Re: water in bilge...keel stepped s2 27
Mark - were you only getting water in the front bilge compartment where the forward keel bolt was located?

For sure I get water in from the mast, but in this case I was getting some water BEFORE the mast was stepped - but it did rain a few times - 2 inches of rain a few days before. --- In s227classassociation@..., Mark Swart <mark_swart@...> wrote:

I still get a little bit of rainwater down the inside of the mast. Your sealing of the ceiling may need attention. Sticky messy job trying to tighten bolts smeared in caulk, but not complicated. I redid mine when I had the headliner open for deck core repairs.
Those were due to chain plate leakage, which let a surprising amount of water in. But that water accumulated under the settee benches. The other main source of bilge water is the ice box. It drains directly to the bilge. I'd like to change that someday, but we've made a habit of pumping it out at the end of our weekends. Bob |

I isolated my leaks to the mast by using silicone sealant and a small piece of plastic to goop up the drain hole in the foremost compartment of the bilge. All the water accumulated there after it was sealed. Since then, I purchased a 3'6 length of 1/2 hose, and took a small funnel and cut it to fit right in the bilge right behind the mast. This tube will route the water to the aft bilge compartment where the pickup for the manual bilge pump is. I'm hoping that if nothing else, it will keep most of my keel bolts and bilge dry, and allow me to easily pump out what comes in through the mast. |

i'm hoping it's not the keel-hull joint - i thought it was fixed and the boat has only been in the water for 15 days, the last 2 days with the stick in. My lazarettes are dry - if the design is the same as mine, the channel gets dirty very easily and that might cause water issues - it DOES cause the wood backing of the lid to rot though and I had to fix with epoxy. I wonder if you could make a rubber seal to place on the inside of the lid? Rick --- In s227classassociation@..., "uswa174" <uswa174@...> wrote:

I get water into my boat via the cockpit lazarettes. When I wash down the boat really well, or after a particularly heavy rainstorm, water will back up in the "channels" where the seats/lids fit, and the water drips into the lazarettes...maybe the piano hinge is the culprit, but I really don't know. Regardless, that water ends up in my bilge, since I've seen the path(s) it takes. I have been trying to figure out a way to make that seat lid joint water tight... Can't help you with the keel step question, though, since my boat is deck stepped. ____________________ Dave S. s/v Clio 1987 S2 27, hull #80 --- In s227classassociation@..., "s227classassociation" <rperret@...> wrote:

water in bilge...keel stepped s2 27
has anyone found an other areas on their keel stepped 27 where water accumulates in bilge? i have re torqued the keel bolts, glassed the keel hull joint (probably not perfectly though..), and of course realize the mast brings in water.
i don't think a leaky stuffing box woud cause water to go into the bilge as it accumulates in the area under the engine. any thoughts of rain wayer entering rhe bilge appteciated. and no i haven't tasted the water to see if it's salty.... thanks! Rick |
Re: Bimini top mounting?
I just installed a 6 foot long Taylormade, 42" high. Boom clearance is OK when unfolded, but I need to lift the boom to set up or take down the bimini. The length was a bit optimistic as well. The winch handle swing was going to interfere. I ordered up some 7/8" shaft collars from Mcmaster-Carr; two aluminum and a nylon unit for each side. Now at least it's adjustable. Check the photo section for a detail.
Plenty o' shade though! Bob |
Re: The plan came together...
Dave good to hear you're in!
I launched last Saturday...some trepdation as i repacked my stuffing box, but did it carefully and so far she's holding fine. My mast goes up Saturday...with some new standing rigging. Had a minor setback with my ProFurl furler. Apparently the P.O. used a 9/32" forestay which is a bit larger than the 7/32" standard forestay. Profurls come with a device called a "wrapstop" that you place around the forestay just above the headfoil near the masthead. It looks like a flying saucer sleeve that you tighten around the top of the forestay to prevent halyard wrap when furling...it had a 9/32" drilled hole..when i ordered the new forestay i did it to spec at 7/32. of course when i tried to cinch on the wrapstop it was too big...argh....i though crap....3 days til mast stepping...what to do? Brilliant idea, the magic repair materal....EPOXY! Based upon how the wrapstop was constructed, i was able to fill the hole.....and now ican re-drill a 7/32" hole.....saving me $80 for a new part.....which is out of stock....love that MAS epoxy! Fair winds to all. And safe sailing. via iPad |
The plan came together...
Launched my boat and stepped the mast today. I *do* love it when all goes according to plan. Boat is dry, and now securely tied in its slip. Whew! The weather forecast for this coming Saturday is great for Southern Lake Michigan, so I am looking forward to my first sail of the season:
NEARSHORE MARINE FORECAST NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CHICAGO/ROMEOVILLE IL 300 PM CDT THU MAY 17 2012 FOR WATERS WITHIN FIVE NAUTICAL MILES OF SHORE ON LAKE MICHIGAN NORTHERLY ISLAND TO CALUMET HARBOR-CALUMET HARBOR TO GARY- GARY TO BURNS HARBOR-BURNS HARBOR TO MICHIGAN CITY- 300 PM CDT THU MAY 17 2012 SOUTH WINDS AROUND 10 KT BECOMING SOUTHEAST 10 TO 15 KT BY MIDDAY. WAVES 1 FT OR LESS. Why does launch and haul out always cause me so much stress? It's not like I haven't done this more times than I care to count...some degree of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, I guess... Cheers, and fair winds, y'all. ____________________ Dave S. s/v Clio 1987 S2 27, hull #80 |

Yes you can get the plastic bushings from Grainger.? They come in different lengths and diameters and thicknesses so you can get what you need.??I posted here before about them. I am in Singapore today and do not have access to teh information.

Mark, I'm glad to hear about the 7.9 bearings...that should make it easier to find replacements. I don't think that the pintle holes on my boat's gudgeon are enlarged, but I do have some rudder slop. Having read your post, I'll double check the source of the problem, though. ____________________ Dave S. s/v Clio 1987 S2 27, hull #80 --- In s227classassociation@..., Mark Swart wrote: > > They are the same, I had a friend give me a set from his 7.9. Re: Bimini top purchased/mounted - pics posted
Thanks for the photos, Mark.
I just bit the bullet and bought a Taylormade model (from WM for too much $ apparently.) I'm mounting it similarly to yours but the 72" length has the front tubes crowding the winch handle. I may need to make it adjustable with a sliding collar on the tubes. Or try for a shorter one. My mate has been to the dermatologist too many times for me to postpone getting the bimini another year. The warm spring has us in the water on the Chesapeake earlier than ever! Thanks, Bob |

I ended up with going with a 78 inch wide, 54 inch length generic I found on ebay for $130. It is white vinyl, which I am actually a fan of. This one has an aluminum frame, which I like because it is lighter. I only use them in the summer, the rest of the year I take them off or fold them back, and I'll fold it back when I race. Mounting went fine, it is mounted to the deck on the outside of the coaming (I didn't want to mount to the coaming because I was afraid it might interfere with line handling. Headroom underneath is decent, I have to stoop a little but it certainly isn't bad. PLENTY of room under the boom. We had our first big rain this weekend and it didn't develop any water pockets, so it seems good to go. Photos posted in my album on in the photo section. -Mark PS - Hope everyone's spring is going well and you are getting time on the water! I'm having a lot of fun -- I'm 2 for 2 in my spring series -- the folding prop made it feel like a different boat. The 6 second/mile I was getting for the three blade in NO way made up for the loss of speed! --- In s227classassociation@..., "MarkS" <mark_swart@...> wrote:

Re: Considering an S-2 27
Welcome to the group. Only 85 27's were produced although about 4 or so were listed on Yachtworld about 4 years ago... There used to be 2 in your general area...one in Virginia, the other in TN.

forgot to mention, i also torque them in a sequence...eg, 1,7,2,6 etc...had read somewhere that you should do in this manner...like a wheel or cylinder head....

Considering an S-2 27
jr_cann
I am considering the purchase of a new (to me) boat as a retirement "toy". I have previously owned a 9.2A and a 7.9 Grand Slam. I have lived-aboard a number of other sailboats for over 25 years and cruised extensively. I have a short list of several high quality boats to consider.
I would seriously consider a reasonably priced 27. I would prefer that it be the original "A" interior (pre-'86) and also with a 2GM engine, but neither would be a "kill the deal" issue. I am located in the Chesapeake and have no problem with an on-the-water delivery from anywhere on the east Coast. The expense of trucking would have to be taken into account for boats located elsewhere. If you have one or know of someone that may be willing to sell. please contact me. |
Re: Propellers for Yanmar 1GM10

I was out yesterday and did a full throttle run -- it revved to 3600 with no issues and GPS was showing between 6 and 6.5 (my onboard knotmeter doesn't work). No smoking problems. I think the 12 X 9 is fine, I don't know what the 13 X 9 advantage would be, unless it provided a little more thrust in reverse.
