Re: Propellers for Yanmar 1GM10

Mark,

We have a MaxProp folding 3 blade on our S2-27. 12x9.2 set at a 22 degree pitch if the documentation I have is still accurate. We have a 2GM20 in our boat not the 1GM10. I haven't checked the speed lately, but when I got the boat and took it up the Neuse River to get it hauled out I recall we were making ~6kts at ~3000 rpm according to the GPS. We'll have to get together to compare our two boats.

cruise at a little over 5 at just under 3000. Not sure I could do much
better but I am thinking about a 1000 mile river trip in a year or so.

Less reverse thrust than the three blade it replaced, but the extra sailing speed is worth it : )
Marc,

The important question is what RPM were you able achieve @ full throttle? (BTW, often tachometers maybe off by 10-15% and need calibrating with a strobe). Ideally you should be able to get max RPMs.. at least 3400 at full throttle. AND! There should be no black exhaust smoke after running full throttle for 5-10 mins. If you cannot achieve 3400-3600 RPM and/or there is black exhaust smoke, there is too much pitch. <this assumes a clean bottom> An over-pitched situation, leads to carbon deposits in the exhaust elbows and other internal parts. Yanmar mechanics I know suggest running at 3000 RPMs plus as a rule to reduce carbonization.

I would expect that you should be able to achieve about 6 to 6.6 knots.

Hi Mark,

I measured my prop last weekend. It is 12" (can't find a pitch marking).
and leaves about 1-1/4" clearance to the hull. I max out at about 5.5
knots, so you may already have the highest output setup. Over the course
of 1000 miles, I bet you'll appreciate it.

Yanmar 1GM10 water impeller screws-Found a screwdriver

For those like me that went nuts trying to get the screws off the water impeller, I have found a solution. A "Yankee" offset wratcheting screwdriver part number 3400. It is an antique but is available on Ebay, last I checked. It is made by North Bros. Mfg. Co., a division of Stanley Works. Works like a charm! Allen.

I just bought a 12 X 10 Martec folding but it's not installed yet. Most of what I found pointed to a 13 X 9 as the recommended size, but I don't do much motoring and found a good deal on this one. My main priority was the folding aspect.

Re: Refinishing grab rails

Mark Swart

I plan to start mine this week, but I have no intention of taking them off! Just not worth the hassle, but I live 15 minutes from my boat so it's no problem to go back and forth as I add coats of cetol.

Re: Refinishing grab rails

Hi Allen, i did this two years ago. ?Not that hard of a job. ?The hardest part was removing two bolts as they were on quite tight....and i wore down the screwhead...careful use of dremel tool did the job from the bottom. ? Other issue....the stainless tubes that stand-off the rail from the doghouse have teak bungs inserted. ?Three of mine were rotting out...So i used epoxy to make up new inserts. ?I also ended up replacing a couple of the bolts.

I had no water ingress into the laminate...luckily...

Refinishing took a while..i did it over the winter and put on 14 coats....used the west marine branded Epifanes..the look great.

one point, when reinstalling, as you do with any deck hardware, upon initial mountimg don't torque things own until the sealant can form a gasket. ?once done go back and tighten them...

it does take 2 people to donthe job, but i actually was able to ake them off by myself...reinstall takes two people.

all in all a straightfoward project.

Hi Allen,
?
The Yahoo S2 Yachts group just had a nice, long exchange about this topic about three weeks ago. ?
?
It can be a can o' worms if you have had any water infiltration though the bolt holes in the coach roof. ?If water has gotten in, however, it's better to fix the core rot sooner rather than later. ?I did this job on my old 7.3.

Start here:?

I hope this helps.

Re: Bimini top mounting?

Mark Swart

Hey there George! I remember yours and how well it worked out - yep, I'm looking at the six foot model. Funny thing -- I actually have more headroom under the boom on this boat than I did on the Beneteau, so I think it's going to work out pretty well. Just got back from working on her a few minutes ago, trying to take out the old knotmeter and that thing is in SOLID. Added a couple of power outlets so I can use my droid phone as my knotmeter/navigation/jukebox. There is a cool racing app called Sailing Tactician that shows speed, VMG and you can set up waypoints. Hoping to get in a few races this spring before we move.

Re: Bimini top mounting?

Hey Mark,
I put a Taylormade generic bimini on mine some years ago.? Don't remember where I got it.? iboats.com maybe.?? It's 36 in high and four feet front to back.? It gives me a couple inches between the boom and bimini.? Makes it hard to stand up though.? The four foot length works for me since I single hand most of the time and it gives me easy access if I want to go forward.? The six foot length might be better for you since you got the wife and kids.? But it will restrict your movement forward somewhat.? I have the frame mounted just outside the cockpit coaming, about where the nonskid starts on the deck.?
?
The quality is ok.? Not what you would get with a custom built bimini.? But it was just a couple hundred bucks.? Been worth it on those shorching hot days on Ky Lake.? I'm sure you remember those.?
?
I have pictures somewhere.? If I can't find them I'll get some more this weekend.?
?
Say hi to the wife and kids for me.?
?
George

So I'm a die hard lover of biminis in the summer, but my boat doesn't have one. Looks like it'll be no problem given the great clearance under the boom, just curious if others have installed them and if you mounted them to the coaming or further outboard on the deck. I guess there are pros and cons either way. Right now I'm thinking of a smaller width one on the coaming. Shouldn't be as shaky that way. I'm planning on going generic and mounting it myself. If anyone has one and has pics I'd love to see them just to see how others have done it. Thanks,
-Mark

Re: Bimini top mounting?

I'd love to have a generic solution to the bimini as well. Please let us know what you find that works.

Re: shaft packing size

Mark Swart

Just measured a few weeks ago -- shaft is 3/4. Packing is fairly malleable if its anywhere close.

shaft packing size

anyone remember the appropriate sized shaft packing? my assumption is we all have 3/4" shafts and same size stuffing boxes...

Re: Speedseal and 1GM10

dave, i too have hex head bolts..P.O. installed..a bit tiny..i use either a small crescent wrench or needlenose pliers as the one bolt behind the shaft pulley is a pita...
