Yes, I¡¯m pretty sure that something rubbery would help. How about washing-up (dish-washing) gloves?
It would also be better if the cover clicked into place. As it is, you just have to turn it until won¡¯t turn any further.

This morning I remembered that many years ago we used rubber finger tips in the office to more easily flip through piles of paper. I'm wondering whether something like that would make it easier to deal with the slippery battery cover. I might get some to try out the next time one of his AirTags needs its battery changed.
