Update: Outlook not sending/receiving messages and not shutting down
开云体育about my system: OS Name:? Windows 10 Pro Version:? 10.0.19045 Build 19045 System Type:? x64-based PC Office/Outlook 2019 JAWS 2025.2412.50 ? I am writing to provide a little follow up; basically, I don’t have much to share.? I asked JAWS Support for help in regards to Outlook locking up (e.g. cannot send/receive mail and the only way to close Outlook and get mail flowing again is via the Task Manager).? Although my guess is this has nothing to do with JAWS, I felt it worth asking.? At this point, it looks as though JAWS Support cannot help, but perhaps they will be motivated to investigate if enough of us report the problem.? Call or email information is below: Support at FreedomScientific.com Technical Support Telephone: (727) 803-8600 Contact/Sales:? (800) 444-4443 I’m almost certain that I’ve used the toll-free number to get support. International Sales Telephone (including Canada): (727) 803-8000 ? As some of you know, I set the automatic send time for 120 minutes, and things went well for several days, until recently when I’m having to close Outlook via Task Manager multiple times per day.? So, I’m once again investigating. ? Google shows many individuals (who do not reference JAWS) have experienced the problem over the past several years.? When I have time, I will dive deep into Google results to see if I can find a solution. ? Katrina ? |
开云体育This is another issue that I am having, using NVDA. I use Windows 11. So since both screenreaders are experiencing the issues you have addressed with Outlook, it freezing and not sending/receiving, I suspect the issues have more to do with Microsoft than with the screen reader. ? A couple of side notes:? The "classic" standalone versions of Outlook are well-known for being "temperamental" and with difficult to diagnose issues.
?
Outlook 2016 and 2019 both officially go out of support on Oct 14, 2025.
?
Depending on whether or not you use the advanced features of Outlook (e.g. VBA scripts) this is a good time to consider transitioning to New Outlook if you don't intend to upgrade either to a later and in-support version of Microsoft Office (2021 - EOL Oct 13, 2026, or 2024 - EOL Oct 9, 2029) or M365.
?
End of life for Outlook Classic in all its forms is currently slated for October 2029.

This may appear to be a stupid question, but is Office version 16 the same as Office version 2016? | Wayne Senior, Dewsbury, England

开云体育Thank you, Brian.? My guess is that I am not using advanced features of Outlook; VBA scripts doesn’t ring a bell.? Because of your prior informative messages about the end of support, I know that action is needed soon.? I will most likely get a later and in-support version of Microsoft Office, probably 2024.? I have saved one of your messages that I believe advises how to do that.? I wasn’t feeling pressure to do it immediately, since support ends in the fall, but if you think there’s a possibility of making Outlook perform better, I might consider it a priority. ? Wayne,
?
? ? ? ?Anyone saying Outlook 16 these days pretty much has to be most likely talking about Outlook 2016, since the Office suites have had year designations as major version numbers since 2003 (2007, 2010, 2013, 2016, 2021, 2024).
?
Katrina,
?
I stand by what I've said earlier about Outlook Classic, regardless of what version of Office it runs under or under M365:? It is now a step-child in wind-down mode.? Microsoft has been trying to finally get rid of it for many years now, and would have made it sunset long before 2029 if there weren't an absolutely immense embedded user bast that requires a lot of time to plan out their migrations over time.
?
For individual users, if you're not an Outlook power user, then I'd use Outlook for Windows, the free email, calendar, and contacts app that now replaces what had been the Windows 10/11 Mail, Calendar, and People Apps.? The user interface is identical to that of New Outlook for the functions it supports, and at this point New Outlook has a long way to go in terms of integrating all the capabilities that power users of Outlook Classic use.? But they're going to have to do this prior to 2029.
?
The future is New Outlook and Outlook for Windows.? But it's only New Outlook that's technically part of M365, even though at this point in time it's visually and pretty much in all ways indistinguishable from Outlook for Windows, but that will change over time.

A worthwhile additional test is to enlist sighted assistance and see if the behavior persists when no screen reader is in use.? If it does, then it's definitely something with Outlook.? If it doesn't, it could be Outlook, the screen reader, or interaction side effects between the two.
?
It's also worth knowing whether anything appears to be occurring visually, and I do mean anything other than a freeze, when that lag is occurring with a screen reader active.
?
The use of a screen reader results in what Joseph Lee so aptly named "information blackout" in many instances because a screen reader has focus in one location at any given moment in time.? It doesn't "split attention" the way someone just looking at a screen can and does, so sometimes something's happening that is "invisible" to the screen reader since that's not where its focus is at the time it's happening.

开云体育What constitutes an Outlook power user? I guess if I have to ask, I may not be one, but I’m curious to know what functionality I would sacrifice by potentially switching over. I’d be more inclined to switching if I knew my email would flow to and from without shutting off at the task manager. ? Joe ? -- Joe Orozco: Your Message, My Mission https://joeorozco.com/services/ ? I'll give some examples, but your own answer nails it.? If you're a power user of anything you know that you're a power user.
?
In Outlook, some things that might be used by power users:
1. Using Outlook Rules where the identification criteria is not just limited to who a message comes from or a word or words in a subject line.? There are 31 different criteria that can be used in combination to identify a message for filtering.? If you're not using at least 3 in some combination, then you're not a power user for the filtering identification side of rules.
2. Using multiple actions for a rule which do more than just moving a message to a specific folder or automatically deleting it.
3. Making the registry edits necessary to reveal the action to "Run a script" and then using VBA scripts to take very complicated, specific actions based upon the actual content of a message.
4. Using email message templates (OFT file extensions) and particularly in conjunction with mail merge functions.
5. Know the difference between message preview and the reading pane "just off the top of your head."
?
Essentially, you're not a power user if all you do is send and receive email and the most complex processing you might do is with rules to move messages from specific people or having certain words in the subject line to folders besides your inbox.? Most of us are not Outlook power users, including myself.

I believe the Preview pane is exactly that,
previewing a message without opening it, but I'm foggy on what exactly the,
Reading pane, is?? I have mine set to, Off, but am I hurting my readability

Mike,
?
In Outlook, there is no such thing as the preview pane in the most recent versions of Outlook.? The reading pane is often referred to as the preview pane because that's the name used in some other email clients.? Thunderbird calls it the Message Pane. It exists so that you do not have to open a separate reading window.
?
Message preview, as I mentioned earlier, is a part of the mailbox itself.? You can turn it on to show the first 1, 2, or 3 lines of a message right in the mailbox message list.? It's completely separate from the Reading Pane.
?
File Explorer does have a preview pane option (or a details pane option - both take up the same space, so you have one or the other), but Outlook does not.

开云体育Brian, reporting back on your recommendations. ? Someone with vision observed as I tapped Enter to open one of the troublesome messages.? JAWS was running.? Of course I heard lengthy silence, while she immediately started reading the message out loud…no delay in opening the message for those with vision.? Thus, in her mind, there isn’t a problem.? I didn’t remove JAWS, and ask her to observe, as at the point, it didn’t seem necessary since she didn’t observe any problem when JAWS was active. ?Should I bother to share this with JAWS Support?? I mean, doesn’t that infer the problem is related to JAWS? ? Also, I had her observe my attempt to apply the view to subfolders.? She saw my one and only mail account was checked, that the subfolders under the checked account weren’t checked and that the option to apply to subfolders wasn’t checked.? When I checked the latter option, I heard/she saw the option switched to checked.? However, the subfolders remained unchecked.? I probably should have clicked “OK” and went back in there so she could confirm what I hear is what she could see…unchecked subfolders and apply to subfolders option, but that did not happen.? The view appears to be applying to subfolders, so there isn’t a problem; I just find it curious that the list of subfolders remained visually/auditorily unchecked, when the option to apply to subfolders is checked.? Perhaps the status of checkmarks on the subfolders means something different than I am assuming. ?Again, just pondering. ? Katrina ?
