This group is for all folks running the original IBM VM/370 Release 6 operating system (or later (e.g. VMTCE (Community Edition)) on Hercules. Like the other early IBM operating systems this version has always been in the public domain and so can be freely distributed. The base version as supplied by IBM is lacking in many facilities. IBM solved this by providing additional extension products which were licensed and so are not available. There are however many user enhancements available which can be installed. In addition, in order to get users up and running quickly updated "releases" of VM/370 included the most popular updates are available for download, so novices can start to learn VM without having to delve into the system internals. It is intended that this wiki will provide information on the base release and these updates.
The available versions are here :-

Re: XNET v1.4.1
Hello!
That's what I wanted Bob. Great! Now what happens after I've got Hercules running on a Pi3, and the OS is that copy of VM. What next? We'd to know how to configure the configure file further to support it. And of course logging into the release to start things and enable things. ----- Gregg C Levine gregg.drwho8@... XNET v1.4.1
I've uploaded XNET version 1.4.1 to the files section.? This upload includes the full XNET package including the latest documentation.? For VM/CE V1.R1.2 users, note that this version is identical to the 1.4.0 version you have preinstalled on VM/CE (on the XNET userid).? The version change to 1.4.1 was simply to denote the difference between this version with its updated documentation versus the parts and pieces that are in VM/CE.? Again, 1.4.0 and 1.4.1 are functionally identical.

The materials are now in the Files section of this group, named "xnetv141.zip".

From the XNET documentation intro:
XNET connects together two or more S/370-based VM systems for the purposes of allowing remote logon.? XNET allows 3270 terminal users to log on to userids on other similar VM system(s) that are currently online to XNET.? Likewise, a user on one of the other VM system(s) would be able to log on to a userid on your system.? You still retain access control for your own systems via the system directory and passwords. ? XNET provides the management and transport of 3270 data between systems in order to facilitate remote logons and connections to other VM systems.? XNET can support multiple users and multiple systems, and supports two types of data transport mechanisms.? XNET is a fully asynchronous mini-operating system that runs in a virtual machine. ? Hello!
I'm not Dave, he had a problem with a statue. So can you please post your documentation to the files-area? And can you please include a note regarding what was stated here? ----- Gregg C Levine gregg.drwho8@... "This signature fought the Time Wars, time and again." Re: Networking a selection of Hercules systems running VM/370rel6
Hi Dave,
?
In my copy of VM/CE V1.R1.2, dated July 19, 2022, there is an XNET userid in the directory.? The XNET materials are on the 191 and 193 disks. The documentation for XNET is in the distribution VM370CE.V1R1.2.zip file, in the root directory structure.
?
The code on the XNET userid is at level 1.4.0, an includes a modification that Bob Bolch made to it to support model 5 terminals.? But the documentation in the zip file is at level 1.2.0.? I do have the 1.4.0 documentation though, if you want it.? The only difference between 1.2.0 and 1.4.0 is the model 5 change plus some stability improvements for the CTC connection; both are internal changes.? The documentation therefore is essentially the same.
?

Hello!
At this point in time it is not relevant. Now what's that statue doing in your garden now? Don't blink! Yes I know I hinted that the original was written by Dave M, it was not. I agree with the second, not so sure about the first. And I looked at the website that Dave M, supplied earlier, (or was it one of his cats who typed it? Or perhaps it was one of his other staff, and their cats?) However at the moment setting things up along with that site is currently a little beyond me. But setting up that example you cited, that looks promising. ----- Gregg C Levine gregg.drwho8@... "This signature fought the Time Wars, time and again."
