Mail keeps shutting down

My mail app keeps suddenly shutting down. Unfortunately I didn’t take a screen shot of the error message. But I am wondering is there some way to reset mail (reset might not be the correct term)?

Joan

HI

A reinstall of the latest update for your version of the operating system replaces the application files - in case there is corruption there.

Have you tried a Safe Boot to see if Mali crashes while in Safe Mode? Perhaps it is a third party component creating the issue,

I’m on High Sierra 10.13.6, and recently I’ve been noticing it too. On Feb 5 I ran security update 2020-001. I don’t know if it started then or not, I think a good deal later.
It often happens when I send a message, but it is after it is sent, as it does exist in the sent folder. Since the message is sent it is no big deal.
One thing I have seen, though, is when I click on the restart button it does not. I have to relaunch Mail from the dock.

Whenever I've seen this, it's been due to a malformed/malicious/spammy e-mail message that Mail has encountered on your ISP's server.

The way to deal with that is to log into your ISP's mail server using the Web-based interface most ISP's provide and to delete the problematic e-mail manually. The problematic one is usually easy to spot. It's usually either spammy or unreadable. If your ISP doesn't offer a Web interface, you can use:

MyPOPBarrier (free)

Another option is to hit Command+i in Mail, which will bring up a window "Account Info" allowing deletions of messages from your ISP's mail server.

Could you elaborate on that one, Randy. I’m on Mail 13.0 in Catalina. I’m using the 3-pane view, which I suspect most people do. When I type “Command-i”, nothing happens. When I open Mail help and review the listed shortcuts (or drop each menu in turn), I don’t see anything that corresponds to “Command-i.” Is that an interface element that’s available only under certain conditions?

Thanks so much,

Oops, I should have sent that one as a question, not a statement.

And, combing through the menus again, I do see <Command-Option-I>, but the item is non-selectable, and I cannot figure out how to change that.

Sorry, in Catalina it's a bit different:

I am still getting these shutdowns. I did go to Mailbox/Rebuild, and that didn’t help. I then went to mail connection doctor and saw the following:
Account name Account Type
iCloud SMTP
iCloud IMAP

I don’t know what either of those mean, but I am wondering why there are 2 accounts with the same name and different type. Is this significant or not?

Any further ideas?

Joan

Hi Joan.

Think of it this way:
Incoming Mail - IMAP
Sending Mail - SMTP

Imagine a building with two windows - you line up to receive your mail at the Incoming Mail Access Protocol window (port on a server)and then to send any messages you line up at the Sending Mail Transport Protocol. At each window you have to confirm its you - with a username and password.

So yes, each email address would have two accounts.

Does that help?

That should have nothing to do with the Mail crashes.

Did you try the suggestion that I made on the list earlier to see if there is a malicious/corrupted email on your ISP's server, and if so remove it?

Is there a possibility that IS the problem? I say this because I know that one of my ISPs changed its host configurations a few years ago so that the preferred outgoing mail server was no longer named “SMTP.” However, I think the result of this would just be an inability to send mail from that account, rather than the application crashing.
