I tried Fldigi on my Raspberry Pi 5 with the last version of Raspberry Pi OS (bookworm). This version use Wayland (like the Ubuntu version you tried) as default instead of X11. From the release notes:

Pi-OS is a version of Debian for the Raspberry Pi. It's very much a linux distro. Download it from the Raspberry Pi site to a SD and it will come up and lead you through the setup. You can get a 32bit

Yes indeed. USB drivers are critical for Linux. Renesas and FTDI are the cream of the crop as far as kernel drivers go for Linux. Prolific works but is at the bottom of the list. Many others won't
