Re: GP9 Friday, 1983
SP bought 3 GP40P-2s to replace the last of the F-Ms on the commutes.? They worked with the GP9s and SDP45s until Caltrain got their own equipment in 1985.? Often a mid day train with 2 or 3 cars would have 1 GP9, while rush hour trains would have 2.?? Mike Tisdale

I know I'm grave digging a bit here but I found it fitting that the day after this was posted I saw a SP GP on a commuter train on a twitter account I follow, ment this whole time to bring it up. It wasn't a 9 but close enough I could picture a 9 doing so.? Andy Smith |
Re: Florida
In less than a week I'll be in Florida for the first time. Visiting my wife's old stomping grounds which are along the FEC lines. I've already reseached them of course, and got ATCS up and running for the route :)?
Should be cool as it's my first ever plane trip that won't involve work and work stress.? I did the FEC scheme, the KCS though I prefer the drab gray of my childhood, watching them sprinkled in with BN green.? |
Re: Florida
FEC was blue for a long time.? This was July 1988,? Port Orange, Florida KCS has red and yellow, but has a lot more black.? Last month at Yuba Pass, California on Union Pacific. Both FEC and KCS are using earlier paint schemes on their newer diesels.? Nice to see. Mike Tisdale

When I was there a long time ago FEC livery was black I seem to remember. This livery looks a bit like Kansas City Southern

Florida
What can be more Florida than the Florida East Coast, especially since they have revived the red/yellow paint scheme that was used for the first 20 years of so of dieselization. Here 817 and another GEVO lead a northbound train in Port Orange, Florida on 9 November 2015. One of my wife's sisters lived a couple blocks from the FEC in Port Orange and took a couple of walks to the track when we visited. Mike Tisdale |
District of Columbia
The District of Columbia has a good bit of railroading compressed into its few square miles.? In addition to Amtrak and freight traffic it has the Washington Metro.? Here is a Metro train at Metro Center station, where Anne and I changed trains to get from Union Station to the Smithsonian on 11-11-2015, the last time we were there.?? Mike Tisdale |
California
In going through the countries of the world and states of the US, we've hit California and I think I can find a photo of my own to represent my home state. One of my all time favorite photos that I've taken is this shot of 4449 leading the American Freedom Train at Dunsmuir, California in November 1975. This is a scan of a print and eventually, I will scan the slide for a better digital image. Mike Tisdale |
Re: GP9 Friday, 1983
SP used GP9s and H-24-66es from the 1950s until the 1970s, when SDP45s replaced the FMs. 3 GP40P-2s replaced the last FMs around 1975. SD7s, SD9s and an FP7 also were used on the commutes.?

The Harriman and sub cars were supplemented with gallery cars built in the 1950s and 60s. The first gallery cars were pulled by steam.? Mike Tisdale

The "new" Caltrain equipment was put into service in 1985.
