Re: Using Font Book on iMac
开云体育If you haven't already done so ... You could check whether the problem occurs?in Safe Mode. One of the things it does is to clear the fonts cache, which can become corrupted. ?It also does some other things, which could prevent conflicts. Start up your Mac in safe mode If the problem didn't occur in Safe Mode, reboot to exit Safe Mode. ?Check if the problem still occurs. If the problem wasn't resolved by booting in Safe Mode, then backup your fonts by exporting them before continuing.? File > Export? You can make Font Book validate one or more fonts. ?You can also check whether there is a duplicate font that could be interfering. ?See "Validate fonts" and "Resolve duplicate fonts" on the following webpage?in Apple Support's Font Book User Guide: Install and validate fonts in Font Book on Mac On Feb 7, 2025, at 4:10?PM, Donna Ellis via groups.io <ellisdonna70@...> wrote:

Thank you, Brent.? I did as you suggested, the found items were mainly about iPhone batteries, but one result said that battery calibration was no longer required after OS 14.
?
I recall calibrating batteries in previous laptops - discharge fully, recharge fully - can't hurt to try it.

A modem is an antiquated device that modulates and de-modulates an analog audio signal. Cable service use gateways. Kind of like facial tissue vs Kleenex. Your cable gateway whether rented or owned, probably offers WiFi, unless it is old or you turned off the WiFi in it. Did you save it from your old house? That gateway might not have had WiFi.Either way, you can still “forget” the Spectrum Mobile and any other network on the phone. If your gateway is anything like mine, the WiFi goes down frequently, there by running up my cellular data usage. Mine is a Arris XB6, probably a couple of generations back, but still better than the pile of crap Compost kept giving me. Brent ?

What confuses me, however, is that sometimes my phone shows “Spectrum Wi-Fi” in the upper left corner of the screen but in the Control panel it says I’m on my own router’s SSID. I don’t THINK the phone would alternate between two Wi-Fi hosts without any intervention from me.

Except that I don’t HAVE a Spectrum gateway device. I don’t know whether this is the what’s happening, but I know that Comcast makes the Wi-Fi routers that it rents to customers also function as Wi-Fi hotspots for other Comcast customers. So, while I’m able to connect to an SSID named “Spectrum Mobile,” I’m also certain that it doesn’t reside on any device that I own OR rent (I own BOTH my router AND my cable “modem.” I’m guessing that one of my neighbors is (knowingly or unknowingly) providing me that access.

You can go into Settings > WiFi, and forget whichever wifi devices or access points you do not which to use. ?This is also where you would see which WiFi network the phone is using.? So it is possible your Nest could be down and your phone connected.? I have both my Compost/ Xfinity gateway and my Airport set up as two separate wifi networks. They have very different names, unrelated to me, as my apartment and the next one over have many visible networks, about half of which I can tell you which unit they belong to from the name along. At least they are all locked except the public access points, and it appears many more are turned off.? On my iPhone Xr On Feb 7, 2025, at 09:02, jimrobertson via groups.io <jimrobertson@...> wrote:

Using Font Book on iMac
Hi! My fonts have always transferred from one Mac to another without problem. Previously, I was running 2017 27” iMac and Font Book worked flawlessly. Last year we purchased 2023 24” iMac. It is running 15.3. If I use Pages App and free type (or use the text box), the fonts correctly appear on the document. But when I open Font Book to change certain appearances of a specific letter in the document, an undesired character is pasted.
I open font book to the correct font. From the selected font, I choose a specialty character. But another character appears when I PASTE, rather than the character I selected. At first I assumed Font Book had become corrupted. But the fonts that come with the Mac are ok, as are some of the purchased fonts. I especially have trouble with the Samantha Font purchased in 2016 from Mighty Deals. It worked flawlessly in the 2017 iMac. The font is OTF v. 2. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. Donna Ellis |
iCloud Private Relay, yay or nay
开云体育Last April, when I joined a web forum “X marks the Scot” the site owner messaged me and advised me to turn off iCloud Private Relay because in his opinion it was basically a flavor of VPNs that purport to increase user privacy by bouncing messages through a somewhat random list of servers so that the original poster is harder to discover. The site owner claimed that VPNs actually are TARGETED by hackers and actually can INCREASE the risk of a stop along the way being hacked or the original poster being attacked.Something made me review that warning again today, and I realized that no one here ventured a response to my original query. I turned next to Apple Web support, where the 2023 instructions regarding how to turn off Private Relay for a given site no long match what’s available in the current version of Safari for the Mac. I can repost the original message, but I’d be curious to know if anyone has affirmation or refutation to offer regarding the value of Apple’s means of trying to protect Safari users. Thanks so much,

You can still call Apple Support if you think this has something to do with the upgrade.

Which Wi-Fi network is my iPhone on?
开云体育I have an iPhone 14 Pro, running iOS 18.3. I also have a Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd generation). The thermostat frequently displays “Offline” in my Nest Home app. My home router is an AmpliFi Wi-Fi 6 model, and when I check to see if my phone is connected to it, in the Settings that’s indicated, EXCEPT that on my iPhone’s home screen, often what appears in the upper left corner of the screen is “Spectrum Wi-Fi,” rather than the name of my home Wi-Fi network.Spectrum IS my ISP, but when I open Wi-Fi settings on the phone, I’m listed as connected to my own router by Wi-Fi (although some networks with “Spectrum” in their name are in the list (all of them PW-protected). Curiously, I CAN manually connect my phone to one named “Spectrum Mobile” (without entering a PW), but not to another named “Spectrum Setup 1714” (a PW is demanded). When I’m purposefully connected to the “Spectrum Moblile” network, Ookla Speediest results are dramatically inferior to when purposefully connected to my home Wi-Fi 6 router (confirmed in the Settings app and/or the phone’s control panel), whether or NOT the splash screen of my iPhone is currently displaying “Spectrum Wi-Fi” or just “Spectrum” ?in the upper left corner of the screen (DL rates approximating 70 mb/sec vs. 700 mb/sec when connected to my router. Why is this relevant to the issue with my thermostat? Because the embedded Google help screens reachable from the thermostat suggest that one reason for the thermostat being “Offline” is that my phone and the thermostat may be connecting to different SSIDs (and the thermostat’s connection needs to be specified manually (both network name and PW). On the other hand, the thermostat does also report that it’s battery voltage is < 3.8, and because the thermostat itself is aging (I bought it in 2018), it’s also possible it simply can no longer hold the charge it needs to remain on the network (Google’s “help” screens say that the device will disconnect from Wi-FI but keep receiving manual inputs in order to continue heating or cooling the house (the former VERY important at the moment because nighttime temps here in Bozeman, MT are currently < 0°F). Readers might be able to confirm that their phones are displaying the name of their ISP but connected to their routers even if they don’t have Nest thermostats. That would be useful information to me.

Re: Charging anomalie after 15.3 update
Thank you for helping think this through, Bev.
?
The problem (as I perceive it) is not a sudden or severe battery drain, but rather the fact that the battery miraculously recharges itself without external power.
?
My working assumption, which is obviously open to challenge, is that the OS is mis-reporting or mis-measuring the battery state of charge.

Re: Charging anomalie after 15.3 update
开云体育Have you checked whether a specific app/process is causing the battery drain? View energy consumption in Activity Monitor on Mac There are a couple things that can cause excessive battery drain after an OS upgrade: * Your system can experience Spotlight reindexing and possibly other system updating, which can be intensive. ?This can take hours, depending on the system. ?If this is what's happening, then plug in your Mac and leave it on for it until it's complete. * Sometimes an app doesn't behave properly after a system upgrade. ?If you notice something like that in Activity Monitor, then check with its vendor for an update. * If all else fails, you should be able to contact Apple Support about problems caused by an upgrade. ?However, do the previous steps first. ?Someone previously posted Apple Support's phone number as?1-800-275-2273 On Feb 7, 2025, at 8:25?AM, Keith Parr via groups.io <kg.parr@...> wrote:

Thank you Jim. ?Coconut Battery tells me that battery health is 80% but otherwise adds little.? If I'm quick enough, I'll see what it says when I next see a sudden drop in charge.

Given that this only started happening with 15.3, I'm strongly suspecting a bug but you never know ...

Charging anomalie after 15.3 update
I'd appreciate feedback, please, whether this is something peculiar to my machine or more widely known / experienced.? Any further hints and tips would be a bonus!
?
I am using a MacBook Pro 15-Inch "Core i9" 2.3 Touch 2019 2.3 GHz.? Since updating to 15.3 from 15.2 it has been reporting its battery charge erratically.? Yesterday I saw it was at 1% so I immediately put it on charge, whereupon the charge was displayed as 51%.? Something similar happened today and I recorded the battery charge - please see the attached screenshot.
?
After 09:17 the machine was not connected to the charger, but the charge (apparently) went from ~70% to ~25% in next to no time, then back up to 45%, then down to ~15% and then up again to ~25%.
?
It seems to me probable that it is the very low readings which are erroneous as the green lines in the screenshot show the sort of linear decline one might reasonably expect.
?
The battery health is reported as "normal".

Re: A question for classical music lovers
开云体育There used to be issues with copying DVDs that were copyright or DCMA protected.?In 2012, I had a problem with an MS 2011 Office installer disc. I had long suspected that my player was slightly out of alignment. I bought and tried a Super Drive on my 2008 MBP. The MBP was not on the “approved” list. Turns out there was a hack for to remove the requirement Apple had put in the drive.? I was on a 90-day remote work assignment, so I returned the Super Drive and bought a much cheaper LG brand drive. Re: A question for classical music lovers
There are a number of apps for creating podcasts that let you manage the routing and audio and video from multiple app, and record the overall result. Googling podcast apps will show these. ? A simple capture can be done with Quicktime screen recordings. ?Out of the box, that will do the video but not the audio, but using a virtual audio driver like BlackHole will let you capture the audio output and make it available for recording. ?The minor downside is you won’t be able to hear the audio while the recording is in progress.
?
As for the legality, the last time I saw this come up (in Canada) was when people routinely set up a VCR to record TV. ?The ruling was that it’s OK to record copyrighted material for personal use, but there was some ambiguity about how long you can keep it. ?I bet Randy knows the answer for the US. ? |
