I’m sure it does get worse as you age and, somehow, memories become sharper too. ?I am wondering if writing a blog, just for myself to see, might help. I haven’t yet decided how to shape this, to fictionalise it or what. Self-therapy! :D

I agree with your feelings about getting a reliable techie to do the work; luckily we can afford to do that. ?When we arrived at Titan Computers, there was a row of maybe 8 or 10 27in iMacs on the counter - a beautiful sight! ?Harvey took in a fairly old MacBook Pro, over which he had spilled a glass of squash (!), to see what they can do with it. He was thinking of having an SSD put in it but Titan were not enthusiastic because of the Mac’s age; there had also been an article in my Computeractive magazine making out that such an operation is not necessarily good value in an older laptop.

Did you need any special tools to swap that HD, to get the screen off? When the screen went down a second time, we looked into doing that and thought some kind of sucker tool was needed but we didn’t want to risk doing damage inside which apparently is quite easy.

Thank you, Chris, that looks both fascinating and terrifying! ?I gather that iFixit also has a demonstration page for the operation. ?We picked up my iMac from Titan Computers this morning and, sadly, the handle of its original packaging box ?will no longer stay in place reliably but then it has been moved around several times. Sorry I’m late to this thread, Susan and Jude

It was the Governments who took the forced emigration measures and adoptions, but there must have been an element of the culture then for it to happen – although I suppose the information might have been difficult to come by. ?Nonetheless it was a shameful period in our histories.

I’ve been using Ventura for months now and I find it great. ?I don’t really see commonality between MacOS and iPadOS, except perhaps the Settings panel (was System Preferences). ?Everything works fine, including on my 2017 MacBook 12” Retina.

My 2019 iMac works smoothly and swiftly, but then I did change the hard drive for a 4Tb SSD, and it does have 40Gb RAM. ?I can’t imagine using any of my photo applications with 8Gb or 16Gb which is available on new iMacs.

Re: Suspicious Emails

That phishing address is for any suspicious emails at all; they go to an organisation called Action Fraud. You quickly get an acknowledgement email which includes the number of such emails they have had recently and explains that they look at every email they receive but do not reply to them.

Are they purporting to be from gov.uk? or a variety of senders. Maybe you can only report to that particular phishing addy that pertains to gov.uk.

I have taken to going up to my ISP webmail on their server and sorting/eliminating any junk or mail I don’t want before it even gets to my Mac. In doing so I am teaching the mail server a bit extra apart from what it’s already programmed to recognise as junk.

I’ve not struck anything behaving as you describe as yet down here in Oz. Though certainly I have noticed there have been days junk arriving has raised my antennae.

I’m sure you’re right about Action Fraud being underfunded but my worry was that these obviously potentially harmful emails got into my Inbox yet could not be sent on out again. If I get any more like that, I may ring Zen directly to find out why this happens. Their customer support is prompt and knowledgeable but I’m not always good at explaining my problems. While setting up my new Mini, I noticed that the setup instructions when we were transferring from BTInternet were dated 1993! I kept it because it had our username and other details - on paper, remember that old material? :D

Hi Susan!

I hear you :-) I’m getting spam/phishing emails, e.g. TV License (sic) expired, but they’re going to my Junk folder automatically. I’m not trying to forward them to anyone.

Given that the Government’s commitment to online security is sketchy at best (Action Fraud weekdays business hours only, for instance), I’d be willing to bet that the phishing department is understaffed and underfunded.

Cheers

Hello (Is there anybody there…?)

A larger than usual number of suspicious emails has been coming my way recently. Usually, I can forward them to report@... but a number of them have refused to be forwarded; these look as if they are loaded with something potentially harmful. I am in contact with Zen Internet about these but had deleted them already because they ensconced themselves in an Outbox and kept popping up when I was sending email, so could not be ignored. Anything like this happening at your end of the table? What I am wondering is: how did they get through to me if I cannot forward them onwards?!

Susan

I have avoided Ventura up to now — quit a few of local club members feel the same as me - don’t really want to go to something that behaves more like the iPad. But I may have to contemplate sooner or later I guess.

I note your technique of going to your webmail; I only tried that once and the font was so tiny I never did it again. I may have another look, though. ?The junk that I got was not just the ordinary sort, but plainly malicious and, I would guess, designed to spread malware through something weird that I could see it was carrying, hence my inability to send it myself, so that just begs the question!

If you are using Ventura, I’d be interested to hear your reactions. I think I read that Apple want to make their OS and iOS more alike. I must admit to being taken by surprise by Ventura, as it looked so different. This MBPro, for example, is still on Catalina and my iMac (still waiting to hear if it can be saved) was in High Sierra. ?I suppose, really, there is not much point in a new OS if it doesn’t differ much from the old one, something like the forthcoming Windows 12.
