Message And I would like to look over everybody's shoulder at some time to see how this satellite stuff works. My goals for Field Day include learning how to operate through the satellites(Elmer is Robin), learning how to pass messages on the ARRL circuit (Elmer is KF4JVD), and learning how PSK-31 works (Elmer is KN6RO). >> SAT station for Field Day.
FYI: I am still at zero with my SAT station to date...and withdraw all but "Moral Support"....in the setup of a first-class SAT station for Field Day. I'm sorry. My intentions were to accumulate and assemble my SAT station pieces and parts...up to the rotor controller/interface/radio (which I think Robin already has). I wanted to use Field Day as the impetus to get everything purchased, tested and working. But I have made zero progress to date. As background, when I heard Robin/Pieter had voluntered to do the FD SAT station, I thought it might be a good opportunity to get my own station going. Dunno what Robin's (and N4IP/Pieter's) original plan was -- maybe it's not too late to execute and complete that? Or, as a fallback position, we can come-up with a list of what is required, then see what we can all pull together (minimal gear required) to work the SATs for FD? BTW: we should run the pass prediction program (maybe Robin already has) and see what the passes are predicted to be for Field Day? 73 de JG ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robin Cutshaw" <aa4rc@...> To: <n4n_field_day@...> Sent: Wednesday, June 18, 2003 4:10 PM Subject: RE: [n4n_field_day] Time for a head count > I'll be there. Still looking for a few items 3
Dave. I will plan on bringing the following on Saturday morning: 1. One banquet table 2. A few chairs 3. "Erection kit" (home made wire antenna putter upperer) 4. Laptop computer with either 100BASET or 802.11b connectivity. I also have some dry chemical fire extinquishers. Not sure if that's the same as CO2? Finally, I have a pickup truck. If it can be helpful to bring stuff to the site on Saturday morning, just let me know. -Tim _____________ --- "Moss, Dave J (INPO)" <mossdj@...> wrote: __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? A brief comment on fire extinguishers...
Regardig the fire extinguishers... >> "Dry Chemical", AKA "PKP" (Purple K Powder) is for Class A, B fires ("leaves and ash", and "burning liquids"). >> CO2 is compressed Carbon Dioxide gas and leaves the characteristic "frost" when deployed. A good CO2 extinguisher will work on A, B and Class C ("elecrical") fires. PKP and CO2 extinguishers put out the fire the same way, by "smothering" or removing the Oxygen. The difference is that PKP is reasonably corrosive -- especially when wet and in contact with electrical/electronic equipment. We could actually make use of both kinds for FD -- the CO2 for any radio gear/power supply-related issues and the PKP for any (higher probability) generator/automobile-related fires. As Hams, I think we could handle the relatively rare electrical fire easily -- turn off the power, etc. But the "burning liquid" gasoline, etc fire can get out of control very F-A-S-T. So, if we only have one, let's go with the PKP...near the generators, etc! 73 de JG Think FD! -------Original Message------- From: Tim Lemmon <tim_lemmon@...> Sent: 06/18/03 10:53 PM To: n4n_field_day@... 440 Yagi for FD SAT station... 3
Jeff - Is it circularly polarized...or a long-boom 440 Yagi? FYI: Here's the kind of SAT antenna array I believe Robin, AA4RC is trying to duplicate (would like to have) for FD: http://ke4eni.hamlabs.com/ke4eni/AA4RC%20SAT%20Array%20Pics/AA4RC%20SAT%20Ar ray.JPG My understanding is Robin's SAT array consists of: - VHF: M2 circularly polarized 2M long-boom Yagi - UHF: M2 curcularly polarized 440 long-boom Yagi - 2.4 GHz: BBQ dish + very low noise 2.4 GHz downconverter (TranSystem, Inc.) - rotor: Yaesu G-5500 Az/El with fiberglass boom - rotor interface: SASI tracker - tracking program: NOVA for Window/SASI tracker - low-loss feedline - Military surplus "crank up" and rotatable mast - Rig: Kenwood TS-200X (Robin, did I get it all right?) BTW: Here is a picture of Robin, AA4RC "working the birds": http://ke4eni.hamlabs.com/ke4eni/AA4RC%20SAT%20Array%20Pics/AA4RC%20SAT%20Op %20Position.JPG 73 de JG ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jeff Pahl / KF4JVD" <jpahl@...> To: <n4n_field_day@...>; <n4n_field_day@...> Sent: Wednesday, June 18, 2003 9:55 PM Subject: Re: RE: [n4n_field_day] FD Elmering opportunities > I have a 70 cm antenna, think it is a KLM, if need be > > -Jeff <all the rest deleted...>

Regarding WLAN 7
I will bring 802.11b APs and Gain antennas. We will set up on the same subnet as the wired nework. SSID will set to N4N and we will not run security for this event. Channel will set away from the SAT freq to avoid interference. Any software that scans channels should not be used (ie NetStumber) as it could interfer with the SAT station. This should make it easy for and WIFI compatible 802.11b device to join the network. Dave - KD4SHH

CW Setup 18
Tom, Could you bring the operators manual for the CW station to the Saturday work party? I need to check the "ports" and "jacks" for hooking in the Writelog keyer, paddle, and possibly an external keyer if needed. Also will there be 12V, low current, (Anderson Connector) at the CW operating position? It may be needed to power the keyer. I am aware that the rig probably has an internal keyer. But, depending on the jack(s) for straight key and/or paddle, we may need to run straight key for the Writelog program, and put a keyer on in a "Y". The paddles would plug into the external keyer in this case. Details needed... Thanks Mike, NE4S

GOTA and other odds and ends
If we can get our 400 with visitors that would be awesome. If not, I'm more than willing to get on and work up to my hundred. Other than that, for scheduling purposes, please put me down for either VHF or for 10m or 15m phone. And before I forget again, my heavy-duty #12 extension cord is 90', not 100', so if you are going to run a lighter cord during setup and then replace it, please be aware of that. Hard to stretch the cord later :) I have all the parts and info for the traffic passing, and will put the battery on the solar panel in the morning. It should be good and charged by next weekend. Sorry I can't make it this weekend for the tree cutting. Have a good time and be careful! 73, Jeff ------------------ Anyone have an extra heil headset? My two are already committed. cw operation 2
OK, I'm now testing WL ver 10J. Everything looks good. I have a couple questions. If I'm in running mode, I'll call cq with a message like "FD N4N" in memory "F2". I'll then copy the call sign, hit "+" on the numeric keypad to send my exchange. Next, I'll copy his exchange "5A NTX" using a space bar to tab field to field, then ENTER to commit to the log. I then have to hit "F3" to say "TU N4N FD". Is there a way to have the TU N4N FD message sent off the ENTER key when I commit to the log? What is the most efficient use of the message memories/keyboard? Roger are you setting up the message memories so they are identical on all CW stations? Also, how do you keep the bandmaps for VFOA and VFOB "on top". They keep hiding behind the main window. Jim WA2MBP

more cw stuff
After reading the manual on message orientation and ESM (Enter Sends Message) mode, I have one question. When I type a call sign into the "CALL" field, hit ENTER, the cursor stays on the CALL field. According to the manual it should advance to the "RCV" field for entry of the FD Class portion of the exchange. What am I doing wrong? I understand that it may be useful to edit the callsign, but this would be a special case and would only involve Backspacing to move from the "RCV" field back to the "CALL" field to correct and transmit the correction with another ENTER. Mike, NE4S, do you use the Enter Sends Message mode? Still can't get the bandmaps to show on top. Jim

Mike, I'm assuming you are planning to use the PC CW generation in WriteLog plus a paddle connected to the Built In CW Keyer in the ICOM 775, correct? I noticed there is only a KEY jack on the back of the ICOM 775. Does this mean a Y cable will be required to accept input from both the LPT port from the PC AND the paddle? Jim

Tent/trailer... 2
Message "Plan for the worst, hope for the best." I like your idea of going with the tent first. Give it a good test Thu/Fri. If it works, well, it works. The trailer can be a backup.... 73 de JG ----- Original Message ----- From: Moss, Dave J (INPO) To: n4n_field_day@... Sent: Tuesday, June 24, 2003 9:36 AM Subject: [n4n_field_day] FW: FD Hey gang, It's getting to be crunch time for making a decision on whether to use Phil's trailer (designed to be a big horse trailer) to contain 4 stations, or to use the tent I got at the 'big tool sale" in Decatur a month ago. We'll be using one or the other to contain the 40m phone, 10-80 digital, 10/80 phone, and GOTA stations. It (they) will need to be located at the far end of the field near the copse of trees that juts out into the field. Today's weather forecast is for sun Thursday, isolated thunderstorms on Friday, scattered thunderstorms on Saturday, and sunny on Sunday. Doesn't sound too bad, but if one of the "scattered" storms is a strong one, we'll have to be able to deal with it. It will be difficult at best, likely impossible, to move the stations from one shelter to the other in the middle of the contest and in the middle of a storm, so I think we should make a call and try to make that work, with some provisions for a back-up plan if appropriate. So, I'd like your opinion on which shelter we should use. My suggestion would be to set up the tent on Thursday and get some read on quality and how well we can guy it. If the tent looks good, we can plan to use it. If it looks questionable, we can call Phil and he can bring his trailer Thursday or Friday evening. That could save Phil a bunch of work if he doesn't have to make a separate trip out to the site to drop off and later pick up the trailer (he's planning to be out Saturday only). Sound reasonable? Other options would be to go with the trailer and forget the tent, or maybe to have both and choose the best bet as late as possible when the weather is more certain. I'd especially like to hear from WB8VTK and KN6RO (owners of two of the stations) and N4NBL (owner and shuttler of the trailer). We'll discuss and make a decision tonight on 147.105. Advantages/Disadvantages of the trailer: + Much ore durable and weather-tight than the tent + Has some air conditioning capability (will need a fan to push air from front compartment to the back) + Has an awning that could be used for one of the stations (weather-permitting) - Will require another generator running essentially full-time for the air conditioning - May be noisy with four stations calling in a fairly small box (had some problems with this in the past) - Will be a tight squeeze with four stations inside--OK to operate, but tough to move around. - Not real conducive to GOTA operation with inexperienced op and a "coach/mentor" (lot of conversations going on) - Phil has to make two extra trips to the site. Advantages/Disadvantages of the Tent + Has roll-up sides so can adjust for warm/rainy weather + Larger size than trailer (10x20) + Less distracting cross-talk (especially with the sides rolled up - Tent is of unknown quality--never out of the box - In severe weather, especially wind, tent could be questionable - No air conditioning (have box fans) - Takes more time to set up - Will need to work around guy ropes -----Original Message----- From: Phil West [mailto:phil@...] Sent: Tuesday, June 24, 2003 8:03 AM To: Moss, Dave J (INPO) Subject: RE: FD Yes, Sat only. I am going to work on the trailer tonight (I am working to insulate the roof) and will wash the inside out. So far it looks like it may rain Saturday but it is predicted that it will let up by afternoon.. FYI. If we want to use the air, it will take a minimum of a 3000 watt generator to drive it. I do not own one that large yet. Will keep in touch. de N4NBL \At 05:55 PM 6/23/2003 -0400, you wrote: Are you planning to be out Saturday only? If the trailer is needed I can have it out Thurs eve or Fri eve. We should more about the weather by Tues or Web. At the moment it looks like a 30% chance of rain.. Will follow up in a day or so..
