icloud hacking
开云体育
This morning I was doing sone research and a regular website I clicked on – not an adult one! – immediately gave me a warning
my system was infected! I immediately closed Safari, then reopened and checked preferences and extensions, with nothing odd showing up. I then ran DetectX and Malware bites, neither showed anything. I then started getting a warning top right that my icloud
account was being hacked, with a Trojan B... number listed, so I closed the machine down entirely and disconnected the wifi. After a few minutes I restarted, ran DetectX and Malware again both of which showed up clean. But I am still getting the icloud warning
occasionally. I am on a 2015 macbook pro, running 10.13.6 and am usually very careful how I use the internet. Any ideas what else I can look for or do to stop these notifications?

Re: Ryoko Pro. thoughts
Thanks everyone for your input.
I have decided against this as in retro thought my internet is only spotty when I am in rural areas
The added cost of this was also a decision
I appreciate all your knowledge and help.
I am a sucker for new gadgets and advertisements. (smile)

Re: Is SuperDuper still a good idea

The controversy is over whether you CAN make a BOOTABLE backup, and if if a bootable backup is even worth anything. People using CCC as still reporting that they are having problems making bootable backups. Folks using SD are having much more success. Instructions here: Part of the problem is that Apple Silicon Macs will ONLY BOOT FROM AN EXTERNAL THUNDERBOLT DRIVE (not a simple USB-C drive)! You also have to set the security of your Mac so that it allows you to boot from the external drive: A word about how useful a bootable drive is is you have an Apple Silicon Mac… Lots of folks are going around saying that a bootable clone backup is worthless because if an Apple Silicon Mac’s internal hard drive fails, it won’t startup at all, even from an external bootable clone. And that’s true, but it’s not the entire story. First, Apple has made the OS much more robust recently. So robust, that having an an internal SSD drive fail due to a corrupted directory just about never happens anymore. In fact, I, personally, have yet to hear of someone having their internal SSD fail in an Apple Silicon Mac! And I’m on half a dozen Mac discussion lists, comprising hundreds of thousands of Mac users. Second, when SSD’s fail from, basically, old age (i.e. they become over-full), they don’t completely die. They just become read-only. That means that you can still start up your Mac, and you can still effectively boot up from an external bootable drive! So while a bootable clone backup isn’t as useful as it once was, having one isn’t worthless either. In any case, the one thing that hasn’t changed at all, is that having a backup of your data is still invaluable. A clone backup is a very useful format for a backup, even if it isn’t bootable. You can re-create your data, right down to its organization, on a new Mac, or on your old Mac if it comes back with a new SSD, easily using your non-bootable clone. __________________________________________________ Randy B. Wall mounting bracket for M4 Mac mini?
开云体育I'm giving serious thought to getting an M4 Mac mini in the near future. My current 2012 Mac mini is mounted to one of the vertical members of my loft bed with a bracket, as in the attached photo. At this point I don't even remember where I got the bracket. Some online research tells me that there are brackets like this for the M4 Mac mini. If you're using a bracket like this, what company made it, and how do you like it? Thanks. |

Re: What does this mean?
开云体育I am capable of this kind of work. I bought a used late 2012 Mac mini. I bought 2 new larger sticks of RAM, and a 1 TB harddrive for $40. The drive was a “pulled” drive, supposedly from a new Mac. I got them all from OWC about last Xmas.?A similar upgrade for Louise would definitely be a good investment. Re: Ryoko Pro. thoughts
开云体育Christopher, it is amazing how many people think WiFi means a magical internet connection.?As you and I know, it is ?wireless connection between one device and another, and one maybe connected to the internet by another means, cable, satellite or cellular data. ? The Ryoko Pro uses a SIM, so cellular data. And then it allows several connections, so it is a router or private hotspot.? The Ryoko Pro is nice that it has a built in ad blocker to minimize the cellular data usage, which is expensive and doled out in small increments. 500 MB can be used up very quickly, and costs $20.? Jim S did a good review of its pros and cons.? I used to have a similar device without the ad blocker from AT&T. I believe it was called a Sierra. I got it because I was working in South Dakota in a rural area, an hours drive from my motel. If I wasn’t in the construction trailer, there was only cellular data if you happened to be in a good spot.? My sense is that BOTH of the two popular “bootable clone” backup utilities struggled for a time with the increased security and decreased hardware upgradability that came with the change to “Apple Silicon” processors. For me, the biggest loss was the new inability to BOOT the computer and run it from the backup if something happened to the default internal drive or SSD, and while it is now possible to boot an Apple Silicon computer running the current macOS version from a CCC or SuperDuper! clone, that’s only the case if the computer itself remains bootable from the default internal mechanism (one of the bulwarks of Apple’s very tight security posture). However, SuperDuper is quick and reliable in my opinion, and the support provided by the developer to individual users is incredible.

开云体育You have less than 2% available Storage space. Common wisdom says keep more than 20%, and things start to slowdown at closer to 50%Move stuff off the device or have a larger drive installed.? On my iPhone Xr On Nov 22, 2024, at 18:08, Louise Stewart via groups.io <veggie236.art@...> wrote:

I have been using SuperDuper! for MANY years (AT LEAST 2006) and am now using it regularly on an M1 Max Mac Studio with a 2TB SSD running Sequoia 15.2 beta. The SD! backup(s) (I alternate between 2) are on two 2TB hard drives that are, I think, about 8 years old. I also use two 4TB hard drives that are about 6 years old to make Time Machine backups in a more-or-less continuous fashion hourly, so the SD! backups are more like weekly at present. I have NO problems with this backup system – the latest macOS, the latest SD! version, and multi-year-old drives. --? Jim Saklad |

Re: What does this mean?
开云体育Intel chip from the looks of it.Which means you can upgrade both your memory & your storage. If you’re running that close to the limits, you might want to double or quadruple your storage (256GB or 512GB). The amount of work is the same, just the product is different. I’m guessing you’ve only got 8GB or RAM, so you might want to consider getting that upgraded while the shop have your system. 16GB or 32GB of RAM is always much more fun to place with. Not knowing how technological you are, I’d probably take it to a shop to get it done. cjc

Re: 2023 14" M3 MacBook Pro with partially freezing UI
开云体育I just ran the site on my M1 Pro, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD. Sequoia 15.1.1.I have three windows open in Safari. Opened a new tab @ kbzk.? Came up immediately at approximately 150MB in Activity Monitor. Went to the story about the $6.2 million banana taped to the wall. Activity Monitor said Memory Usage went up to about 225MB and stayed stable. I’ve got 1 window open in Orion (Safari codebase, but like Brave, much more secure). Opened a new tab @ kbzk.? Came up immediately at approximately 105MB in Activity Monitor. Went to the story about the stupid ICC issuing arrest warrants for dead people. Activity Monitor said Memory Usage went up to about 150MB and stayed stable. While writing this email, without changing either tab, Activity Monitor had memory on both tabs at about 150MB. Currently, I have Brave with 4 windows, DuckDuckGo with 1 window, Firefox with 1 Window, Orion with 1 Windo & Safari with 3 windows. Also Mail & jDownloader open. Actually, I’ve got way more than just that open by the looks of things, although some of those are in the background. Not sure this’ll help, but here you go! The top kzbk is Orion. The second kzbk is Safari. All pretty low considering. When was the last time you ran a disk check Jim? When was the last time you cleaned out your system using Onyx? What about just cleaning Safari?? Hope this helps cjc

Re: What does this mean?
开云体育That’s not good. You really need at least 10% free storage, preferably more, to allow macOS to operate correctly. Chrome is also one of the worst memory hogs as far as browsers go, and allows Google to track everything you do & everywhere you go! The favourite at the moment seems to be Brave (based on Chrome code, but much more secure).? I prefer Orion (based on Safari, but again, much more secure). Clear off some files to an external device until you have at least 13GB free and see if your problem goes away. If you list what sort of Mac you have, you may be able to upgrade your included storage, unless you’re on an Apple Silicon (M-Series processors) Mac. cjc
