Speaking of protocols, Mac laptops have supported Thunderbolt connectors for 14 years, and Thunderbolt-capable USB-C connectors since 2016.
Personally, I make a point of spending extra to get the current-edition Thunderbolt cables, and therefore never have to worry whether it will connect properly with a USB-C device.
