FD plans
4
FD plans Eddie, Gary, and I will be gathering at my place Friday around 9:30am to begin setup for FD. If all goes well we should be finished by mid-afternoon and in good shape to copy the ARRL bulletins starting at 6pm (CW). Radio/computer setup should be plug and play (thanks to Eddie¡¯s good work last Saturday), but we¡¯ll need to get Larry¡¯s computer and laptop set up as well. I¡¯ll be raising the wire antennas Friday morning¡ªdipoles for 80/15/20 and loops for 10 and 40. At some point mid-day Friday we¡¯ll head out for a bite to eat¡ªlocation TBD. If we have time we can run out somewhere for dinner Friday, or maybe order pizza. We can fine tune the Saturday schedule Friday afternoon, but plan on 10:00am start, lunch around noon, and begin operating at 2:00pm. Here¡¯s what I have planned for meals: Lunch Saturday (noon): sub sandwiches, veggies, chips Dinner Saturday (~6pm): steak, baked potato, broccoli, peas, salad and special desert thanks to Heather. Sunday breakfast(time TBD): bacon, eggs, sausage biscuits Sunday lunch (2pm): Philly cheese steak, corn on the cob, chips At the end of operation at 2pm Sunday we¡¯ll break for lunch, and then tear things down. Tear-down is basically packing everything you brought into your car. The antennas can stay up and I¡¯ll take care of them later. If you plan on spending the night Saturday, let me know. I have plenty of room, and one air mattress for the first who requests. Others can bring a sleeping bag and an air mattress, or sleep on a sofa (or hammock if the weather is nice). If it gets warm we can take a dip in the pool. Plan to bring your bathing suit and a towel. Only restriction is no glass bottles in/near the pool. (Don¡¯t panic, I¡¯ll have cans of beer. ?) If others want to join in, that¡¯s fine. Just let me know if you plan to be here at meal time if you want to eat. Dave UW

Ready to Go
Ready to Go Ok, it¡¯s late and nobody will likely see this, but . . . Got a few things done today. Since setup can officially begin at 8pm (0000Z Friday), this evening I shot a couple of lines over the trees in the back yard to use for raising antennas. Still had some daylight, so I put up a 2m antenna we can use for FD (and maybe I¡¯ll leave it up afterwards). So I will be able to monitor the repeater (147.105) tomorrow. Still need to do a bit of work getting the 2m feedline ty-wrapped in place, but it got too dark too fast to finish that. Tried to get the Winlink message thing working, but I keep getting disconnected before messages are uploaded. Unless someone else has some ideas tomorrow, I¡¯m sort of done with that. Can¡¯t seem to figure it out. All seems ready to go for setup tomorrow. I think we¡¯ll be ready in plenty of time to copy bulletins tomorrow evening. Might even have some time to work on satellite setup and other fun things. Think FD! For the rest of y¡¯all not already in, come join us for a while if you can. What¡¯s not to like? Play radio, dip in the pool, good beer. Can¡¯t go wrong here. Dave UW

Head count for FD meals Here¡¯s who I think is in for meals FD weekend: Sat lunch: KE4UW, AE4TQ, WB4SQ, KE4QFB Sat dinner: KE4UW, AE4TQ (+XYL), KE4QFB Sun breakfast: ??? Sun lunch: KE4UW, AE4TQ, KE4QFB, WB4SQ Please let me know if you are listed and won¡¯t be there, or if you want to be included and AREN¡¯T on the list. Doing the grocery shopping tomorrow afternoon, so please let me know ASAP. Dave UW

FD is here!
7
FD is here! FD is finally here! It¡¯s a smaller affair this year¡ªeither 2A or 3A (we¡¯ll decide Saturday), with so far only three ops (AE4TQ and KE4UW on digital, WB4SQ on phone). I may try a bit of CW, only to gain bragging rights for being the top scoring CW op for the second time in N4N history (that is, when no other CW ops show up ? ). We should put together a respectable score, while enjoying good food and beverages and, if you can believe the weather-guessers, reasonably good weather for Saturday and Sunday. Friday might be a bit rainy for setup, but the out-in-the-rain setup is pretty minimal. So if you have a free day Saturday or Sunday, feel free to stop by. If you plan to come around meal time, let me know by Thursday. That¡¯s when I make the run to the grocery store to get enough food for those who said they would be there. Looks like Sunday might the first really hot, humid, sunny Georgia summer day of the year¡ª85 degrees or so. Good time for a dunk in the pool. That¡¯s when we¡¯ll be most grateful that teardown is nothing more than loading into your car whatever you brought with you. Hope to catch some of you on the air over the weekend! Dave UW

Guess who we had dinner with today¡
Tried to kidnap Eric to bring him back for N4N FD but he would have no part of it. Ha

Field Day preps
4
Field Day preps Eddie and I are getting together Saturday (late afternoon, early evening) to get the radios and computers configured for Field Day. Others are welcome to join us if interested. Focus will be on getting N1MM+ configured to work with the TS-590 and IC-7300, hopefully ready to go for digital, CW, or phone on either radio. Might also set up the TS-2000, but I only have a somewhat long-in-the-tooth Window 7 laptop for that. Not sure if that will run the latest software. Anyone else interested in coming by Field Day weekend? It will be a much more laid back effort than some in the past. Wire antennas, two or three radios, good food and beer. We¡¯ll play with satellite a bit too. Dave UW

FD 2023
5
FD 2023 So, looks like three folks are in for FD 2023¡ªme, Eddie AE4TQ, and Gary WB4SQ. The two-radio setup ought to work fine. I have the TS-2000 also we can use for VHF if 6m is open and there is an operator interested. The plan would be to set up the radios on the deck as in the past¡ªbut the deck is rather different after this spring¡¯s project. The ¡°old¡± covered part of the deck is the same, except it is all open steps down to the pool rather than railing. There is a new 12x15¡¯ or so covered area as well where the high top table is now. We should have plenty of space. Margaret is planning to head downtown for a weekend with grandkids, so we¡¯ll have the place to ourselves. When the time gets closer we can figure out what we want to throw on the grill for supper Saturday. I¡¯ll make breakfast on the flat top grill Sunday morning, and something simple (burgers and brats?) at 2pm Sunday when the operating ends. For those interested, if you want we can get together at the Wings Caf¨¦ and Tap Room on Roswell Rd about ? of a mile east of the 120 loop. It¡¯s in the NW corner of the East Lake Shopping Center (there is also a Harbor Freight in the shopping center). Maybe we can come up with a thing or two to try for the first time? Dave UW

Field Day 2023
6
Field Day 2023 Gents, It¡¯s getting close to FD so it¡¯s probably time to figure out what we¡¯re going to do this year. First thing we need, of course, is some idea of who is interested in participating this year. I have spoken to Jeff N1KDO and Tim WK4U and they are out this year. Eddie AE4TQ is in, as am I. Who else is interested in participating? The last couple of years we trimmed waaaaaay back on the setup level of effort. Instead of trying to raise two or three yagi, we instead raised a few wire antennas, and put up phased verticals for 40m in the front yard. All of the wire antennas were raised by one person on Friday morning of FD weekend. I¡¯m all for doing something similar this year to keep the setup effort to a minimum. We have gotten together the weekend before Field Day to get the N1MM setup done on the computers, and verify the rig control, WSJT-X interfaces, and CW interfaces (if there are any CW ops) are working. This has worked really well, so plan on gathering any rigs we plan to use on Saturday June 17 to get things set up. Eddie has been the guru leading the software setup, so that will depend on his availability. Last year we had three ops, and all preferred to operate FT4/FT8. We were also ready for phone, but there wasn¡¯t much interest. So what modes are folks interested in this year? As far as radios, we have my Kenwood TS-590 and Eddie¡¯s IC-7300 so far. With just those two radios we could probably keep 4 or 5 operators happy with their operating time. If more folks are interested, we may need one or two more. The past couple of years we have operated one or more stations from solar power and batteries. It has been a great learning experience¡ªglad we did it, as it isn¡¯t necessarily as simple as it might seem. We learned that a lot of the amp and amp-hour ratings for panels and batteries are, shall we say, rather inflated. But we have enough equipment to operate at least one station from solar/battery power. We have a Honda EU-2000 that can power a few more if needed. Open to ideas for a thing or two we can try for the first time this year. Nice to have some opportunity to learn a new thing or two. So, who¡¯s in? For those who are in, what modes tickle your fancy? Great Hamvention!
9
Great Hamvention! I had a great time with Eric W4MC at Hamvention. We split our time between wandering the boneyard and sitting in the tents. Didn¡¯t bring all that much to sell, but sold almost everything that I brought. Eric sold one toy and bought another one to replace it, but that¡¯s his story to tell. I got a new Hygain DCU rotor controller so I can computer control the rotor for the 6m yagi soon. I also bought the yaesu azi-eli rotor and I¡¯m determined to figure out satellite operation. That will be my next new ham radio adventure. The weather was near perfect! Enough so that I had to pause from time to time and make sure it wasn¡¯t a dream. Sunny, clear skies, and temps in the mid 70s and low humidity (like outdoor air conditioning) for the drive up on Wednesday. Same thing Thursday and Friday. Between midnight and 8 am got a bit of rain, but not enough to make the boneyard muddy. By 9am the sun was shining, and by 1100 or so the temps were back into the 70s, low humidity, and just beautiful. Best weather I¡¯ve seen for the Hamvention weekend in maybe 30 treks. Maybe the weather put folks in a good mood, because we had lots of great conversations with folks passing by. I didn¡¯t run into very many Atlanta area folks. Tim WK4U visited a couple times. Also saw Brian W3CP several times (if I could work half of the countries I see him working on 6m FT8, I¡¯d have DXCC on that band too). Other than a few guys in GA Tech T-shirts that caused Eric to mutter GO DAWGS, that was about it for the GA crowd. I¡¯m sure others must have been there, but I missed them. (And if I¡¯m forgetting somebody who did stop by, forgive my old man CRS) The last couple of years I didn¡¯t spend a lot of time wandering the boneyard, but this year I did, and it seemed a bit different that in the past. Way more ham stuff and (at least IMHO) way less motorola/GE stuff. I liked that. Seemed to be the year for CW keys in the boneyard-lots available. (BTW, I¡¯m up to 205 confirmed on CW now, and have yet to plug a key into the radio). Only a handful of antennas for sale in the boneyard¡ªmaybe a dozen in the whole boneyard. Seems like there used to be a lot more. I was asked to look for some hardline, but this year the miles and miles of any size, any length hardline weren¡¯t there. Lot¡¯s of short lengths of ?¡± hardline, no long pieces. So maybe less big bulky low-price stuff, but as I said, there were radios/mics/keys/rotors/accessories in abundance. Seemed odd to me, but maybe 20% of the boneyard spots that were sold were never occupied. Not sure what¡¯s up with that. Can¡¯t blame the weather. I wish I could tell you about all the wonderful new things I saw in the inside exhibits, but to be honest, I didn¡¯t notice a lot of new things. Kenwood had a promise of a new HT to replace the TH-D74 (it will be the TH-D75), maybe ready next year. It¡¯s essentially the same radio redesigned around chips and parts they can actually get. Same GPS/APRS/D-star functions as the D74. But it looks like maybe, just maybe, they aren¡¯t leaving the ham market after all. I talked to Phil Parton about why Kenwood pulled out of Australia (which seemed to many like the beginning of the end for Kenwood ham radio). He said they could really justify a service center and Kenwood support staff for a country/continent with less than 25000 hams total (VK and ZL combined), so they trimmed their organization. North America, with 30 or 40 times as many hams shouldn¡¯t see any change. Per Phil, sales of the 590, 890, and 990 are still fairly strong¡ªand I find it a bit surprising that the TS-590 at around $1500 is selling at all, when the IC-7300 can be had for a bit over $1000. Your mileage may vary. In the ICOM booth I really only was looking at the 9700¡ªmaybe on next year¡¯s list. But I didn¡¯t see anything else that was new since last Hamvention. Might have missed something new in the pile of HTs and mobile rigs they had. About the only thing I looked at carefully in the Yaesu booth was the G-5500 rotor, but didn¡¯t notice anything new. Walked quickly through Elecraft and Flex displays, and didn¡¯t se

A Milestone
5
A Milestone Tonight I worked Jeff N1KDO on 160m phone. In addition to being my first contact on 160m (maybe 2 miles as the crow flies), it was the 2000th band country for DXCC challenge. Thanks Jeff! I¡¯ve submitted the application for the DXCC endorsement, and I¡¯ll mail in the order for the DXCC challenge 2000 endorsement disc for the Challenge plaque tomorrow. Now I can look forward to getting some non-junk mail! Again, thanks Jeff! Dave UW

Anyone going to Dayton?
5
Anyone going to Dayton? Anyone else from the group heading to Dayton this week? Not sure how good the long range weather guessers predictions are, but the forecast doesn¡¯t look too bad. Maybe this year I¡¯ll need the sunscreen more than the umbrella . . . but you never know. Eric W4MC and I will be in the flea market in spots 7214, 7215, 7216, and 7217. It¡¯s along the outer row on the north side of the race track infield, near the tractor pull pit. Stop by and sit a spell and partake of a cold beverage if you have the chance. Also, feel free to drop off any boat anchors you don¡¯t feel like carrying around the boneyard. If anyone needs a ticket, I have one of the flea market tickets available. Same as the general admission, but it allows you in the boneyard before the official start time. It can even come with a VIP parking pass that will let you park on the horse race track. Let me know if you are interested. Looking forward to a good hamfest! Hope to see you there! Dave UW

Antenna work
4
Antenna work Hate to ask again, and sorry about the short notice, but any chance a few folks could help me take down the steppir Wednesday evening around 6pm? Yes, it has crapped the bed again. It has been unreliable enough that I am moving in another direction. Good news is that DX Engineering promptly delivered a new Optibeam, and I am almost finished assembling it. All done but mounting the element tips with pre-drilled holes so no measuring for element lengths. With three sunny, no-rain days in the forecast, I will have it done in plenty of time. The plan Wednesday is just to take the steppir down. Between Wednesday and Saturday I¡¯ll get the rocket launcher top piece/rotor/mast/yagi assembly ready to go, and as luck would have it, I should have critical mass Saturday to raise it, as we are having a family gathering to celebrate daughter Lauren¡¯s impending April 1 wedding. So just a take-down evolution Wednesday. Should take less than an hour. I¡¯ll have a couple of my boys, but I need a few more to get this done. So please let me know if you can lend a hand Wednesday, around 6pm. Dave UW

Anyone going to Dayton this year?
3
Anyone going to Dayton this year? Gents, Eddie, Eric, and I will have our normal flea market spots for Hamvention this year. Anyone else planning on making the trek? If so, stop by and visit a while and have a cold beverage under a cover to stay out of the rain/sun. We¡¯ll be in spaces 7215-7217 in the northwest corner of the horse track infield. I am going to pay for my hamvention flea market spaces tomorrow. If anyone is interested, I can get a few extra flea market vendor tickets. These tickets allow you into the boneyard before the normal opening hours, and are $26, the same price as the normal admission ticket. If anybody wants a flea market ticket, let me know by tomorrow. Time to put the steppir back up
12
Gents, Can any of you help me to put the steppir back up next weekend? I need four folks minimum, preferably five. Should take an hour or so. Maybe we could get lunch before or after. I¡¯d like to shoot for Saturday, but Sunday would also work for me. Long range forecast looks good (sunny, but a bit chilly) both days. Thanks, Dave UW

TIME SENSITIVE: HAARP experiment with the near earth asteroid
2
Hi Guys, If you are near your rig, try tuning in to 9.6 MHz. The HAARP is active. I'm hearing them S4 on my 30M antenna. They are supposed to continue running until about 2300, just over an hour from now. They are doing some testing on a near earth asteroid, see the complete story: https://www.arrl.org/news/amateur-radio-operators-invited-to-participate-in-asteroid-bounce-experiment 73, Joe AJ2Y

Need to take down my steppir
24
Need to take down my steppir Gents, Anybody available the week between xmas and new year to help me take down my steppir? It has a short somewhere in the cable/reflector control unit that I need to get it down to sort out. Same drill as taking the antennas down after Field Day¡ªpull one section at a time from the rocket launcher mast until it drops from 35 ft to 10 ft, then pop off the top piece with antenna and rotor attached. Should take an hour or less. But I need a critical mass of 5 folks. I¡¯ll pick a day when it¡¯s within the window of the 10 day forecast and hopefully choose a day we can count on good WX. Dave UW
