There are a ton of ways one might do this, but at the moment (5/11/2025) what follows is probably the simplest.

?

With focus in your inbox message list, if you hit the Alt key, and only the Alt key . . .

?

1. If you are in New Outlook, you should hear your screen reader announce:
Ribbon region (NVDA)
Home Tab Selected (JAWS)
Ribbon tabs group (Narrator)

?

2. If you are in Outlook Classic, you should hear your screen reader announce:
Ribbon Tabs (NVDA)
Upper Ribbon (JAWS)
Ribbon Tabs Pane (Narrator) ?

?
My guess is that if someone's accidentally done a press of alt, and just alt, or hits alt and lets it go before also hitting S, this is where the trouble can begin.? Ctrl + Enter and Alt + S both do a send provided focus is in the message body.? Ctrl + Enter is just less likely to accidentally throw focus elsewhere, so it's more reliable.

What "makes sense" is not what matters (and I happen to agree with you about what would make sense).? What matters is what works, and is officially documented.
?
What I like, or you like, at any given moment in time is not relevant.? What works, and is documented, is.
?
Folks are going to have to get used to the idea that there are times where things change.? Microsoft has been moving toward a unified User Interface for both the free and paid versions of Outlook for a long time now, and that's what New Outlook over 365 and Outlook for Windows (the free client) achieve.
?
Feedback can be provided to Microsoft via the Windows Feedback Hub or, in the case of either New Outlook or Outlook Classic, the Feedback option in the Help menu, accessed with Alt, E, F.

Alt with the letter S makes more sense for sending an email then control with enter. Although both keyboard shortcuts worked in outlook classic, they should just be brought over to the new version of Outlook.

It's been discussed here and elsewhere recently, but Microsoft is moving away from using "Outlook (new)" and "Outlook (classic)" as the designations to just "Outlook" and "Outlook (classic)".
?
This makes perfect sense as what has been being called "New Outlook" is not particularly new anymore and will be the one and only Outlook come 2029.? And since Outlook Classic will hang around until that time, too, it's keeping that designation.

Yes, I don’t have the same exact issue but alt S does not send emails for me anymore. I have the latest version of the screen reader 2025 and windows but to be honest I’m not sure exactly but I’m pretty sure I’m using Outlook classic. It used to say classic in parentheses but now it doesn’t anymore so I’m not sure if that’s a change with Microsoft, but I don’t know why they didn’t just keep outlook the way it was and has been for years.

Hello, I am the person having the problem with the alt key.

I am using windows 11 with JAWS 2025 and office 365.

Whenever I use Outlook and respond to a message it triggers the problem.? I press alt s to send a message, sometimes the message does not send and I have to press the delete key to remove the s so it is not inserted into the message.? When I press alt s again, the message sends but then? I have the problem with the alt key.? The computer won’t let me do anything else so I have to reboot but when I press alt f4 and select shutdown and then press the enter key, it says alt enter and I have to do a hard reboot.

Today I closed JAWS and using Narrator and with Narrator the problem disappeared so maybe it is A JAWS problem.

I have spoken to the Microsoft accessibility line for support several times with no results.

Since today I switched to Narrator it seems to work.? Also I am also pressing control enter to send messages in Outlook to see if that helps and will not trigger the alt key.? ?

I hope that maybe if it is a JAWS problem and using Narrator it doesn’t happen I hope the problem has been resolved.? This is a new computer which I have had for only two months, thanks, Judy

Anyone using gmx with outlook over 365?

Hi all,

I am wondering if anyone using gmx email with outlook365.? I am refering to the new outlook and not the outlook clasic.? I tried adding my account but it says I might need an app password.? This would not be a mager issue except that I have set this up in other email clients before and can do it just fine in thunderbird with no problem.? I tried going through the prosses of setting up 2factor authentication but it doesn't seem to be excepting the codes used in the authenticater app.? Anyone here using gmx with the new outlook and had trouble setting this up?? Did you have to add 2auth on your account for this to work.? Thanks all.

Well, I can't speak to it only being purchased directly from Microsoft, as there are other options for subscribing to M365 through third-party sellers.? But it definitely is about M365 subscriptions that auto-renew by default, as that is by far the most common way of managing M365.

You're the first person I know of that's buying on an annual basis without auto-renewal.

Just a question for clarification.

?

Am I correct to assume that these instructions apply to a subscription that is purchased directly from Microsoft with autorenewal turned on?

?

I don’t get the options you are mentioning on my screen.

?

I have autorenewal turned off and have up until now purchased a subscription from a discount IT store in Sydney and applied the code provided with the purchase.

?

Thanks for any clarification

Hello All, I am giving these instructions a rerun once every several months since the worldwide "free trial" (and the trial is free) of integrated Copilot in M365 began in January 2025.? This trial is free until you reach your annual renewal date, and if you have not elected to "downgrade" back to M365 Classic, you will see an increase of $30 per year to keep integrated Copilot, and that is going to be the default subscription.? You must downgrade if you don't want integrated Copilot and the price increase.

?

--------------------

I realize that the partial screenshot I am going to place in this post will not be directly helpful to many, but for those of you that do have sighted assistants around, it will show them precisely what they should be looking for.? I'll also give a brief description of the identifying text for screen reader users.

?

First, go straight to the cancel page for M365 for your account: ??

If you're logged in to your Windows account and it's MS Account linked, this should take you straight there without having to do any of the steps from within MS-Word or another Office Suite program to get there.

?

Here is what you should see, literally, if you scroll down the page a bit, it is not at the top:

?

There is a section that is labeled:? Choose a plan that's right for you.

?

Immediately beneath that are two boxes, both of which have bright yellow strips beneath the following respective text:

- Current Subscription

- Current Subscription without AI

?

The first will show the new "default" form of M365 Family or Personal (depending on your current subscription) with the price increase related to keeping integrated Copilot after the trial period ends at your next renewal date.? In the USA that's $30/year more than an existing subscription price. In my case, since I'm the primary subscriber for M365 Family, immediately below is: Microsoft 365 Family, $129.99/year.

?

The second option, without AI, will show the price you're currently paying, as "Classic."? In my case, immediately below is:? Microsoft 365 Family Classic, $99.99/year.? Then, after the list of services that go with the non-AI version, is a Switch Plan button which, if activated, would keep me on the Classic level when my renewal date arrives, leaving my current services unchanged.

?

There is a third box, with no yellow banner, that reads Microsoft 365 Personal, $99.99/year, that is about the "with AI" version of M365 Personal.? If you are a M365 Personal subscriber already, this box may either be entirely absent or might be replaced with one for M365 Basic.? I just can't say.

BTW, I just used the "Switch Plan" button to go back to M365 Family Classic so that I would not forget in August.
?
Even when you make this choice, your trial with integrated Copilot remains active until your renewal date later in the year, so if you do want to go back to Classic you can still keep playing with integrated Copilot until your renewal date.

Re: Command in Word to Center a Line

You do not say what screen reader you're using, but you have to remember order of precedence for keyboard shortcuts:
1. Windows - if it's a Windows shortut, then the OS processes it and your're done.? If it's not, then it gets passed to . . .
2. Screen reader gets next crack.? And since most screen readers allow remapping of keyboard shortcuts to some extent if it has "stolen" a shortcut that might be used by the program being accessed, then it processes it.??
3. Last, the program being accessed.
?
My guess is that Ctrl + E has somehow been taken by your screen reader if it's not centering text in Word.? The easiest way to at least try to verify this is to enter the screen reader's pass-through command before you hit Ctrl + E for Word.? If it suddenly works, you have your answer - the screen reader has it and you need to assign whatever it's using it for to a different shortcut.
