Best of luck for October!

Hello everyone!

?

First off, my apologies that I am running late, I’ve had a few things pop up can I cannot delay before leaving town.? I expect to be arriving on site by mid-afternoon.? If anyone needs me for anything, you can text me at 717-891-8380, and I will call back ASAP.? Of course, if it is an emergency, call me at that number, be sure to leave a voice mail.? You could try pushing any number after the message starts to bypass the long business message.

?

My sincere apologies, but these truly are not something I could postpone.

Would someone please call me now so I know how things are until I get there?? That would be greatly appreciated.? 717-891-8380

?

Anyone arriving, please do not worry, we’ll take care of things when I arrive.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

?

Well, today’s the first day of the first star party in over 2 years, and at Susquehannock State Park.?? While the weather isn’t forecast to be great today and tonight, and I recommend arriving tomorrow morning to avoid the storms forecast later (1 to 2 inches of rain tonight), if that can fit in your plans, we are being blessed with a playground that had a week of rain before and during the 2019 party, and absolutely no mud or vehicle tracks on the ballfield observing area, so please don’t be discouraged.

?

The forecast is also saying that Thursday through Sunday will be sunny and mostly pleasant, with clear skies, so if you are wondering what this location can do, this is the best I could ever hope for in terms of astronomy AND camping.

?

Early evening objects include the crescent moon (setting), Mercury, Venus, and Mars at sunset, with Saturn and Jupiter arising after 8PM.? Oh, did I mention how the milky was brilliantly visible almost every night during that week of rain in 2019?

We are both trying to find another food truck type service to substitute for him, but with such short notice it might not happen.
I suggest at this point you should plan on bringing your own portable BBQ grill, coolers and food, or using the grills that are available at the park.

I will have info on the local eateries, but I must remind you that this place is darker specifically because there isn't that much around it besides Amish farmers.
I will make updates as things change.

I can try to provide alternatives, and will keep everyone updated on any and all ideas and progress we manage.

2021 Parties

开云体育

Hello ALL !? Just a quick blast!

?

We have TWO parties scheduled this year, and it looks like we will have succeeded in getting a nice turnout for both!? There is still some room for more at both parties. ?September’s party, which starts next week, is getting closer to my stated limit of 50, so if you know anyone that might be interested, this is the time to suggest they register ASAP.? I am leaving registration up until Monday, with no increase (that would be more work).? Once shut it down, registration will go up at the gate.

?

With a month to go for October’s party, we do have a decent amount of people registered (some folks are going to both parties), and I expect once September’s is over, we will see more people register for October as we get closer.

?

The Busy Bee vendor is planning to offer food from Thursday evening to Sunday morning at both parties.? Please patronize him so he tells me he’s busy.? He has been helping make this party succeed for about the last 10 years, and in this neck of the woods, it is nice to have such a great choice nearby.? Andy also has some wonderful astrophotographs he’s taken with his digital SLR.

?

I am already making plans for next year, and with more lead time, we can include more.? I’ll share some of my plans next week at the party.

?

Looking forward to seeing everyone there! Thank you everyone for your support!?

Phil

Yes correct Jeff.? Tenters and smaller campers are allowed on the field for the duration.? You are permitted to go touting during daylight hours.? The field is hardback, but tent-peg friendly, dries quickly, no mud, and has a gentle slope down towards the south, allowing a decent southern, Eastern, and western horizon, north star visible, yet no lights or large light domes visible on clear nights.
RVs in the parking lot nearer the bathrooms also have a good observing field.? There are 4 group camping sites in the trees behind the RV lot, and are not always used.? We are "renting" the largest (100 sites).??
For this area, even when it rained most of the week in 2019, fog was at a minimum, holes in the clouds revealed the milky way, even visible when the moon peaked over the eastern trees.? Nice.

Want to confirm that tent campers can set up our scopes at our campsites and not have to transport or leave untended elsewhere for observing. It's been that way in the past, but need to be sure. 1--I will have an on-site shower available at both parties. This had to get approved, with restrictions.? Waste water must be collected, so if you wish to take advantage of it, Please bring a few empty gallon jugs each and i'll explain more later.

2--I have arranged for one handicap portable toilet to be placed on the field near the batting cage for September's party.? If attendance picks up before October's party, i will do the same for it.? My thoughts are it will save a lot of hikes tot he flush toilet, allow you to keep your night vision better, and might also help isolate attendees from the public restrooms.

I have plans for 2022 I will discuss at the parties.? Much depends on attendance this year.? Attendance is not as much as it could be, so if you want to help, either register if you didn't, for one or both parties, and please spread the word to your clubs and friends.? Prices will remain the same until the end of August.

Re: LOCAL EATERIES

Hello everyone!

?

I’ve been asked about restaurants in the area.? Here is a quick answer….

?

I was in the area yesterday to finalize details with the park supervisor.? I ate at the Rawlinsville Hotel Restaurant and Bar.? Food was decent and not overpriced, service slow early afternoon, with a very light load.? OK if you have patience.? Buck has a couple of pizza places, one serving grill choices.? All are 5-7 miles away.? Muddy Run Park also has a food concession near the boat launch, a bit closer.? There is also a Giant Food store in Buck, with take-out meals available, as well as supplies.? Not sure if they have a restaurant open, due to Covid.? There are more choices in Willow Street and Quarryville, nearby towns.

?

This site IS in the middle of nowhere, which is a major reason it is dark.? I will encourage everyone to patronize Andy, our on-site food vendor of the Busy Bee, as much as possible.? His food has always been excellent and reasonably priced, and is planning to be on site offering food from Thursday evening to Sunday morning.?

?

I spoke with Andy this week.? He has provided food service to this event for many years.? He is following all Covid precautions.? He plans on taking orders and making them fresh while you wait.? This also takes some patience, since he doesn’t have a crew this year.? He had to close his restaurant during Covid last year, but still does event catering, and enjoys this event both as a vendor and as an amateur astronomer/astrophotographer.?

?

?

EVERYONE:? I WILL BE POSTING IMPORTANT UPDATES THIS WEEKEND, ASAP.? PLEASE STAY TUNED!?? I AM ADDING AMENITIES AND PLANNING FOR NEXT YEAR, AS WELL.? ALL COVID PRECAUTIONS ARE BEING TAKEN, ALL ACTIVITIES ARE OUTSIDE, AND WE ARE KEEPING RISKS TO AN ABSOLUTE MINIMUM.?

YOUR SUPPORT IS NEEDED FOR THIS AND FUTURE EVENTS!? ?THERE IS STILL SPACE STILL AVAILABLE FOR BOTH SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER PARTIES, PLEASE LET YOUR CLUBS AND FRIENDS KNOW, PREREGISTRATION CLOSES AUGUST 31.?

Thank you!? Phil
