JAWS and the reporting of text being deleted . . .
8
Before I go back and test this on my own machine, I wanted to ask here whether what I think I remember is correct or not. I seem to recall that both JAWS and NVDA will report the character being deleted if you are deleting using backspace one character at a time. And that both would report something if you had a chunk of text selected that you then hit backspace to delete. NVDA is saying something (though it's not "deleted" but may be "erased.") if I have a word, phrase or paragraph or more selected when I hit the delete key. But with JAWS 2024 on the computer of one of my clients, it's dead silent when I am deleting any word or larger chunk of text. Is this the expected behavior or not? I could have sworn that something was verbalized in the past when you hit backspace to delete. BTW, when using NVDA, there is a difference depending on whether you hit Backspace versus the Delete key. When using the latter, the feedback I get is the first letter of the word that follows the chunk of text deleted. If anyone knows whether a parallel difference exists with JAWS, too, that would be good to know. -- Brian ¡¤ ¡á? ¡¤ ???? ¡¤ Virginia, USA - Windows 11 Pro, Version 23H2, Build 22631; M365 Family; Android 13 (Xiaomi HyperOS 1.0.5.0) If you keep your mind sufficiently open, people will throw a lot of rubbish into it. ~ William A. Can anyone tell me why JAWS Find will not locate partial words?
5
I've never had this happen before. I am working with a client and in a Word document he mistyped 2011 as 20011. I have tried a JAWS Find on 20, and it finds nothing. The Find only works if I'm entering 20011, which is a PITA if you know part of what you want to find. Why is it doing this. All documentation and all my experience tell me that a partial word find should work? I want to be able to enter "20" and still have it land on the start of 20011. Another interesting "new wrinkle" in JAWS 2024
4
I know that what I'm about to describe, and use an example of NVDA speech output to illustrate, used to be true of JAWS, too, because for years I taught people "how to listen" to learn what the keyboard shortcuts were to the functions they need to use all the time actually are. You virtually always need to determine new keyboard shortcuts over time, and the screen reader can help you know what they are. Here is an example of the kind of speech output I'm talking about that I logged from NVDA when I was navigating to the Home ribbon in word then dropping into the ribbon and moving to a few of the initial controls: ----- Ribbon Tabs tab control expanded Home tab selected Alt, H 2 of 12 Home grouping Clipboard grouping 1 of 8 Paste split button collapsed Alt, H , V 1 of 5 Copy button unavailable Alt, H , C 1 Ctrl+ C 3 of 5 ----- I was accustomed to both NVDA and JAWS, when I hit Alt + H to throw focus to the Home tab, to not only tell me it has focus there but also what the shortcut to achieve that is afterward. Or, if you just wanted to explore what ribbons are available in a program, hitting Alt then left/right arrowing through the ribbon tabs and hearing somthing like: ------ Ribbon Tabs tab control expanded Home tab selected Alt, H 2 of 12 Insert tab selected Alt, N 3 of 12 Draw tab selected Alt, J I 4 of 12 Design tab selected Alt, G 5 of 12 Layout tab selected Alt, P 6 of 12 ------ JAWS is telling me that I am in, say, the Home tab if I hit Alt + H, but that's all. It never mentions the shortcut that would take me there. If I left/right arrow among the various ribbon tab, I get the name of the tab, but nothing regarding the shortcut. I have to believe that some default has changed to reduce verbosity, but I'd like those specific announcements back on. How do I get JAWS to do this like it used to? -- Brian ¡¤ ¡á? ¡¤ ???? ¡¤ Virginia, USA - Windows 11 Pro, Version 23H2, Build 22631; M365 Family; Android 13 (Xiaomi HyperOS 1.0.5.0) If you keep your mind sufficiently open, people will throw a lot of rubbish into it. ~ William A. JAWS saying "bottom slide index" over and over and over again . . .
5
Following my own advice to others, here is the website you can use to check out what I mean: https://www.volvocarsmidlothian.com I suspect this is the result of a bad website design (there are other issues) but this is the first and only site where JAWS just keeps repeating "bottom slide index" over and over and over again when the person browsing has taken no action at all. It seems to me that it may be reacting to a photo carousel that keeps changing the image once every couple of seconds. All of the above being said, I looked in JAWS settings hoping that something obvious would jump out that I could either check or uncheck to keep this from being announced, as I can't envision any circumstance where a JAWS user would want to be hearing this over and over again. It drove me and my client insane in just the few minutes we were working on that page and some of the other pages of that website. If that setting exists, what is it? -- Brian ¡¤ ¡á? ¡¤ ???? ¡¤ Virginia, USA - Windows 11 Pro, Version 23H2, Build 22631; M365 Family; Android 13 (Xiaomi HyperOS 1.0.2.0) It is well to open one's mind but only as a preliminary to closing it. . . for the supreme act of judgment and selection. ~ Irving Babbitt

JAWS and auto-mode-switching from Forms to Browse (or vice versa)
15
This is a direct spin-off of my earlier query as to whether I was not remembering correctly that auto-mode-switching is the default in JAWS. I have double checked the settings noted in that topic by Gene Warner and confirmed it is on. I am wondering now if the problem may lie in what I remember about when auto-mode-switching occurs. I will use two different sites where the main pages have but one control of interest: amazon.com and carvana.com, where the search edit box is where you want to go first (BTW, the carvana sight turns out to be an accessibility train wreck, but that's not relevant to what I'll cover here. If you go to either one of these websites, the main thing is the search edit box on the first page. If we load either page, and then use the E single letter browse mode shortcut, on both we are shot straight to that edit box and it is given focus, but what does not happen is auto-mode-switching into forms mode when one gets there that way. Contrast this with getting to it by brute force tabbing, or even using the above noted single letter shortcut then tabbling off and Shift + tabbing back. In either of these circumstances, when focus lands on the edit box the mode auto-switches to forms mode. It kinda sorta makes sense that if you are using the single letter browse mode shortcuts that auto-switching might not occur, as the presumption on FS's part is likely that you might need to go to, say, the sixth edit box and it would drive one insane to keep having to switch out of browse mode due to auto-mode-switching every time you land in an edit box. But, and this is the big but, I don't recall that being the behavior. I could be entirely wrong, but I seem to recall that if I got to an edit box or any given control via a browse mode single letter shortcut that it was in "ready to be interacted with" mode (which is forms mode) as soon as it has focus. Is it only if you land in an edit box via tabbing into it, and not when you gain focus via a browse mode E, that mode auto-switches? [P.S. I have run a repair install of JAWS at the end of this session, as a couple of other oddities (or what I think are oddities), occurred, too.] -- Brian ¡¤ ¡á?

Downloading Assets from GitHub
Please see the tutorial for "JAWS Specific" content. But this is something that goes well beyond just JAWS. So many different projects are managed on GitHub, and it seems that so many have a lot of difficulty fetching what they want to fetch from GitHub because they lack just a couple of basic pieces of information. Now you won't if you download and read the tutorial. Asset(s) is the generic term for "the thing(s) I can download from GitHub" that I'm looking for right now. Has a JAWS default been changed, or am I not remembering this correctly?
8
Hello All, For as long as I can remember, when using JAWS with a web browser JAWS would auto-switch from browse to focus mode when you landed in any control (edit box, checkbox, button) when focus landed upon it. Today I was working with a new client using JAWS (2024, I think, I forgot to confirm version) with the amazon.com webpage. I had her do "my usual thing" of hitting E to throw focus to the one and only edit box on the page, the search box. It worked as far as throwing focus there, but it did not automatically switch to forms mode to allow typing, and I could swear it used to. The client swears that she has made no changes to JAWS and I definitely believe her. Has the default changed or have I just forgotten that the default is NOT to switch between browse and focus mode when focus lands on a control? -- Brian ¡¤ ¡á? ¡¤ ???? ¡¤ Virginia, USA - Windows 11 Pro, Version 23H2, Build 22631; M365 Family; Android 13 (Xiaomi HyperOS 1.0.2.0) It is well to open one's mind but only as a preliminary to closing it. . . for the supreme act of judgment and selection. ~ Irving Babbitt

Picture Smart on Videos
2
Hello. I just wanted to share that it is possible to use Picture Smart to describe things in videos. If I'm watching a video on YouTube and I want it to describe something, I put the video in full-screen by pressing "f", then when it is at the bit I want a description of, I get Picture Smart to describe the screen. This won't work well where the video is fast-moving. It works on videos and streams where people are being interviewed, or doing crafts.

Applying Dictionary Changes to Vocaliser Only
Hello. I mainly use the British English Vocaliser voices when using Jaws. I only use Eloquence in Microsoft Word. There are some words Vocaliser doesn't say properly, so I have been correcting the pronunciations in Jaws dictionaries. When you apply changes to a language, you can choose to apply the changes to a specific synthesiser. It displays every synthesiser except Vocaliser. The only language options are the Eloquence options without variants. For example, English covers American and British English. This means if I want to change how Vocaliser pronounces words, I have to apply the changes to all synthesisers. The problem with doing that, is that the change I make may fix how Vocaliser pronounces something, while causing Eloquence to pronounce the word incorrectly. Eloquence was pronouncing the word correctly before. Is there a way to apply pronunciation changes to Vocaliser only? -- Wayne Senior, Dewsbury, England. google chrome bookmarks

Hi, had to do a windows reset as my keyboard was not working and speech was intermittent. Now for some stupid reason, got the latest googlechrome. When I try to import my favorites from two files named bookmarks.html and otherbookmarks.html, the list does not import. So do I use edge or mozilla firefox and how easy or hard to import my bookmarks. Google chrome was doing that on wed, before my machine chrashed and screwed up after doing the jaws may update and totally messed it up. So, is there a way to contact google accessibility about this issue. Answer desk is currently closed at the moment in Australia. So how to get my bookmarks and then have to search for sites. And it does not do that, so created bookmarks. And then it has this stupid slider and then pin to toolbar. So any one had this issue. Going to then get the latest chrome. This is stupid. JAWS OCR and "permanence" of the result
8
First, I'll admit I'm being lazy here and don't have the time at the moment to check this myself. If you have an image-scanned PDF file open that is of text, like an article, and use JAWS OCR to extract the text, does the resulting text "stay with" the file thereafter, or can it be made to do so? Or is the result something that is held by JAWS and exists only until you close the document and/or JAWS? -- Brian ¡¤ ¡á? ¡¤ ???? - Virginia, USA - Windows 11 Pro, Version 23H2, Build 22631; M365 Family; Android 13 (MIUI 14) I prefer true but imperfect knowledge, even if it leaves much undetermined and unpredictable, to a pretense of exact knowledge that is likely to be false. ~ F.A. windows 24 h2 11

Hi. Just listened to the windows computer and technology channel on utube. And Microsoft in the next windows 11 24 h 2 home and pro bitlocker will be enabled. So either you have to add a registry hack or use rufus and then download to a usb and then tick no to have bitlocker enabled. I did a firmware update on my laptop and had bitlocker by mistake after doing a firmware update and had an older bitlocker key until I then went to my Microsoft account on another laptop or on my phone. So, have let vispero know of this possible change and could affect blind people running windows 11. Marvin.

What "accessibility workarounds" might I have using JAWS (2022) in this situation?
5
I have a client who is trying to use a commercial software package called Methasoft in an addiction treatment clinic, and it's an accessibility nightmare. Parts of it clearly get exposed to JAWS, and others don't, making it very difficult to know exactly where you are and what you're doing at any given moment. I have already started discussions about the need for custom scripting, but that will not occur in short order, so I'm looking for possible workarounds in the meantime. I will give one example, in one dialog, as something we're facing. If you go to do a patient lookup, none of the search edit boxes are labeled, but, because we only use patient ID number or patient surname, it's easy to know that you enter ID number in the first edit box, and surname in the third, if you're using each, respectively. But if you are using either the ID number or surname, and perform the search, there is a table where the resulting patient(s) are presented in a list that I cannot gain access to by keyboard for love nor money. However, the information needed is visible on screen, and if we could get it read to us, via any technique, that would go a long way at the moment. I have not dealt with the need to "virtualize" screens that don't read by usual methods, but I seem to recall that can be done. Sort of like OCRing the dialog itself and dealing with the resulting text document. Can this sort of thing be done, and, if there's more than one way to do it, what method is likely best? By the way, Methasoft is not a web app, so most of the keyboard shortcuts one might be able to use if it were do not apply. For instance, I can't use the T shortcut to locate that table in the dialog, which is one of the major problems. I have only been able to access the data returned there by point and click, which is useless to a screen reader user since pointing is not an option (though clicking can be). Any ideas that anyone might have to offer as far as getting some sort of access would be appreciated. Realize that I know that anything suggested is a stopgap, workaround measure. I'm not trying to leave the client with a piece of inaccessible software that she can only get partial access to in order to do her job. But even partial, or more partial than we've got now, is a step forward. ~ F.A. [Multi-posted] JAWS Scripts for Methasoft Version 8.1.3.0 (4/16/2021)
Hello All, I will also be posting this on the other two JAWS groups where I participate, as I really don't know how much overlap exists between memberships of these three groups. If you have any information, it need only be offered on one of thes topics. Given how niche this need is, I'm trying to get as many views in hopes someone may have knowledge of scripting already done. I have a client working in an addiction recovery clinic and their main client management software is Methasoft Version 8.1.3.0 (4/16/2021). This software is not a web app, and it is an accessibility nightmare. There are no tricks I can use to allow reasonable and consistent navigation within this application as it stands, so the only hope of that is if it has JAWS scripts for it (or we're going to have to look into having custom work done, and any recommendations for custom script writers would be appreciated, too, in case we need 'em). I have already tried all the web search magic I have in my fingers hoping I could find existing scripts myself but have come up empty. But I also know that often custom scripting is considered a one-off project and the results aren't publicized as a product. So if anyone knows if an existing set of scripts is available out there for Methasoft, would you please share how I can get in contact with whoever I would need to speak to about acquiring them? Thanks. ~ F.A. What Happened to the Talking Installer?
9
I've been using JAWS for a long time. Every year there is a new one. I have JAWS running when I start to install the new version, just as I do if installing a JAWS update. Recently my laptop had to go away to be repaired, and they did a clean install of Windows. This of course meant I had to reinstall JAWS from scratch. No JAWS on the machine. So I downloaded JAWS, then disabled the screen reader I was running and hit enter. An American lady came on and said something like: "to run Narrator, press control+windows+enter." It didn't say I would need to run Narrator, so I didn't bother with that, thinking the talking installer would appear if I just pressed enter. When I pressed enter, I got silence. I brought Narrator up and discovered I was on the next screen. Even JAWS 3.7 had a talking installer. That's the first JAWS I had. I'm shocked to discover that JAWS no longer has a talking installer. I don't know when this changed, but it is the first time I've noticed. I think they should either bring it back, or make the talking message clear enough so people understand that they have to use Narrator or another screen reader to install JAWS. -- Wayne Senior, Dewsbury, England.
