I figure this should be put out now simply because I'm thinking about it and it is indirectly involved with issues of M365 billing.

M365 Family has a primary subscriber (the person paying for all 6 seats) as well as those who M365 is shared with as family members.? There is no way to transfer an M365 Family subscription from person to person.? So, if the original primary subscriber dies, at the renewal date someone else "in the family" is going to have to set themselves up as the next primary subscriber within the family and share out seats to other family members.

There need be no interruption in service.? I don't tend to do the "cancel and subscribe as primary subscriber" steps until the renewal date is near.? Were someone not to know that their primary subscriber has passed (if it's very near to renewal date) I have to believe that Microsoft will end up sending messages to all the "family seats" that the subscription has not been renewed, which would give time for the appointed person to subscribe again as the primary subscriber and share whatever seats they'd need to.

Remember that even for M365 Family, each seat is associated with an individual's Microsoft Account, so if you have an existing M365 subscription, you will keep it through the end of the contract term (because it is prepaid) and there is the ability to pick up the next subscription starting on the renewal date.

I have never tried this "far in advance" when someone has passed away.? I would imagine that it might work very much like the setup we're currently seeing with the new M365 Personal/Family integrated Copilot trial.? You could probably subscribe yourself as a new primary subscriber months ahead of your current seat subscription ending, and it would pick up as of the renewal date.? But anyone considering this should contact Microsoft to ensure that's the case.? There would be no sense in subscribing in August as the new primary subscriber if your seat is good through December, but the renewal date were to be reset to the date you set yourself up as the new primary subscriber.
