Subject: [M365-Accessibility] M365 Family - What happens if the primary subscriber dies?

?

I figure this should be put out now simply because I'm thinking about it and it is indirectly involved with issues of M365 billing.

?

M365 Family has a primary subscriber (the person paying for all 6 seats) as well as those who M365 is shared with as family members.? There is no way to transfer an M365 Family subscription from person to person.? So, if the original primary subscriber dies, at the renewal date someone else "in the family" is going to have to set themselves up as the next primary subscriber within the family and share out seats to other family members.

?

There need be no interruption in service.? I don't tend to do the "cancel and subscribe as primary subscriber" steps until the renewal date is near.? Were someone not to know that their primary subscriber has passed (if it's very near to renewal date) I have to believe that Microsoft will end up sending messages to all the "family seats" that the subscription has not been renewed, which would give time for the appointed person to subscribe again as the primary subscriber and share whatever seats they'd need to.

?

Remember that even for M365 Family, each seat is associated with an individual's Microsoft Account, so if you have an existing M365 subscription, you will keep it through the end of the contract term (because it is prepaid) and there is the ability to pick up the next subscription starting on the renewal date.

?

I have never tried this "far in advance" when someone has passed away.? I would imagine that it might work very much like the setup we're currently seeing with the new M365 Personal/Family integrated Copilot trial.? You could probably subscribe yourself as a new primary subscriber months ahead of your current seat subscription ending, and it would pick up as of the renewal date.? But anyone considering this should contact Microsoft to ensure that's the case.? There would be no sense in subscribing in August as the new primary subscriber if your seat is good through December, but the renewal date were to be reset to the date you set yourself up as the new primary subscriber.

Re: Can the process of upgrading to a newer Microsoft Office version be explained from a screen reader's point of view?

Daniel,
?
The answer to your question, at least from my perspective, is "Yes and no."? Yes for the big picture, no for the nitty gritty details because dialogs during installaiton change over time.? But those nitty gritty details pretty much boil down to, "Answer in the affirmative at every dialog that requires a yes/no type decision," if you want any program to install.? Read the dialog's question(s) just in case there is a "trick one" that would require a "No," answer, but don't expect one in most cases.? You're generally agreeing to the terms/conditions at each step until the install itself kicks off and runs to its end.
?
If you are buying direct from Microsoft, all M365 and Office standalone products are purchased starting at this page: ??
?
You will want to activate the Products dropdown link and choose the appropriate category under "For Home" in all probability to locate what you want to buy.? I have no idea if you're a student still, and student choices are there, too.? If you are a student at any institution of higher learning you would be very well advised to check to see if they have arrangements through Microsoft for M365 for free for you while you are enrolled as a student.? Many colleges/universities have precisely this sort of arrangement.? If you are working for an entity that uses M365, you should check to see if they have a deal with Microsoft for M365 either at no cost or very low cost for employees to use from home while they are employed with that entity.
?
Yes, you should uninstall your existing standalone office prior to installing a fresh copy of the latest version, whether that be M365 or one of the standalone versions of Office.
?
I have not seen many screen reader users hit any show stoppers when they have independently installed M365 or Office.? The process is straightforward and accessible from start to finish.

Can the process of upgrading to a newer Microsoft Office version be explained from a screen reader's point of view?

Hi everyone

?

First off, I would like to thank Brian for making everybody aware of the cut off period for Microsoft Office 2016 / 2019. I didn’t foresee that happening this year, especially two office products going out of support at the same time. This however leads to my dilemma.

?

Unfortunately, I am one of those affected, having been using Office 2019 home and student edition which I purchased with the laptop back in 2018 / 2019. The place where I brought the PC, one of the shop assistants set Microsoft Office all up for me, so I didn’t have to do anything accept just launch the word program and away I go. Now though, what with the two above versions ending support later in this year ?2025, I need to upgrade. However, at a total loss with the process of upgrading from a previous version of the product to Office 2024 which is it's current perpetual version. As of my date of writing this. By this I mean, is it a simple process to buy, download, the Office 2024 stand alone version of the product? Even if I get that far, I have also read that one needs to uninstall their previous Ms Office version, so that it doesn’t conflict with the newer version of the product.

?

?If all of that info is correct, what I am not understanding is where does one go to buy the latest perpetual license of Microsoft Office? Long gone are the days of physical media!

?

I’m sure it’s a case of once you have done it once, you know where to go, what to do and the rest is familiar to you. Would just like to end by saying, I am completely aware of Office 365 but I am more than content with paying a flat fee for the single license. I have my own reasons why I prefer this method and have eyed up the pros and cons of a subscription. Hence, non subscription works better for me in the way I use the product in my day to day life.

?

Thank you for reading and I look forward to advice with this matter.

?

Regards

?

Daniel

Exactly.? And if they die, and no one "reconstitutes" the family at (or near) the renewal date by becoming the primary owner, then the entire family dissolves.? I doubt many who are family members have ever given any of this a second thought.? Much like one had better have some mechanism in place to pass along one's login credentials to one's executor, the analogous preparations to pass "the family" to someone else to manage after one's death makes sense.
?
Most of us who are the primary subscribers want those we may leave behind to know what steps they can take afterward so that they're not suddenly cut off from M365 and that the family does not dissolve.
?
If everyone wants to go their separate ways, then fine.? I don't see that happening with myself and the other members of my extended family who are part of the M365 family when I die.? I expect that one of them will step in to become the primary subscriber and do the necessary sharing of seats from that new subscription to the other family members.

I’m missing something then, or am not clear enough.? The primary owner holds the license, others do not.? The primary owner pays the cost of the membership. So when it comes time to renew, a personal membership is not necessary. When I purchased a family membership years ago, I didn’t charge others to use it, I absorbed the cost. Poverty is subjective.? Some are poor yet think nothing of running out to Starbucks for a coffee or the like once a month, week or in some cases daily.? Basically not having their priorities straight is at the route of it all. Then there are others who live from pay cheque to pay cheque because of the high cost of living, not living high on the hog so to speak.? ????

Because, David, you could have 6 people involved, 5 of whom are not the ones who were the primary subscriber.

?

Are you saying that all 5 of those remaining people should just buy personal subscriptions?? I don't think so.

?

People need to understand what needs to be done if/when the person who is the primary subscription holder for a M365 Family subscription passes and someone else wants to become that primary subscriber and hold "the family" (which may not, in actuality, be a family as commonly construed) together without a lapse in service and possible loss in access.

?

I sure as hell would not want to suddenly be paying $70 or $100 per year for something someone had been sharing with me at no cost, or where a group of up to 6 people got together to split the cost of a family subscription amongst themselves, which even at $130/year, divided by 6, is a lot cheaper per person than a single M365 Personal subscription.

?

People in M365 families are well advised to know what is necessary to keep said families together rather than needing to all suddenly become M365 Personal subscribers at greatly increased expense.

I suspect to transfer a primary membership after a person dies will require a copy of the death certificate as proof for Microsoft that the person has really died and someone isn't trying to take over an account.

Re: The latest storm of chaos from a Microsoft Announcement of changes to the default M365 Personal and Family Plans to include Copilot Functionality in the Office Programs

Alan,
?
You can do the downgrade today through December 8th and be fine.? Nothing will change, including your trial with integrated Copilot, until your renewal date this coming December.
?
As the original Microsoft announcement noted:?
1. Existing subscribers won't experience price changes until their next renewal.?
2. Existing subscribers with recurring billing enabled can switch to other plans without Copilot or??like Microsoft 365 Basic, or, for a limited time, to our new Microsoft 365 Personal Classic or Microsoft 365 Family Classic plans.
3. Your existing subscription might not change immediately, but it will automatically switch to the new plan at renewal. You will not be charged for the new plan until it renews.?
?
From what I've seen so far, the actual plan information on your subscription page changes very promptly to whatever level you've changed to for the next renewal date, and that includes the cost for that plan.? Also, though, your actual existing subscription does not change for the duration of your current contract, so no matter what change you make now, if you were to change your mind and do the cancel/change cycle again before your renewal date, the new service level and cost comes into effect only once your renewal date arrives.

Another note about M365 subscriptions, you cannot change level, and I mean actually have the change take effect, in the middle of an existing subscription run, at least for a downgrade in level.? Changes only occur in actual service level at your renewal date.

?

So, if you're a monthly subscriber, and change from one level to another on the 15th of the month, you will not actually get that service level until the first of the next month, and your billing will be adjusted accordingly.

?

The same applies if you're a yearly subscriber.? When you paid at your subscription date, you paid for a full year and will have that service level for the full year term.? If you downgrade 5 months in that change will not take effect until the next renewal date.? Most "upgrades" up until now have involved add-on services (which Copilot was) that were side attachments to core M365 functionality and handled as their own things with their own subscription.? Now that Copilot is being integrated with M365 Family and Personal, it becomes a part of that core subscription.

I don’t use Windows a lot, but when I do, I don’t want to experience these stability issues while simply trying to read incoming mail. Like you, I encountered them in Outlook Classic, but the New Outlook for Microsoft 365 has resolved them.

Outlook Classic also used to become completely unresponsive at times while reading message lists, although I hadn’t experienced that issue recently. In any case, this isn’t a problem with the New Outlook either. In summary, I’m not going back to Outlook Classic.

With the chance to try Copilot in the New Outlook, I went ahead and switched from Outlook Classic to New Outlook. One thing I've noticed is?that the issue where JAWS, NVDA and Narrator hang on messages with a lot of links, tables and more is pretty much non-existent with the New Outlook.

It's precisely what just got integrated into M365 Personal and Family, as far as I can tell.? It was probably available as an "add-on" of sorts prior to this trial of Copilot integration for all non-business users (possibly only M365 Personal and Family, as I have no idea if M365 Educational is involved, either).
