Locked Replacement Rear Shocks 5
Stock 75 R90S SS. Looks like I am going to need a pair of shocks. Friends have suggested YSS, Hagon, Ikon. This is a nice daily rider, close but not a show bike. Would like good performance and possibly the option to install the stock shock cover to present the illusion of stock. I find multiple options in those brands online. Wanting some specific suggestions/model numbers based on experience. THANKS!!!!!!

Locked 74 R90S Instruments without White Outer Rings 10 #'squestion
I'm looking at a 74 with under 30,000 Miles and I'm trying to confirm the mileage is correct. The first thing that jumped out was there are no white rings around either the speedo or tach. In Ian Falloon's book - BMW R90S, it says for 74 the speedo and tach featured a white outer ring. The tick marks on the speedo are the fat ones but I can't see the "W" ratio number clearly in the photos. I'm planning to see the bike today so I'll have that later. Based on on Ian's book the VIN makes it an 06/74 build (US), which is the second to last month of US bikes. My question is could this be legit, or did all the 74s have the white rings. The documentation for the bike only goes back to 2005 so I can't confirm the progression of mileage prior to that. Also, I was told the bikini fairing was replaced at some point. Again, I can't tell from the pictures if it's the 74 type with the mystery holes or a newer one, but I'll check today when I see it in person. Thanks, Scott.

Locked Refurbishing a Gas Cap
See below. I hope the pics will come through. Mac Kirkpatrick Glenmoore, PA "After all, what is adventure, but inconvenience, properly regarded?" C. Donahue ---------- Forwarded message --------- Date: Sat, Jul 25, 2020 at 11:35 AM Subject: Re: This'll keep the gas in the tank ! "Is that really the same gas cap !???" Yes, it is the same gas cap as pictured, "in the rough". I overhauled the cap by drilling out the rivet holding the gasket ring; removed the components; media blasted the underside. The topside was sanded with automotive grade refinishing sand papers, starting with 220 grit; proceeding to 320, P500 and, finishing with P1000 grit. On to the buffer, using a concentric sewn, cotton flannel buff and, green then white compounds, to raise the shine and, bring out the color... The upper surface in the picture is the initial polishing of P500 finish (lower surface) to see how the alloy is cleaning up, before continuing on with P1000. That completed, installed these new components... 16 11 1 230 603, gasket 07 11 9 904 207, washer 07 11 9 944 651, nail

Locked 1974 Repro Handlebar Switches Now Available
Replacement /5 handlebar switches are now available, which means if you own a '74 R90S, R90/6, etc., your bike has the /5 switches and you will want to know the following since the '74 bikes have different wiring, they have a 5 position ignition switch versus '75 on 3 position ignition switches, etc. This from Vech @ Bench Mark Works http://www.benchmarkworks.com I was the one that first contacted the manufacturer, and sent samples of the original switches, and I insisted that the manufacturer modify them with screw terminals on the back of the switch (rather than hard soldered harnesses) so the harnesses can be replaced as they fall apart in the sun. This was my idea, but I do not have an exclusive contract, so others now offer the switches. However, the people I contacted to make the switches, insisted on providing harnesses with each switch. There is a problem with that. I argued against it, but they would not listen. The problem is, 1974 only /6 uses a different harness and has flag terminals on the end that goes in the H/L bucket. The /5 version had simple tinned ends on the wires, to connect with the terminal board and flasher socket. Plus, the LHS /6 has extra wires for the clutch interlock feature that the /5 version does not. And, the 1974 only R90s had an identical harness, but of different length. That is why I sell the same switches, without harnesses, and I offer the harnesses separate. The Harnesses for the /5 are: 61 31 1 351 219H--$35.50--RHS indicator switch harness /5 61 31 1 351 220H--$35.50--LHS indicator switch harness /5 But the harnesses for the 1974 /6 bikes are: 61 31 1 357 521H--$35.00--RHS indicator switch harness /6 1974 only 61 31 1 357 521HS--$35.00--RHS indicator switch harness R90S 1974 only 61 31 1 357 523H--$35.00--LHS switch harness /6 1974 only 61 31 1 357 523HS--$35.00--LHS switch harness R90S 1974 only And the original headlight bucket grommet that was originally made up on the harness of /6 switches, was not removable (due to the combination of flag terminals and the fact that the wires were hard soldered into the original switches). that grommet was not available separately, back in the day. I have a substitute that fits and works. And it is possible to install it because the end of the harness at the switch is not hard soldered to the switch. 61 31 1 357 521G--$1.00--Grommet for /6 bucket 1974 harness Mac Kirkpatrick Glenmoore, PA "After all, what is adventure, but inconvenience, properly regarded?" Locked Now For The Truth: New Reproduction BMW /5 Handlebar Switches Now Available.
Would someone please pass Vech's information, below to the /5 list so they know the true story and don't order the wrong parts? If you want the correct repro handlebar switches for your bike, see Vech's complete statement below. *** How about NOT posting purposely misleading and incorrect information to the airhead list? The most made-up/implied portion of the story from yesterday is as follows; the email from yesterday had additional incomplete information that was posted above this statement: "These /5 switches are now available from The Beemer Shop and it's many dealers including Motorrad Elektrik, Euro Moto Electrics, Bob¡¯s BMW plus others. The Beemer Shop welcomes dealer inquiries." The above is BS, many others sell these parts, The Beemer Shop does not control the supply of these parts as is explicitly implied by the sender. IMO this reflects badly on Ted's shop and he does not deserve that. Following is the true, complete story from Vech at Bench Mark Works, read it if you have the models Vech references or you could buy the wrong parts for your bike and who needs to go through that? **** From Vech: These are the same switches that I am selling. Locked unused 12V tap on main circuit board? 2 #'squestion
I've been experimenting with using a cast-off android cellphone with no internet connection as a navigation device. I've been using the OSMand software and downloaded via my home network the four local states I'm liable to be riding in the near future. It works surprising well. I see some small 12V to 5V transformers on Amazon. I was wondering if I hit the "RESV" terminals and one of the Brown terminals on the circuit board, and drilled and grommetted a small hole in the headlight shell to pass a wire thru to charge my cellphone. Have any of you done something similar or see a downside to this scheme?

Locked Installing S Windshield With Stock Plastic Pop Rivets? 15
Helpful idea: When installing the plastic pop rivet-like fasteners that hold on the S fairing such as on an R90S, if you freeze the rivets overnight, they become stiff enough so if installed quickly, they pop right in. Locked Speed/tach repair 5
Hey group, I wanted to share this information with you all. The odometer on my ¡° 75 S ¡° stopped turning recently. (59.588 miles) Tachometer needle had been getting a bit jumpy too. These gauges had never been serviced. I took them to Speedometer Service Company, www.speedometersolutions.com in Milwaukee, phone 414-463-6660 ( 6.5 mi. From my home.) This is the ¡°old school¡± type of shop that we all miss so much. Mom and Pop shop. Roger, the owner is third generation. Family owned and operated since 1932. A true time capsule. I dropped the gauges off at 10:00 a.m Tuesday morning. I got a call back from Roger, the next day at 11:00 a.m. Gauges are done and ready to go. I couldn¡¯t believe the short turn around time. The speedometer, odometer and tach have never been as smooth. Like brand new. While he was at it he calibrated the speedometer. Said it was reading 8-10 miles per hour Fast. I knew these speedo¡¯s had that tendency but not that much. Friend of mine is a retired director of R&D for Harley Davidson and he told me Harley used this company for issues that would come up from time to time. I strongly recommend this company. Roger knows his stuff and is fair priced. $270 for the service. Hope this helps someone. Happy Trails. Gayle Murphy In sunny Milwaukee, by the big pond.

Locked question regarding boring out 97mm cylinder to fit 1000cc piston 14 #'squestion
hello, i have a 75 r90s that needs top end work, my local bmw mechanic is recommending boring out the cylinder to fit a 1000cc piston to increase performance. since this is the 75 year model with 97mm and not the fatter 99mm i am hesitant as i have not found anything online documenting a bore out of the smaller cylinders. Just looking for some guidance, thank you in advance.

Locked Recoating Cylinders With Nikasil
More re new cylinders: One option to achieve Nikasil/nickel silicon carbide cylinders if your pistons are good, is to send the pistons and cylinders to PowerSeal USA http://www.powersealusa.com where they will bore out the cylinders, coat them with Nikasil, then re-bore them to fit your pistons. Their website is an informative read. And this process is most often less expensive than purchasing new parts.
