Re: Signature images #MacSupportCentral

Good thought, but that only works if we run a server. Many, if not most do not. Mail.app will include an image, if your put one in your contact.?

If it is that important, to the recipient, I suggest that as a solution. Of list members, I have found a desire to have three images show. One in England, but from a defunct list, and he was wearing Victorian re-enactment garb, Roger. One in Belgium who impressed me with his knowledge, but lurks now, hi Ian. And gawd know why, he infuriates me, but I respect his knowledge, Jim S.?

I have been a member of ?various Apple groups since 1998, and posted my image, once. So if someone wants my ugly image, dig now in the early post of this list in groups.io, or send me a private email, and I will send you an image, suitable for your dart board.

It would be more helpful to have your basic system listed in a signature, like below.

Each image adds to the groups’ maximum file size for attachments but having capability of attachments can be useful. My preference would be to embed a link in your “attachment” in the email so it loads when the message is displayed. If you have a place on line where your picture is stored that works out well. If not it’s hard to do without making individual copies of the attachment in each message

Re: Signature images #MacSupportCentral

If you have an image for the person, then put it in your contacts and Mail.app will include it when you read the email. But with every post, it takes up space in the groups data allocation, EVERY TIME.

And I noticed you include an image with your posts.

Re: Testing an Attachment #MacSupportCentral #Mail

Jim R, I agree. They often communicate much more info than the person with a question realizes. It can often suggest areas that the OP does not realize are an issue.?

I used to be a rigging inspector for a company across the US and Canada. Our average lift was 40 metric ton, so it was important. Often they would send along a photo, and I often saw other issues than the one they were asking about. Sometime I even found rare equipment that was not in use and needed elsewhere.

Since image don't repeat in replies through the server, I don't find it as a problem, but very helpful. Just be aware to use a smaller size image. That and I hate it when I am reading posts and the image causes the text to become tiny, especially on my iPad. On my iPhone, I just skip the post.

One situation where attachments could be very helpful would be screenshots from “About this Mac” system reports, or from Actifity Monitor, etc., given that they could replace many paragraphs of machine and OS descriptions, often teased out of the OPs over the course of many messages. Of course, as graphics attachments they’re likely to chew up more memory than even many many paragraphs of ASCIII or html explaining the same thing less accurately.

I have no idea how difficult it would be to police these posts or guide list members to using them efficiently and economically.

Re: Signature images #MacSupportCentral

Jim, look around. I think we have. You started using your photo over a year ago, and no one else has added a photo. One or two use a image, but most are business owners promoting their business. So to make a quick tally:

photo 1 ?/ ?logo 2 (benefit of the doubt) ?/ text signature ?about 5 ?/ ?nothing, not even a text signature ?243

Yeah, it is just a straw poll, but I think the results are in. Although, I suggest we start including a basic text sig occasionally, if not each new thread, of our basic system.

Good point, but I have noticed that with attachments from Windows machines, but not from Macs. Where are these images kept, or is it in Mail.app.

Re: Testing an Attachment #MacSupportCentral #Mail

I can easily do without the small image in the signature. Once, or occasionally is fine, but we don't need it every time. You may be trying to start a trend, but no one seems to be following.

It serves no valuable purpose, a signature with your Mac and OS would do more. When someone starts to ramble on without identifying their system assuming others know, is just wrong, and I am just as guilty as others. I don't reply to some posts, exactly because I am running an older Mac and OS. And we are running a whole bunch of different OS, other than the bleeding edge or beta. On the 4 Apple lists I am on, I think there is someone running 10.4 and several are running 10.5.8.?

Others might not use such a small image. Let's see, about 250 current members, times about 45 posts yesterday, times 15kB, that is about 61.6 million kB a year of just repeated member images. If you want to know what the person looks like, ask for their image in a private email. I know my curiosity has peaked on a couple and I have their image in my Contacts and it appears in Mail.app when I read emails. I even have your's Jim Saklad in my Contacts. Then again, their are others that never use a given name, so I don't think that they are going to post a selfie.

What I would rather, if we are going to burn up electrons, is a proper attribution in the quotes. Such as:

On Oct 28, 2019, at 8:28 AM, DaveC via Groups.Io wrote: ?

rather than, Dave (the other). Not only does the first tell me exactly who, but approximately where to find the quote in the thread.

And heaven knows, that you, Jim S, often don't quote and seldom attribute. And we occasionally, chose the wrong bit of info, or assume on that bit of info, to base our comments. I know I have, because I could not trace it back to the proper post.

For example, in the thread, "My Power mac keeps restarting", the OP never mentioned what the form factor of his Mac was other than Power mac running El Capitain (sic), one person said iMac, another said Mac Pro, where I asked what form factor because no PowerMac can run OS X 10.11, and gave an example of doing the replacement of a fan on a MBP.

Posting as required. My first Apple was a 2e to replace the Heathkit H89 I built back in the 70’s. Currently have 4 assorted Apples, an iPad, and a couple of iPhones in the house.?

Same for my Eudora. A pain! But inline graphics disappear when the message is deleted.
