Posting not returning to message list? #bug? 2
Shal, When I posted in here, both times it took me to the page that said Thank you, your post will be available when approved by the moderators, (or similar wording,), but then instead of taking me back to the message list (last message), it left me with another blank posting box. I thought Mark fixed this? Brenda

Creating a How-To Guide for groups.io 21 #howtoguide
Per Duane's & Vickie's posts in Beta: For info on this topic, see post #s #5878 (near the bottom), #5886, #5890, and #5891 &#5892 which is bringing the topic to over here in GMFio. In here, the topic was discussed in post #'s #209, #254 (I found my missing post) & #255. Maybe those could be merged into this thread, or if not, maybe the thread could be hashtagged to match the one I made here. Anyway, let's use this thread for discussing creating the #HowToGuide, if everyone's okay with that. :) Brenda

Hello I am new here..... 2
...... and not very IT savvy, I need some help please I run a group for my rural village, we have been using yahoo groups but it has limitations; furthermore, a lot of members are not sophisticated IT users, they will read an emailed daily digest but may not want to navigate the groups home page We use the group more for "announcements" than for "conversations" so a daily digest works for most members. However it is unlikely that they will make much use of the home page, I would like them to see the following in the daily digest and wonder if it can be done? Yahoo allows me to put a footer on the daily digest, I use it for forthcoming events and edit it from time to time. I can see a calendar function here but no "footer". Is there a way of putting a footer into the daily digest? Similarly, I would like to add a village business directory in the daily digest, or at the very least a one click link to the database Similarly I would like photos and other file attachments to be visible in the daily digest, or a one click link Is any of this possible? Thank you Jeremy Freedman

Using IP addresses to identify malcontent members 4
In beta@ message 6229: Brenda wrote: /g/beta/message/6229 IP addresses have two shortcomings: the same person may use multiple IP addresses, and multiple people may use the same IP address.[1] The first can come about from the person connecting using different computers (home, work, library), or with a mobile device using different WiFi locations (Starbucks, grocery store, library, home, work). It is also possible, in most cases, for a person with a home internet connection to break that connection and be assigned a different IP address. That used to be very common with dial-up connections, but now connections (and their IP address) tend to last longer (weeks, months) and ISPs often try to give you the same one back after a disconnection, rather than drawing a fresh number from the pool. The second can come about when multiple users are behind the same router/NAT. This can be as small as a home network, or larger such a dormitory, an office, a campus, or in some parts of the world even a whole city. So using an IP address for identification isn't foolproof. But, as long as you're aware of the limitations, it isn't necessarily worthless either if you can combine it with other forms of evidence. Shal 1: At least, for the IPv4 addresses that have been most used to date (usually written as a string of four small numbers combined with decimal points). In the future, as IPv6 gains usage it isn't clear to me what will happen. Instead of somewhat less than 4 billion unique addresses, the new system has something on the order of 16 quintillion (billion billion) unique addresses (speaking in U.S. terminology, where billion = 1,000,000,000). In IPv6 every computing device could be given a permanent unique address and we wouldn't even come close to running out.

Help with Easy Group Transfer
In Y!GMF message 58371 Dean wrote: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/GroupManagersForum/conversations/messages/58371 (public archive, no membership needed) Do you happen to know if they're asking because they were too timid to just try it? Or did they run into some kind of snag? I made a Wiki page on the subject, but I haven't actually transferred a group myself. So the advice there is gleaned from what I've read. If you have more advice, or detailed descriptions, or screen shots along the way, perhaps we can collaborate on improving the page. /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Transfer-from-Yahoo-Groups Shal

case sensitivity of Group+SubGroup names on digest subject line
RichardTE wrote (6525 in beta@): /g/beta/message/6525 Interesting observation. And I think that provides the answer. I created a subgroup, /g/shalstest+camelCaseSubGroup and put you in it to receive the digest. Then posted a messsage. I'm predicting that the intercapitals will be preserved, but initial caps will be imposed in the digest Subject, as in: Shalstest+CamelCaseSubGroup Digest #1 That's based on the appearance of the breadcrumb line in the subgroup (viewing the Messages Thread View): Shalstest+CamelCaseSubGroup > Threads Shal /g/GroupManagersForum

Closing threads 4
Just looking through old posts and I had a question or two about threads ? It looks like threads don't automatically close. ?This must mean someone can add to an old thread a year or two later. ?Correct? If I don't want that, I must manually close them. ?Right? Perhaps a dumb question but I assume that subject lines from closed threads can be reused later. For example, if the subject is Malta, can someone else later start a new thread with the subject Malta?? Frances

group title vs. group email address, effects of changing both? 4
Hi all, I would like to get rid of the underscores in the title and email address of my main group (the title and email address are currently the same, and I'd like to keep it that way). I remember that in Y!G, even changing a couple of letters from lower to uppercase caused some upheaval in members' abilities to receive and send emails. What are the ramifications of changing a group title and/or email address here? Removing the underscores is not a huge deal, but I'd prefer to get rid of them. Thanks. J

possibly OT subject, unusual membership application process
J, I agree, his selective ability to respond seems suspicious. I might be inclined to boot him out again on that basis alone; since a response to the initial questionnaire is a requirement of the group and he hasn't complied. The generic name Fast Email Extractor seems to be associated with one or more products for collecting email addresses from web sites. Presumably the first step in a marketing (spam) campaign. That particular site seems to also offer lists of collected email addresses for sale. So the man may be a victim of that site, having had his email address collected from some other web site. Since you were able to find his address at multiple locations in a Google search it isn't unlikely that a list seller might have also. By the way, member management - including questions and advice about unusual or troublesome situations - is perfectly on topic here. But a reminder to everyone that GMF's archive is open to the public, so thank you for not posting any personal identifiers. Shal GMF Owner

searching on a member, and the @ sign 4
Can someone here outline how the @[membername] thing can be used? I know that as a group owner, I can click on it within a member's page and be taken to the member's profile. But can it be used to search on Groups.io members in general and find their profiles - not necessarily as a group owner? In fact, is there any ability to search for a Groups.io members in general, using their username or a portion of their username, from anything other than a member's page within the member list? Thanks for any info. If this ability is nonexistent, or nobody knows about it, I will post on beta.? Thanks. J

ads? 6
Has anyone noticed Grouos.io running ads? A couple of ads (or links to ads) have appeared below emails coming from group members via the group, but I'm not sure whether they're coming from the users' signature lines or Groujs.io or something else. If no answers here, I wil ask the group members in question . Thanks. J Sent from my iPhone

inactive member is bouncing 4
There was an entry in the activity log today that "email to [member xyz] is bouncing." This is the first such entry we've had. I checked the member's activity history and the only thing in it is one bounced email, which was sent today. The member joined more than one year ago, when we were still on yahoo, and has never posted.?I'm not sure what to do about this besides remove the member from the group. I'm not even sure I want to send him an email. I've virtually never corresponded with this person. Looking forward to thoughts, helpful hints or advice here. Thanks. J

Spam 12
I'm being deluged by spam to my yahoo list owner addresses. They're all the unpaid invoice threatening emails that I've read are either phishing attempts or contain links with ransom ware. I am careful of course but worried I might click on something by mistake. Just wondering if io group owner addresses are potentially open to these attacks even if less likely as io has fewer groups so far? Thanks, Louise Sent from my iPad

Copying from yahoogroups 2
I've been using PGOffline to archive messages in various Yahoo groups for a while already, and when doing a large number of messages the Yahoo system will cut me off after some unknown-to-me limit is reached. PGOffline provides a way to regulate the throttle and hopefully extend that limit. Does Groups.io run into that issue too when copying messages? Is there a throttle? Thanks, Scott Scott Bonacker CPA - McCullough and Associates LLC - Springfield, MO

Chat groups - Reply option 9
I have been ?absent from groups ?for ?more than 3 wks. On ?my return ?I found some change to ?group. io.? I ?normally ?reply via my email account to any messages. However because ?I had so many accumulated in the 3 wks or so I ?decided to delete all of them and ?visit the group page thread instead and choose which messages I wanted to respond to To my surprise if a topic ?has a long thread of messages ? I ?can't ?choose to reply to one of the threads.. The reply option is gone from each ?thread of messages. Ugh! vickie

Send to Sender ( [beta] Proposal for hiding email addresses feature)
Vickie, I decided to reply here in consideration of Mark's request in beta@ #6874 that we limit that thread to "how" without delving into what we will or won't use, or whether it's a good idea. /g/beta/message/6874 That's kind of a tough request to follow, especially when I introduced the question wondering which of three options would be best. Maybe we can hash it out here and bring a refined description back to beta@ In beta@ #6915 Vickie wrote: /g/beta/message/6915 With the possible exception of replies by email, I think what you've described is exactly what I intended by option B. I wrote: Here's an example of what I meant: John posts an item to the group. His message is posted in the group's messages section, and distributed to members by email according to their subscription settings (individual, digest, etc.). The only difference introduced by the Anonymous Posting option so far is that only John's name, not his email address, is revealed in his post; and that is true for other subscribers reading by email as well as for those reading by Groups.io's web site. Mary wants to contact John about the item. She goes to the web site and uses the Reply feature, clicking "Send to sender". In Mary's reply her email address is included normally (as the From and Reply-To address) in the message to John, and hence is revealed to John. John decides whether or not to reply to Mary. If he does, his email interface will include his address in his message to Mary in the normal way. After this point John and Mary are free to continue their off-list conversation as they please. Notably, if John chooses not to reply to Mary, neither she nor anyone else learns his email address. I think the additional thing that you want, which I didn't accomplish, was allowing Mary to contact John by way of her email interface. Instead my description forces her to the Groups.io site to do that. Call the above option B1, and what follows option B2. There is possibly a way to accomplish an off-list reply to an anonymous posting, and that's by taking a baby-step toward option C. Instead of a noreply address or other placeholder in group postings, Groups.io could insert something like what Mark proposed in the third bullet of his message #6797: John's posting could be from "[email protected]" (assuming John has set "John123" as his User Name in his profile). /g/beta/message/6797 But where Mark specified that any email to that address would be dropped, it could instead be forwarded to John's actual email address. That would allow Mary to reply via her email interface rather than the Groups.io site if she wishes. As before, her reply reveals her address to John, and Johns actual address is not revealed to Mary until and unless he decides to reply to Mary. Now B2 did require that John establish a User Name in his profile. That's probably a reasonable requirement, and it can be used as signifying his consent to have messages forwarded to him via this means (Just as in now signifies his consent to having people see his profile). Do either B1 or B2 make sense to you? Shal

Owl's been off the grid lately
Hey all, Just wanted to let you know I've been dealing with a lot of real life stuff, so not only am I way behind in here, but also in Beta. So I haven't had a chance to work on putting any documentation together for the Beta Manual concept. I apologize, this is just how my life seems to go these days. I don't mean to promise things I can't do, I really intend to get them done...so I'll see if things calm down and I can still work on it soon. Thanks in advance for understanding. Brenda
