WAT-3500

Correction - I just checked my email and I misremembered the date.? The date that was given to me for expected availability of the 3500 is September/October, not December.? ?Sorry for the confusion.? So it's possible they will be available soon.

Re: Moving OW to another computer

Hristo,

I successfully moved my OW installation to a new laptop. It wasn't too painful.
I first logged into my account
The registry hack worked.
To enable "Personal Predictions", I had to create the "Personal" folder and copy the most recent personal file.
I haven't tried all the features I used on the previous installation, but so far, so good.

Re: Old event not showing up.

Then the explanation is probably that it is not included by the filters. You can obtain specialized logs following this: to be able to tell more.

However first check that you can see other events that are more than 24 days old as the cut off could be also 2 weeks. I don't remember and dont have the source code with me right now to check.

Re: Old event not showing up.

Hi Vince,

OW Desktop keeps events for up to 30 or 60 days in the past, forgot exactly how long. You will not be able to find the event in OW Dekstop if it is too old.

I should probably build something on OWC that can allow observers to submit reports and update them. This is not currently available.

Have a look at to provide additional information.

Start from point 2, if no errors then do the DebugView log and send it to me directly.

Re: Occultation event from OccultWatcher to SharpCap and more ...

Hello occultation observers,

I have now a new version of my script.

What can you do with my script ?
- From OccultWatcher for a future event ... export a file with all the information of the event
- In SharpCap ... import the file with the information and you can do the following things
- GOTO to the star coordinates
- Plate Solve and centre to the star coordinates
- With the QHY-174GPS camera: perform the LED calibration
- Prefill the weather condition in the SODIS template
- Start a test capture (for checking if the images transfer is stable)
- Start the countdown and start automatically the capture of the film at a predefined time before the expected event time

The ZIP file contains a PDF with a lot of explanation ... please read it before doing something with the script (really, read it).

If at the beginning you do not want use the automatic start of the film ... it is OK.
You can use the script for the preparation (GOTO, Plate Solve, LED calibration). The film capture can be done manually.

But before using my script with a real occultation ... please use it with several test events.
You can do the following, for a future event (some days before the event), you can use the file after changing the date (and or time) from the tags
#StarRA, #StarDEC, #PredictTime, #EventDate, #EventTime (scroll down to the end of the file).
Yes, if the future event is at 3 O'clock in the morning ... you can change the time for 22 O'clock.

Re: Graphic view of the event in OW

Hello Hristo,

Yes, you are right ... in the last months it was less than 1 report per month :-)
But ... I start to have more automation ... so, why to stop before the "finish line" ?

Yesterday, I uploaded the report of my observation of Backlunda in SODIS.
It was necessary to upload 3 times while it was not the correct format for the D: and R: times. (D and R were missing for the time ... and without " ").

One of the first reason was to reduce as much as possible any typo error during the preparation or the report of the observation.
For the preparation ... I have now a good "result". No typing is needed from OccultWatcher to the observation with SharpCap.
If the mount has an acceptable polar alignment, then no need of a planetarium ... SharpCap with a Plate-Solve software are sufficient for finding the target star with a GOTO telescope.

In the past I noted the event time, the asteroid and the star name and sometimes the coordinates on a small paper and then I tried to find the star with the telescope outside with the Planetarium in Prism software.
If it was a UCAC star, then it was necessary to search a different name while I never achieved to find an UCAC in Prism software. Or to write the coordinates and do a GOTO to these coordinates.

Now with my script ... generate the event file with OccultWatcher in advance and open it in SharpCap before the observation ... and then make a GOTO and a Plate-Solve ... done!

For the instrumental delay ... OK, each observer has to know the delay of the setup. I use a QHY-174GPS camera ... so, I have not too much to take in account.

For additional token ... OK, forget the station coordinates, but please think about to add the asteroid magnitude.
Today I calculate the asteroid magnitude back from the star and magnitude drop. That is not ideal when the magnitude drop is very small.

Regards,
Jean-Francois

Re: Graphic view of the event in OW

I don't know how many positive reports you submit per week to talk about automation here, but I feel that pre-populating of event times from AOTA falls in the same category as pre-populating observing site coordinates. i.e. this is something that the user should enter manually and ensure the data that is entered correctly when this is done, paying attention to all things such as whether the correct instrumental delays have been applied for example.

Hello Peter and Hristo,

Thanks ... now after thinking, I found it and use it ... but forget that it was possible.
It is necessary to convert the "single" line in several columns, and then to convert the value " 34?¡ã @198?¡ã" in something link that in 2 columns "34¡ã" and "198¡ã".
So ... it is not really simple.
Does somebody know where the "?" character comes from ? And how to disable it ?

Hristo, for the station coordinates ...
The idea was that OccultWatcher fill it (like the other information) during the generation of the report.
A simple alternative is to prepare several SODIS templates (with different stations if necessary).

Other alternative ... for my SharpCap script ... today I copy the information of my EAGLE. But I can modify it, so that the GPS coordinates of the QHY-174GPS camera are save too (if available).
Not necessary in the SODIS "#Latitude: " and "#Longitude: ", but it could be in the Note lines (not "#Comments: ").
Like the GPS log file ... I plane to save it with the other files (in case the timing is not stable).

Concerning the report generation in OccultWatcher ... the AOTO software produces a report.
It seems that the report is needed or used by OccultWatcher reporting ... but I do not see the results in the report.
So it is still necessary to fill it manually (with potential of errors ... forget the D or R before the time).

Is it possible to automate this a little bit more ? ... to have some additional token, so that the AOTA report results can be insert automatically in the SODIS report ?
One point more for the AOTA report ... it calculates al lot of thing ... but why it is still necessary to calculate manually the occultation duration ?

Jean-Francois

Re: Graphic view of the event in OW

Hi?Jean-Fran?ois,

I tried to export all the event in Excel format ... but the important information is missing ... no star azimuth or elevation are exported from OccultWatcher to Excel.
Are you talking about the "Export All Events to Excel" feature in the right-click menu?
This only exports the columns which are displayed.
You need to make sure you have "Star Altitude" selected in the "Choose Columns" setting (see attached image).
When this is selected, the column will be displayed and also exported to Excel (actually CSV) format.
Also note that the "Star Altitude" column contains both Altitude and Azimuth.

Peter Nosworthy

Re: Graphic view of the event in OW

Yes, each menu item will be a separate 'action' from the same add-in. Add-ins can register multiple actions.

> - token for the asteroid magnitude

I will look at this.

> - star elevation and azimuth in the Excel export

Excel report is not managed by me. You need to contact your reginal coordinator for any changes to the Excel template.

> - one more ... token from the station coordinates

Where do you want to use that?

Hristo.

Wish you beso of luck with Backlunda event!.

Re: Graphic view of the event in OW

Hi Jean-Fran?ois,

I support your idea of doing something visual to show the position of the star on the sky along with the user horizon. May be you can consider the following design:

- A single form shows the user horizon as defined in OW and plots the location of the currently selected event in OW - just plotting a single event at a time
- Once opened the form can remain open until the user closes it. While the form is open as the user selects a different event in OW, the form plots the position of this event location on the user horizon
- You can achieve the above with the current SDK
- You can register an OWAddinActionType.EventReceiver add-in action that processes a EVT_SELECTED_EVENT_CHANGED event to get notified when an new event has been selected by the user in OW. The passed astEvent in the ExecuteAction method can be cast to IOWLocalEventData interface and this will contain the altitude and azimuth of the star. If the form is already open then you plot the position of the newly selected event. IF the form is not open then you don't do anything
- You have another action that shows on a right click of an event in OW and when clicked by the user - it will open the form and plot the position.
- You will need to manually read the UserHorizon.txt file to get the configured horizon and plot it

Let me know what further guidance you need on the above and I'll be happy to guide you.

Hristo.

Hello Hristo and Jan,

I use already OccultWatcher with my local horizon file. It is working and I can see the horizon image and/or red numbers.
But ... I have no idea if it is only a little or completely covered by my horizon.
The image I uploaded is the event from my home station with my (real) horizon and that is the next events during June.
Two events are very close to the horizon line ... so I could install my second mount on the terrace corner (my main instrument with mount is in the center of the terrace).

Hristo, you wrote ... "There is also a way to get all 'My Events' from an Add-in from the IOWHost2 interface. In your add-in code in the InitializeAddin() method am IOWHost is passed in.
You can cast this to an IOWHost2 and then latest call the GetMyEvents() method. Let me know if you need more info on that."
... What ? You know, it toke me several weeks for modifying your script for writing my Add-in. A little help from you will be necessary :-)

It was not my plan to list every possible events in one graphic.
The idea is to show all the listed events in OccultWatcher (not only "My Events") after the filtering ... for example it would be for me now around 20 (some events are listed in several Tags).
The graphic should be interactive ... mean when the mouse move above the dot, some information is shown ... at least the asteroid name and the date.

Concerning extending the SDK ... yes, you can add some token ... for example the asteroid magnitude.
Or you can add more information for the Excel export (the star elevation and azimuth were not exported).

Regards,
Jean-Fran?ois

Re: Spreadsheet file location

Hi Vince,

The reporting add-in contains all templates for reporting. Which form to use is determined by the region you have selected. The report template is extracted from the add-in binary just before the report is prefilled and the template not available anywhere on your computer.

The file you see is not used by OW Reporting add-in. If the file needs to be updated this requires a new version of the Reporting add-in to be released.
