A group for SERIOUS group owners
This GroupManagersForum is founded in the tradition of the GroupManagersForum ( https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/GroupManagersForum/conversations/messages/2 ) on Yahoo! Groups. Attachments are allowed and the judicious use of screen shots and other illustrations is encouraged. To prevent malicious attachments, avoid spam, off-topic messages, and certain kinds of spoofing, ALL messages sent to GMF are moderated. Despite these measures, be aware that the bad guys are clever so there's no guarantee that we'll always succeed; you are encouraged to be vigilant against any and all threats arriving via email. Your GMF moderators make no guarantees regarding the safety of emails arriving from this or any other Groups.io address. Don't post JUST to advertise your groups. Listing your group in your signature is perfectly acceptable, just make sure there's content in your post. Do post something about being a Groups.io group owner, moderator or member. What suggestions do you have for improving Groups.io? What works for growing your group? When is it a good idea to create an unlisted group? How do you manage the role of owner on multiple groups? How do you manage playing owner on one group and member on others? There is power in numbers. Ask "How to" questions: "How do you do...[function of your choice]?" We all have to learn somewhere Through the contributions of its members this group can become a powerful voice for education, quality, change and improvement in Groups.io -- provided we work and focus on that as our collective goal. -- Shal *HELP:* GMF Wiki - /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/home Official Help - /helpcenter Search GMF messages - /g/GroupManagersForum/topics Search by hashtag - click on the number of posts - /g/GroupManagersForum/hashtags

Change the " " identifier for this group?
3
I have a filter set in my email so that all messages with?" [GMF] " in the subject line go into a folder for the Yahoo GMF forum. ?
But, since this groups.io GroupManagersForum group uses the same" [GMF] " in the subject line of its emails, all of these messages also go into my Yahoo GMF folder. ?I can't think of any other filter that I could use so that all of the groups.io GroupManagersForum group messages will go into their own separate folder.
Would it be possible to change the [GMF] for this group to something like ?[GMF2] or ?[GMF-G] or whatever so I could filter all of this groups messages into its own folder apart from the Yahoo GMF folder?
Thanks.

unbanning

Hi.
Is there any technical way to unban my self.
Tried contact the / mod of the groups.
But they say I am banned, and heard through a third party.
They have not contacted me at all.
So, is there a way to unban my self.
Without the owner, and will never get unbanned by them.

A choice of two wikis
In the beta group Frances wrote:
Rather than ask Mark to open up Beta's wiki, which he may have reasons not to do, I realized I've got a couple other options. One of them is to clone my YahooGroupedia wiki for use with Groups.io. So that I've done:
http://groupsiopedia.pbworks.com/
The other is to start using GMF's wiki, which I've also done:
/org/groupsio/GroupManagersForum/wiki
I'm more familiar with editing PBworks, and I think it is more feature-rich (e.g. an automatically generated Table of Contents for a lengthy page), so that was my first inclination. But there's no denying the simplicity of having the Wiki access control be implicit in group membership.
One difference is that PBworks' wiki is visible to the public, where GMF's is not, and cannot be made so (there's no selection for "Public"). This has its plusses and minuses. For example, a tutorial on how to sign in to a Groups.io group would only be useful in a public wiki. There may be subjects that shouldn't be in a public wiki, but given that GMF has open membership, they probably shouldn't be here either. So at the moment the only advantage to GMF's wiki seems to be the convenience for GMF members (they don't have to obtain a PBworks account to edit the wiki, nor keep a bookmark or something to remember where it is).
Probably the most significant advantage of using GMF's wiki is "dogfooding" - that is, the more we use the native resource the better we'll understand it and how to use it in our own groups, and the better we will be able to report bugs and suggest improvements.
So my inclination is to eventually remove the Best Practices topic from Groupsiopedia, and reserve that wiki for topics that are more useful if they're in a public wiki. I'll try and remember to provide cross-links between the two when I do that.
Opinions?

removing accounts on groups.io
2
Hi.
Just out of curiosity a friend, asked me the other day, how does some one
remove their account from groups.io.
Is there an easy process.
Looked on the site, and I do not know the answer.
So, if say for example, a friend, signed up to groups,io, then for one
reason or another, did want to remove their account.
What's the steps they would have to do this.
Can this person do this as an individual.
Thanks.

Comment thread for Generic Guidelines

#codesofconduct
Do the [Generic Guidelines](/org/groupsio/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Generic-Guidelines) go too far? Not go far enough?
This is a thread to discuss ways to improve the Generic Guidelines, one of the example Codes of Conduct in GMF's wiki. Or, feel free to provide your own example with its own discussion thread.

Top update priorities?
2
I think we each have updates that we'd like to see implemented on this site. I'm not sure how Mark is setting priority for the suggestions he's received. I'd guess a cross between urgency and ease of implementation. I do check the Trello board regularly to see what's in the hopper. My current highest rated item would be a database function. What's yours?
There are definitely areas where I'd like to see tweaks, such as file size shown for Photos.
I'm very glad to see that he's not throwing a bunch of stuff out all at once. He makes a change, then tries to make sure that the bugs a squished before moving on to another item.

creating grops query
Hi.
If I create a group, and maybe can recommend other mods.
To help me out.
As did have some yahoo groups a few years ago, one, I was the only owner,
and was overwhelmed.
Then got shut down, could not keep up.
So my question is:
Can you recommend any good, reliable people, who I could trust to be
co-moderators, or co-owners.
And if I get owner or admin rights, does it just only apply to that group,
or the entire groups.io site.
And what's happens, if some one decides to create a group, and accidentally
picks a group, which has a current name.
What happens?
Does it give you an error, saying you cannot use that group name?
Just curious.
So.
Any ideas or suggestions.

Download Archives
2
Shal,
You mentioned in a post on Beta that it should be possible to import the downloaded archives into Thunderbird. I haven't checked into it much yet, but thought maybe you could offer a little insight to keep me from reinventing the wheel if you've done it. Local folder? Each group separate? Add-ons needed? Other tips?
Thanks,
Duane

questions about transferring a yahoo group to groups.io
9
Hi Shai,
Nice to see you over on this end.:-)
I'm on the verge of transferring my yahoo group over here. I've already created the group and I've discovered the email to [email protected], etc. I have a couple of questions:
1. After an automatic transfer, does the old yahoo group stay in existence, with all its members? Or does it disappear, or does anything happen to it? I'd like to maintain the old group until everything is sorted out.
2. ?Does groups.io have a search function for searching through posts?
3. It seems like the automatic transfer automatically creates an account for everyone, but requires them to create a password "the first time they sign in." What if they don't sign in? My group has many members who access the group exclusively through email. My understanding is that they will automatically start receiving, and be able to send, email to the new (automatically transferred) groups.io group without having to sign in. Is that correct?
Thanks!

group question
2
Hi. Was just wondering. What happens if a member, say hypothetical member a
has a beef with the admins, or owners, or the owners or the admins have a
beef, and ban him. The member a tries to communicate to the owner / admin /
moderator. Is it possible to take over the group or transfer ownership
without the owner's notice or permission?
Any ideas.

Moving Files and Photos
2
Hello,
I am in the process of setting up to move my sewing machine group from Yahoo to IO.? I see that when I am ready to make the make the switch IO will move my members and messages.? Now is there an easy way to move to all the files from and photos from Yahoo to IO?? I am still trying to get handle on how to do a database in IO using WIKI as well.? So any pointer or help there will be greatly appreciated also.
Thanks,

Intro
4
Hi Shal and all -
I figured I should join this group on 'the other side' as you referred to it. I'd like to see how the experiments go here. I'm not having much luck getting members to test the groups I've set up so far.
I'm a little concerned with the news coming out about Yahoo's future. I have a couple groups over there with extensive archives, and I think IO is in pretty good shape for what we really need. It would be nice to have the links, but if we can bring over the message archives through the transfer process, that would be the most critical. One think I hadn't thought of previously is the space available for messages. One group goes back to the days of onelist back in 1998. I'd hate to lose some of the archives because we exceeded storage space immediately. I can't find the space the message archives currently take up om Yahoo, but we've just passed 8500 messages.
That's enough noise for for now. Thanks!

Hashtag Question
3
I have a question about hashtags that was not addressed in the groups.io FAQ.
Is it possible to make it so that only moderators can populate the names of the available hashtags, i.e. users/members can only use a hashtag that has already been made available by the moderators or they have to ask a moderator to make a new hashtag?
I would like to limit the number of hashtags to a manageable and easily identifiable group of available hashtags. ?One of my concerns is that if users can make up their own hashtags there will be literally hundreds of misspelled, unintelligible, or just plain useless hashtags cluttering up an otherwise very valuable tool; ?at some point having an overabundance of hashtags will make hashtags more of an annoyance than the useful tool that it promises to be.

[excess quote trimmed by moderator]
2
Hi Shal,
Do you insert the "[excess quote trimmed by moderator]" manually? I
noticed that you use the Preformatted markup tag. I really like your
method.
I also clean up messages before approving/publishing. Those who trim
their quotes get unmoderated. Everyone else goes to the moderation
queue.

Probationary membership (was: [beta] "P" next to member name)

Are these two groups on basically the same topic?
If so, and if the giving group members are all also members of the chat group (or if that could be made a requirement) then perhaps the giving group could be a subgroup of the chat group. Then you haven't added a new members list, just changed the way they're organized.
