After saying that I had never done it before, last night one of my husband's AirTags notified us that its battery needed changing. I used those Apple Support directions and it was very straightforward. I had a little problem getting the battery cover back on. As you mentioned, it's slippery!
This morning I remembered that many years ago we used rubber finger tips in the office to more easily flip through piles of paper. I'm wondering whether something like that would make it easier to deal with the slippery battery cover. I might get some to try out the next time one of his AirTags needs its battery changed.

It must be a 2032 cell. These are the dimensions, 20 mm diameter and 3.2 mm thickness. Also, the + side must be facing up.
I find that the highly polished surface of an Air Tag makes it difficult to turn the battery cover.
