Networking a selection of Hercules systems running VM/370rel6
Hello!
Let us presuppose I have gotten a Hercules setup running the currently available release of the community edition of VM/370rle6. Not of course the two disk setup I normally run. What would be involved in having it reach out and connect to other similar systems, and even exchange messages, in the same way we send email to each other, and also files. And to do so on a routine basis. This is an interesting concept, but it will be a difficult one to properly grok. Now why is an unhappy Yeti doing outside a McDonalds in a corner of a town that's a suburb of Pittsburgh. ----- Gregg C Levine gregg.drwho8@... What about Moshix's HNET ?

Hello!
Now remember I mentioned VM/370rel6 here, because that is the list focus. As is I believe it was possible for a system running a full featured system running it to do so. But I am not sure where it is located in the document libraries preserved elsewere, ----- Gregg C Levine gregg.drwho8@... "This signature fought the Time Wars, time and again." I haven¡¯t figured out how, but I have seen that there are VM/370 systems on HNET.

What would be involved in I would say, you need a version of RSCS that supports Network Job Entry (NJE). It is surely possible to update the current version of RSCS in VM/370 CE for that, but I am not the one who can do it. :-)

Hello, Is it possible for the SDI CTCI product to connect two CTCA devices defined in Hercules across the Internet? I? think that is the purpose of the SDI CTCI product. If that is the case, getting multiple operating systems running under Hercules to communicate is possible in full or half duplex. Sincerely yours,? Bertram Moshier? WB8ERT? Hello, I thought I read something about a program that allows you to connect to another VM system from your CMS account or by dialing into the program running in a virtual machine. What is it that I'm remembering? Thank you, Bertram Moshier On Thu, Aug 1, 2024, 03:32 Dave Wade via <dave.g4ugm=[email protected]> wrote:

There is a software package that is already part of VM/CE called XNET.? This software allows two or more VM/370 systems to connect via a CTC device (using Hercules CTCE, not CTCI), and you can then remotely logon to and use the VM system(s) on the other end of the CTCs, and vice versa.? Communication can even pass through multiple VM systems to your target system if they are all connected via CTC.? This software is something akin to PVM (Passthrough VM, an IBM product from the period).
?
But to send files or messages between VM systems, you'll need the RSCS NJE modifications.

I agree with the second, not so sure about the first. And I looked at the website that Dave M, supplied earlier, (or was it one of his cats who typed it? Or perhaps it was one of his other staff, and their cats?) However at the moment setting things up along with that site is currently a little beyond me. But setting up that example you cited, that looks promising. ----- Gregg C Levine gregg.drwho8@... "This signature fought the Time Wars, time and again." Hello!
At this point in time it is not relevant. Now what's that statue doing in your garden now? Don't blink! Yes I know I hinted that the original was written by Dave M, it was not. It was posted to cause a similar response. ----- Gregg C Levine gregg.drwho8@... "This signature fought the Time Wars, time and again." Hi Dave,
?
In my copy of VM/CE V1.R1.2, dated July 19, 2022, there is an XNET userid in the directory.? The XNET materials are on the 191 and 193 disks. The documentation for XNET is in the distribution VM370CE.V1R1.2.zip file, in the root directory structure.
?
The code on the XNET userid is at level 1.4.0, an includes a modification that Bob Bolch made to it to support model 5 terminals.? But the documentation in the zip file is at level 1.2.0.? I do have the 1.4.0 documentation though, if you want it.? The only difference between 1.2.0 and 1.4.0 is the model 5 change plus some stability improvements for the CTC connection; both are internal changes.? The documentation therefore is essentially the same.
?

Hello!
I'm not Dave, he had a problem with a statue. So can you please post your documentation to the files-area? And can you please include a note regarding what was stated here? ----- Gregg C Levine gregg.drwho8@... "This signature fought the Time Wars, time and again." When you get a chance, could you delete the old XNETV120.ZIP file in files section (it is under your name from when you copied everything over from Yahoo Groups), and I will upload the? XNET 1.4.0 package and documentation to the files section. ? Regards, Bob |
