Re: iPad Battery Life

Howdy.

Battery may need replacement.

Or, note that lithium Iron batteries sometimes lose the proper
calibration that is the real battery charge level and what is reported
on the charge/batter icon. This is usually fixed by letting the
battery run down so the iPad shuts itself down due to no battery
power. Then plug in and start it. Could help.

It's because you have excluded the LaCie from being used for backups.

Hi

If its in the exclude box it will not be backed up.

Try restarting the computer is Safe Mode -hold down the Shift key at reboot and continue holding until you get the login credentials are- and then see if you can remove the Macintosh HD from the exclude list.

Obviously I want my iMac hard drive backed up to the LaCie drive. This is my current situation. I used Disk Utility to erase and reformat the LaCie drive which I would like to use for my Time Machine backup (as well as for backing up my hard drive using Super Duper). Now when I open that Exclude these items from backups dialogue box, both the LaCie Drive and my Macintosh HD are listed (the latter grayed out) and if I press the minus sign beneath the window, it will allow me to exclude the LaCie drive (is that what I want if I am using that drive to backup to?) but not the Macintosh HD which is grayed out. What am I doing wrong?

My 2? here: Time Machine will write any file that is at all changed, leaving others alone. If you use something such as Parallels Desktop or VMWare Fusion, the “volumes” seen by the emulator look to MacOS as simply very large files, so any time you make a change within the emulator program Time Machine will see it as a changed file and so write the 30 or whatever gigabyte file to the backup. In other words, do exclude those?

And, be prepared to let Disk Utility run for a LONG time if you’ve been using the backup disks for a while, because a huge amount of what’s on Time Machine backup disks is links within the directory (Time Machine doesn’t copy entire files if they change).

At least that’s my (limited) understanding.

Re: Time Machine isn't working

Joan,

I occasionally have had this happen. Not sure why. Two solutions that I have tried that work but not consistently.

1.) Shut down all the components. Restart them - most often this solves the problem and they will start backing up.
2.) Run disk utility on the back-up devices.

Hope one of these methods help.

I keep getting a message that Time Machine was unable to do a backup. I have two backup disks, a LaCie backup disk directly connected to my iMac (27-inch late 2014 running Sierra, 10.12.6) and a backup disk connected to my AirPort Extreme router. When I click on the Time Machine preferences, there are little notifications besides my LaCie disk and my iMac Time machine disk that say “There are no disks to back up. This can happen if all available disks are in the “Do not back up “ list. Click Options to edit the list.”

I did click options and the LaCie disk and LACIE SHARE (I’m not sure what that is) are the only ones listed in “Exclude these items from backups”. My iMac is not listed. Furthermore when I try to add a disk I see iMac time machine (the one connected to my AirPort Extreme) and it won’t allow me to add it to the excluded list. I also see “Joan’s iMac.sparsebundle” as an “invisible item”. What on earth is going on and how can I get back to normal Time Machine backups?

  • iMac Pro.
  • Mac Pro introduced in 2019.
  • Mac mini introduced in 2018.
  • MacBook Air introduced in 2018 or later.
  • MacBook Pro introduced in 2018 or later.
The T2 is heavily involved with security and encryption.?

Other Macs have had a T1 chip.?

I’m attaching a link to an article on what the T2 does.?

<>?

After trying to deal with an Apple Tech Support case (for 4 very un responsive weeks) on boot problems with my new MacPro, this evening I took it to an Apple Store for them to diagnose the problems.?

It won’t boot into Recovery, Safe Disk, Option, zap PRAM, or boot from USB bootable installer. Otherwise it runs well.?

At Apple Store, I provided an hour of entertainment as every employee came around to check out the MacPro. None of them had ever seen one. ? Great interest. Hummmm? ?That may have been worth the price.?

I did learn about something called Secure Boot which is part of the T2 and is on by default. This prevents external bootable drives from booting the MacPro. However, apparently Secure Boot can be turned off when in Recovery mode.?

Except I can’t boot in Recovery.?

I suspect the T2 may have altered precisely how maintenance boots are done. ?No proof of this at this time. ?More info if I learn something about this.?

The T2 chip also deals with FileVault encryption and decryption almost instantly.?

I strongly urge folks with a T2 chip Mac to read the article.?

I’m sure more info will come out about the T2.?

That’s a good question! I have no idea. I was trying to download a whole bunch of podcasts at one time, which normally does not cause a problem. But this time, it hung up iTunes so badly that I could not force quit. I even went to activity monitor and closed out all of the iTunes processes but still had no luck force quitting iTunes. After trying numerous times, I finally went ahead and closed chrome. Then I tried iTunes again and lo and behold, it quit.

Thanks for checking, Dan. It probably was a glitch. It happened while I was trying to shut down my iMac and could not force quit iTunes for the life of me. I used my iPad to send the message so maybe something was going on with the connection at that time.

(Once I shut down chrome, iTunes then allowed me to force quit it and I was able to restart my computer)
