Another interesting "new wrinkle" in JAWS 2024

I know that what I'm about to describe, and use an example of NVDA speech output to illustrate, used to be true of JAWS, too, because for years I taught people "how to listen" to learn what the keyboard shortcuts were to the functions they need to use all the time actually are.? You virtually always need to determine new keyboard shortcuts over time, and the screen reader can help you know what they are.
?
Here is an example of the kind of speech output I'm talking about that I logged from NVDA when I was navigating to the Home ribbon in word then dropping into the ribbon and moving to a few of the initial controls:
-----
Ribbon Tabs ?tab control ?expanded
Home ?tab ?selected ?Alt, ? H ?2 of 12
Home ?grouping
Clipboard ?grouping ?1 of 8
Paste ?split button ?collapsed ?Alt, ? H ?, ? V ?1 of 5
Copy ?button ?unavailable ?Alt, ? H ?, ? C ? ? 1 ? ?Ctrl+ ?C ?3 of 5
-----
?
I was accustomed to both NVDA and JAWS, when I hit Alt + H to throw focus to the Home tab, to not only tell me it has focus there but also what the shortcut to achieve that is afterward.? Or, if you just wanted to explore what ribbons are available in a program, hitting Alt then left/right arrowing through the ribbon tabs and hearing somthing like:
------
Ribbon Tabs ?tab control ?expanded
Home ?tab ?selected ?Alt, ? H ?2 of 12
Insert ?tab ?selected ?Alt, ? N ?3 of 12
Draw ?tab ?selected ?Alt, ? J ? ? I ?4 of 12
Design ?tab ?selected ?Alt, ? G ?5 of 12
Layout ?tab ?selected ?Alt, ? P ?6 of 12
------
?
JAWS is telling me that I am in, say, the Home tab if I hit Alt + H, but that's all.? It never mentions the shortcut that would take me there.? If I left/right arrow among the various ribbon tab, I get the name of the tab, but nothing regarding the shortcut.
?
I have to believe that some default has changed to reduce verbosity, but I'd like those specific announcements back on.? How do I get JAWS to do this like it used to?

In my case, both J2024 and J2025 beta verbalize with no gaps this information in Ms Word and Outlook. Bear in mind that there have been three updates for M365 Office apps only in this week. Of course, I¡¯m in the current channel. However, you can check the following setting:

  • Open setting center, insert plus 6.
  • In the tree view, go to speech verbosity, configure verbosity.
  • After opening this option, push space bar on the verbosity level in use.
  • In the new dialogue, check or uncheck the options as you wish.

Leo,
?
I will try again here tomorrow.? Unfortunately, the client has Office 2019, and I don't know whether any attempt to update it will help or not.
?
I am beginning to be driven crazy by "changes in behavior" under recent versions of JAWS, with versions of Office I've worked with many times in the past, and not knowing why that's happening.? It's making teaching a grand PITA because I get to "step X" and it doesn't work as expected.??
?
A good example today was using Ctrl + Enter to send a message in Outlook.? I am allowed to set this to work, but I never needed to set it to work for many, many moons.? This, however, is NOT a JAWS issue, but a change in Outlook.

Leo,
?
I managed to check out what's happening on my machine - Win11 23H2, JAWS 2024 - September update, Outlook 365, and it's behaving precisely as you descibed and I expect.
?
I'm going to have to check whether I can apply any updates to Outlook 2019 (it might be 2021, but I don't think so) and look at what the settings you pointed me to are set to.? I have no reason to believe that they'll be any different because I did a very recent install of JAWS 2024 on both of these machines.? We were having other issues with JAWS that I could only resolve with a reinstall.? And that, of course, makes me keep questioning what's going on because certain things were (and may still be) idiosyncratic on that machine.
?
I've started taking my own laptop along so I can do "compare and contrast" when something seems to be off.? I just didn't have time to do that today by the time we were encountering this "not announcing the shortcut" issue.
