little app that closes all programs. I am waiting for my new Imac to arrive in a week or more. I have read that automator will no longer be supported, and we should be using shortcuts. I have looked through shortcuts and can find nothing that closes all apps at once. Is there any way in shortcuts to do this? Thanks, Jeannie

macOS Maps Satellite View Oddity
I¡¯m on an M3 MacBook Pro, still running Sonoma. In Apple Maps, the street names don¡¯t track with the map view if I enlarge or shrink the magnification, or if I move the area viewed on screen by dragging it with the cursor. If I¡¯m in ¡°Driving¡± view, the street labels track correctly with the map. Is anyone else seeing this behavior? -- Jim Robertson

iPad onboard key pad hitch
13
I think it is since update to 16 the onboard keyboard on my ipad does not allow the email or iMessage to scroll down as I type, so you cannot see what you are typing. It is the same whether I am in portrait or landscape view. I have done the 17 update but it is still the same. I have searched online but cannot find a remedy. I have tried using the return button to scroll down but it can only go as far as the keyboard. Can somebody help please, it is a nuisance. I have a bluetooth keyboard which I can use, but it is not always convenient to have to carry it around. Thank you Cynthia

How do you get Firefox to ask you where to save a document?
2
There's a check box for that, and I've checked it, but I can't get it to take "Downloads" out of the main box, although I can change it. In previous versions of Firefox I could choose. Sonoma on M3 MBP. Thanks, Barbara
