Is there a need for two owners?

They can even shut down the group! On Sat, Oct 26, 2019 at 5:17 PM Chris Jones via Groups.Io <chrisjones12=[email protected]> wrote: On Sat, Oct 26, 2019 at 11:06 PM, Dawson, Rosemary wrote: |
It is always safe to have multiple owners and moderators. Else the group may end up orphaned! Some people have two accounts with different email addresses in case something goes wrong with one email account. The second account is set to No Mail or Special Notices only.
However we have had some people trying to deal with long gone owners - dead or just gone - and it is a problem. (I make my husband an owner. I trust him!) Please note that I am not talking about email aliases. /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Profile-and-Email-Address-and-Merging-Accounts Frances -- FAQ on Moving from YahooGroups GMF Wiki: (unofficial) Help for members (and would-be members) and group managers |
Having multiple owners is a judgement call. I have been moderating a large group since 1995. It is now here. We have three owners. Each can be trusted with your life! There are pros and cons for more than one. I see it all; the time in yahoo groups. PROS-The owner leaves ,dies,is hospitalized for a length of time? whatever and who is left? A moderator that cannot do much of anything .This is happening in 2 groups I am a member of . No Owner and mod cant do much of anything another group owner died and no one is moderator ?It is best to have at least one more owner that has all the tools you have . BUT there has to be a trust . And a moderator .? CONS- they take your group from you?

But the main reason for multiple owners is succession planning if the original is incapacitated.? - RobertS

Would be nice to have an option to add another owner, but ONLY if it was possible to give that person full rights, with the EXCEPTION of being able to remove or change the rights of the ORIGINAL person that created the group.? |
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýWith the demise of YahooGroups many lists are discovering how much a missing owner impacts the future of a list. To transfer a list from YG at least a full moderator or an owner is needed.? However YG had changed moderator levels and responsibilities. Last year I tried to transfer a list with an absent owner but found that even though I had been a moderator for 17 years I did not have the authority. My moderator status had not been upgraded during YG changes.? The list had 1800 members, an absentee owner and two moderators on YG. The other moderator and I moved the list to groups.io January 2018, and then this summer the other moderator was killed in a traffic accident.? It is a very active list so I have added two full moderators so the list can continue without me.? If you have a large, active, popular list; a co-owner or a full feature moderator is a wise precaution.? But I know of other list owners who prefer the list to die with them.? Your call... ken clark www.shastasprings.com -- ken clark www.shastasprings.com |
It is good insurance to have multiple owners so that in worst case scenario the list does not become an orphan.
Giving ownership rights is a critical decision and you need to have 100% trust in the person. I am a moderator
of a group from 1995 and we always had at least two owners. After moving the list to GIO we know have three
owners and your can trust your life with each. Every group should address this issue now and make sure multiple
backup owners are there to protect long term survivability of the group.

Perhaps a new feature request (the request to be submitted to beta, probably in 2020) would be to promote a designated Moderator (or Moderators) to Owner, if no Owner has logged in 30 days (or some other defined time)...

I believe the subject originally came up 4 years ago in and got mingled in to the thread at 2 years ago.? A new topic, next year, is probably a good idea.? Hopefully something could be implemented that would satisfy everyone. In the case of an owner of a Premium group that pays money every month for their group, and that owner dies and their credit card is cancelled by say a spouse, would Groups.io support (Mark) allow a moderator or a member of that group to become the new owner if they took over the monthly payment of that group to keep it going?? I think support might do something like this to keep the income flowing, and besides what would it hurt.

Don,
In the case of an owner of a Premium group that pays money every monthThere currently is no succession mechanism implemented or policy stated. If there were a co-owner, or a moderator with the Billing permission, that person could take on the payments without need for support. My own opinion is that if your group is important enough to you that you chose to go to the Premium plan, it probably should be important enough to you to ensure you have one or multiple potential successors promoted in advance. I think support might do something like this to keep the incomeI don't know that the billing would factor in to whatever future mechanism or policy might be implemented. Until then that's definitely the kind of thing support would likely handle case-by-case. There are legal issues involved. It is not that simple if the owner dies.

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýThis stuff could get very complicated I think. So do it the right and straight forward way. Look for a trusted person that is registered as a co owner and you are out of trubble. This is not only the point with a group ownership, we sometimes miss in our daily live that it could get very complicated for someone that has to clean up when someone dies. That's the reason why I put all important informations in a encrypted database and share this with my buissiness partner, he is doing the same. You don't know what can happen tomorrow. Isidro

The 'owner' can be just as a nominee. In a group which has been around since 2000, I am one of the 'owners' here. But the group's real owner is a non profit tax exempt 501c3 organization. To protect the interests of the group, now we have three owners so adequate redundancy is there. We have witnessed groups and websites orphaned when the owner dies unexpectedly.
?
So this issue need to be addressed seriously.
