Locked Oil Pan Leakage

开云体育

Hi Guys

?

My “S” is again having some leakage at the left side of the oil pan gasket/seem.? When I bought the bike a few years back, it had leakage.? I removed the pan and cleaned the mating surfaces and installed a new OEM gasket and torqued per specs.? Was good, but is now seeping again.? Tried a little more torque on the bolts, but no improvement.

?

Any thoughts?? Should I replace the gasket again with BMW OEM…or has anyone had better success with other materials?

?

This article doesn’t recommend silicone.

?

Thanks

Bob

?

PS – I may try hint #6A in the suspect locations first.

HINT #6A:? There have been instances of annoying leaks from the pan bolt located below the oil canister area.? Use?NON-hardening version of Permatex Form-A-Gasket on that bolt's threads and on the bolt washer.

Locked Aluminum intake spigots

Isn’t spigot an unusual word? ?It just seemed correct. So, to the question. I think this has been asked a long time ago, but I can’t seem to find the answer. ?I purchased a while ago a set of aluminum intake tracts (spigots). They are machined beautifully and seem to have a Venturi machined on the inside. I believe these were offered from a club member. ?Are these just bling or do they actually help the gas/air mixture? ?Do we have a tried and true method for removing the old steel intakes (spigots)? ?I’m assuming heat and maybe a band wrench of some type? ?Suggestions, please. Thanks, Scott

Locked Re: Shift shaft seal replacement

Lean to right works well and is "most easiest". Put down a piece of carpet, etc., to protect the valve cover. Depending on how long it is on its side and the condition of the engine, it might make sense to then remove the pluggies so you can spin the engine over and expel?excess oil that might have drained into the right cylinder. Avoids hydrolock.

Locked Re: Fuel pipes

As Nick stated, the short tube is for the reserve. Set the handle to reserve and blow through it. Which ever hole the air comes out of is where you need to insert the short pipe as that is your reserve.

The long one is for normal use.?

The short one should be fitted to the orifice that corresponds with the tap when it's in the reserve position.?

Kind regards?

My ‘76 is missing the fuel tap plastic straws that control reserve fuel volume. Replacements ordered. Long and short straws - which one goes fore and which aft on top of the fuel taps?

Doesn't make a difference,? its the length of the straws that dictate the fuel range

To clarify, I was talking about the front brake switch for a ‘74. It is a mechanical switch, same as the /5. Hydraulic switches like the?ECHLIN 143 started in ‘75. I already received the new switch from Vech. I’ve squirted a little DeoxIT shield down the piston. Hopefully some got to the contacts and will help make it last longer.

The 1974 R60/6 has mechanical brake switches. Both front and rear similar to the /5 series. The NAPA/Echlin switch is for a hydraulic switch similar to the R75'6, R90/6 & R90/S models. Below are pictures of the R60/6 switches.

Locked Re: 1974 R90S Front Brake Switch

The switch is commonly available at NAPA for about $13.00 or less It is made by Echelin and is also for a VW Beetle and also fits the 1961-1968 Jaguar E-Type. Just take the switch to NAPA and they can find one.
$60.00 for that is highway robbery.

Locked Re: R90S Martek Electronic ignition question

Does anyone have this system on their R90S?? Looking for some wiring advice. Thanks

Locked Re: Running light turn signals

I ended up converting the front lights by using Snowbum’s instructions. It was not too difficult.

On the back I added a set of hyperlites, brake + running, on their license plate bracket. I wired them to the tail light instead of running a switched power wire back to the rear. This was very easy; although the lights have to be turned on before the hyper lite brake light will work. Not a problem if you run with lights on all the time. Very bright and better than just converting the rear turn signals, although less original looking.

Locked 1974 R90S Front Brake Switch

I replaced the brake and clutch switches on my ‘74 when I restored it about 10 years ago and it recently stopped working. It started working intermittently after removing it and playing with it for awhile. I?bought a new one because I thought the old one might not be reliable now.

This seems like a short life. Is there anything I can do to extend the life on the new switch or revive the old one. I was thinking maybe squirting some DeoxIT Shield down the plunger or something like that. These are quite expensive now, $60 compared to $22 10 years ago.

Locked R90S Racing + Much More/VBMWMO

Hi guys, if you want to see information?about BMW vintage racing, you can read what Udo Geitl's son Eric has to say. Udo was the racing manager at Butler & Smith and was responsible for the first Superbike win in 1976 with Reg Pridmore, etc. So this is real inside information.

Go to Vintage BMW Motorcycle Owners

Click on Forums, then BMW in Racing.

More
If you want to see a lot of literature about the R90S for instance, go to

and click on Knowledge Base, then Library, then Select Model "R90S" on the left and Voila! all manner of reference materials shows up, repair manual, owner's manual, etc.

If you choose R100/7 you will see lots as well, including the /7 Repair Manual in English, German, etc.?

There is an R90S specific section as well, under Forums.

There is also a For Sale section under Forums, but this is for Members only so spammers can't get to it. With membership you get so much more.

Snowbum's extremely?insightful and valuable site is also available here, click Library and Snowbum's?Encyclopedia; Bob's site is fully supported by the Vintage?BMW Motorcycle Owners, in perpetuity. It has TONS of great information in it.

The VBMWMO site gets over 10,000 clicks per month from all over the world.

Enjoy!!

+1 on Motobatt, slightly more $$ than other batteries, but I believe
they're worth it. Tom Cutter sells them, which is a pretty good
recommendation. You can buy them direct from Motobatt, but I like to
support Tom when I can.

I was introduced to Motobatt and both my R90S and R26 use them. Excellent, never go back to anything else.

Look à the Motobatt (glass Matt) option, in black. Slightly taller that OEM, but if you flip over the clamping strap it works fine

I found an exact replacement at my local Sam's Club: Duracell Platinum AGM ETX30LA, even listed for R90S. $120.

Both of these batteries are about 3/4 inch narrower than the stock battery; any maybe a little taller; but stock strap can be used. Most importantly, it can be installed/removed from the top if you hold your mouth just right.

It is white.

Anyway, hope this will help someone....
