iPad onboard key pad hitch

I think it is since update to 16 the onboard keyboard on my ipad does not allow the email or iMessage to scroll down as I type, so you cannot see what you are typing. It is the same whether I am in portrait or landscape view. I have done the 17 update but it is still the same. I have searched online but cannot find a remedy. I have tried using the return button to scroll down but it can only go as far as the keyboard.

?

Can somebody help please, it is a nuisance. I have a bluetooth keyboard which I can use, but it is not always convenient to have to carry it around.

?

Thank you Cynthia

I infrequently have a similar problem with a Quick Note. ?I don’t know whether it has anything whatsoever to do with your issue. ?I temporarily get around the problem by hiding the keyboard, manual scrolling to the part I’m editing, and then reopening the onscreen keyboard. ?In my case is restores scrolling.

A workaround for you might be to switch to a floating keyboard in when editing messages, which I have had to do in a few circumstances. ?

More thoughts on the matter:

Have you applied all OS updates? ?Is your iPad at the latest version of iPadOS 17? ?Can you upgrade to iPadOS 18? ?If you can upgrade to iPadOS 18 and the problem persists, then you could try contacting Apple Support.

If you can’t find any other solution, then try doing a forced restart. ?Exit all apps before doing it to prevent data loss.

If you can’t resolve the issue, report it to Apple:

Bev, thank you very much, I did the floating keyboard fix and it seems to be alright now.
I had already done the latest update etc. ?I had also messaged at the Apple users help forum but had not replies.
Thank you so much for reaching out to me. ? Cynthia in Uk

I have had that issue on my iPhone for so long that I don’t remember when it started. I guess we need to send in feedback.?

I’m glad that works for you ?. ?I still recommend giving feedback to Apple about it, because you shouldn’t have to switch to the floating keyboard.

Have you tried hiding the onscreen keyboard (drag down from above the keyboard), manually scrolling, and then tapping in the spot where you want to resume editing (brings the keyboard back on screen)?

I do something similar when editing Quick Notes on my iPad. ?I’m curious as to whether that also helps in your situation?

The more people who report this issue, the greater the chance of Apple fixing it.

Just a reminder that when you post in multiple forums, an answer might be posted in only one of them. If you haven’t already done so, it’s best to personally post a reply to yourself in those other forums with the answer.

Bev, I just did the drag the keyboard away, tapping when ready to type and it does pop back. ?However the keyboard is behaving at present so cannot test if it would work with the problem I had.

I only posted on the iPad Apple forum and no one replied. ?I wonder if it is not a common problem which was why I had no replies not could find a solution using Google.
I am grateful to you for the help you gave which worked. ?Thank you.

It’s difficult to say how many folks have encountered this problem. Silence can mean that folks just don’t have an answer. At one point I also didn’t know of any workarounds.

Brent has the identical problem on his iPhone. I have had the same problem, but in several other apps. We are a couple of the more vocal group members. I suspect, but have no proof, that it’s more common than one might think. But it’s good to post that update in the other forum even if only one person might find it useful sometime in the future.

Just say that you found a workaround of using a floating keyboard — just one short sentence. You don’t have to go into all the whys and wherefores.

Cynthia, Bev is correct, others may also have the problem, but not have a solution, so they stay quiet.

And there are regular contributors, like Bev and myself.

I responded, with no fix or workaround, to acknowledge that you are not the only one with the issue.

That a search engine came back with nothing, could be that the search phrase didn’t find a match.

I, myself, find scrolling down on a phone with no external keyboard, an easy fix, now that I think of it as a fix. I have yet to look into floating keyboard, as that is not in my normal workflow. On a tiny screen it makes no sense.

True. ?The floating keyboard is only available on iPads.??As far as I know, the only iPhone onscreen keyboard movement is for the keyboard ?to shift a little to one side for one handed typing.??But it doesn’t make it vertically smaller.??You could test it, to see whether it makes any difference to the not scrolling problem, but it doesn’t seem likely.??But anything is possible :-).

For those unfamiliar with it, see “Type with one hand” at:

You can choose your iOS version at the top.

If you don’t see the one handed keyboard options, then you may have the following setting turned on:

Settings >

Display & Brightness >

Display Zoom >?

Larger text

Turn that off and then try using a one handed keyboard option.
