Re: Arizona
It is!? And if you go a bit north of the Transcon in New Mexico, you hit Durango and Silverton and Cumbres and Toltec, both of which are well worth riding and photographing. Mike Tisdale

Re: GP9 Friday, 1983
Yeah, the GP9s were regulars on the commutes from the 1950s into the 1980s.? They replaced steam and ran on the commutes until Caltrain took over from SP in 1985.?? EMD intended the GP series to be used for everything and railroads did.? Norfolk and Western and Grand Trunk Western dieselized late and used GP9s as their regular passenger power on intercity trains.? SP was not the only railroad to use them on commuter service.? ? [Edited Message Follows] It's hard for me to picture GP9s doing commuter stuff, but I'm glad you mentioned it.?Andy |
Re: Arizona
Thanks Andy.? I hope you can make it there.? The Transcon goes through some remarkable countryside and is a busy piece of railroad, with plenty of trains to watch.? When you get tired of trains, if that's possible, you can visit everything from Hoover Dam to the Grand Canyon to "Standin' on the Corner", with the Painted Desert and Teepee Motel thrown in for good measure. Thanks Mike,? Your personal history and comments on the photography really bring everything to life here.? I'd love to visit that part of the country (and not just for the trains :)? ?but I have not yet been able to.? Andy Smith |
Arizona
One of railfanning's iconic spots is West Winslow, Arizona with the San Francisco mountains in the background. I've stood on this overpass in ATSF days, when I was there with British friends in 1983, but I think David Carballido-Jeans' use of a strong telephoto lens to bring the mountains closer really nails this location. United Kingdom
The United Kingdom is where railroading began and over five decades after steam in regular service finished on British Railways, the UK still has a good variety of heritage lines, in addition to an extensive network of electric and diesel passenger and freight trains in regular service. We'll let a recent photo of preserved steam represent the UK today, a double headed training run on the Paignton And Dartmouth Railway with a former US Army 2-8-0 and a BR Standard 4-6-0. Robert Sherwood was there to capture the action. Mike Tisdale |
Ukraine
Today's country is Ukraine, which has a good representation on Railpictures, showing quite the variety of trains and scenery. I went for AgentF's photo of a high speed EMU set with a couple of massive smoke stacks for a backdrop. More information about Ukraine's railways and tram lines at , which has a photo of the Kyiv childen's railway decorated for the holidays. Mike Tisdale |
