Re: How to use Co Pilot?

Copilot in Word (or any of the Office Suite programs) is not an AI search, or definitely not primarily an AI search, but more of an AI assistant.
?
But if I open the Copilot sidebar/pane with Alt, H, F X, and then give the prompt, "Find me the Bible passage for the Sermon on the Mount," it returns the chunk of Matthew 5 for just that and has an Insert button after what it returns, which places that content in the document at wherever your insertion point was when you hit the button.

Yes.? And what I'm about to propose is pretty much necessary in these early days of AI assistance in Office, and that's using AI searches for tips on how to use the AI assistance.? I asked the standalone Copilot App (though I could have used ChatGPT, Perplexity.ai, etc.), "How do I use Copilot in Word to help write a letter?"? ?Here's the answer it provided (and note, in this early stage, with things changing quickly, small bits are inaccurate and require tweaking):
----

Using Copilot in Word to compose a letter is straightforward and efficient! Here's how you can do it:

  1. Start a New Document: Open Word and create a new blank document.

  2. Draft with Copilot: Look for the "Draft with Copilot" box. [Note: this is inaccurate.? It's been replaced by the Copilot button in the Home ribbon, once activated and the Copilot sidebar opens, there is an edit box for the Copilot prompt.? You can also hit Alt + I in the blank document to open the Draft with Copilot box instead.] Here, you can type a prompt describing the letter you want to compose. For example, you could write, "Compose a formal business letter requesting a meeting."

  3. Generate Content: Click "Generate," and Copilot will create a draft based on your input. You can review the draft and choose to keep it, regenerate it for a different version, or discard it.

  4. Fine-Tune the Draft: If you want to adjust the tone, style, or content, you can provide additional instructions in the compose box. For example, you might say, "Make it more concise" or "Add a polite closing statement."? [Hit the Generate Content button after you give Copilot the refinement prompt.]

  5. Enhance Existing Content: If you already have a draft, Copilot can help refine it. Use the "Inspire Me" feature to expand on your ideas or improve the flow.

  6. Reference Files: If you want Copilot to use specific files as a reference, you can upload them or mention them in your prompt. This is especially useful for creating letters based on existing templates or documents.

Remember, Copilot is there to assist, but you'll need to review and personalize the draft to ensure it fits your needs perfectly. You can find more details on .

Let me know if you'd like help crafting a specific letter!

----

I stuck some quick notes I made inside square brackets in the instructions.? It's the first time I played with Copilot at all in word and, on the whole, the instructions are reasonably accurate, if not perfect. It never hurts to try several different AI search engines for instructions such as this because they all rely on Large Language Models that have different resources from which they draw.

When you have finally determined precisely what the parameters are for the SAVE AS configuration that you desire (assuming that you are working in MS Word), , rename the document “1 empty document). I would then copy this to the Desktop, open the document, select ALL, and delete the contents of the document, and then I would save this empty document and keep it on the Desketop as “1 empty document.” Why?Whith this empty document having a title beginning with the number 1, it is quickly located with first character navigation. It can be quickly located and opened, ready to be populated with text. Within the document, use F 12 to rename the document as anything that you would like. ?You can, for example copy the contents of any other text document into this empty document and then save it to a pertinent file name. The renamed document is now on the Desktop, and now can be moved to a relevant folder for final disposition. This procedure is useful for saving the text contents from other text editors, web pages, and e-mail messages in Word format. I have had a file such as this on my Desktop for years, and have never had to invoke any of Word’s frustrating cluster of selections preceding the SAVE command. Hope that works for you.

Edward,

Try leaving focus on the file name instead of tabbing to the same button. when the focus is on the file name, it should save where everything is set to be. That is what Microsoft Accessibility had told me and I had passed that information onto the list a few months ago.

Believe it or not.? I agree ??????????? with both of you.? Last time I posted that I wouldn’t post anymore on a topic, I was accused of controlling things, said my piece then cowardly dropped the topic. So speaking for myself, I won’t continue this thread.? We now return you to your regularly scheduled program.? Smile.? ?

P.S.? There's a reason I beg people to read the entirety of a topic, no matter what group we're talking about, before posting anything else.? I can't count the number of times something's asked that's already been answered, and it's asked because the questioner jumped on the first post they read in a given topic/email thread before making their way through to the last one.

I concur, but I also allow for a bit of social thread drift after any central point has been addressed, and where such drift is not, in any meaningful sense, hijacking the topic.
?
Folks who simply can't abide this sort of thing should use the "Mute this topic" link available at the bottom of any individual message send out by Groups.io.? It's the instant "hush pill," for that topic.? You'll get not a single other thing from it.? Very handy in a multitude of instances, really.

I suspect this sidebar has likely died it's natural death at this point [hint, hint].

I don’t think Microsoft 365 has a dishwashing mode yet, ?.
