Admin - Members - Edit e-mail Address #changememberemail #membersemail #memberemail #editmemberemail #changeemail

Hello Again,

My group migrated from Yahoo fine. I have a member whose e-mail address has changed. I can go to the Admin, Members section of the group. I can open the members information page and I can enter his new e-mail address. When I click save at the bottom of the page, I get a message (in red) "That email address is already registered" and the e-mail address in the Email box reverts to the old e-mail address. The member is using the new w-mail address in our? club "test" group? How to I as Owner or Moderator change a members e-mail address in the migrated group? Going forward, how do members edit their own information? Also, as I understand it, this is a community help site, how do I request help from Groups.io employees working support? Thanks again loads.

Cheers,
Scott H.

As far as groups.io is concerned, those two email addresses are two different people. If you had changed the email address before he subscribed to the "test" group using the other one, you probably wouldn't have gotten the error message.

? How to I as Owner or Moderator change a members e-mail address in the migrated group?
If the email address the subscriber is changing to is not already in use, you can update it as you attempted to do. If it's already registered, you cannot.?

Going forward, how do members edit their own information?
That depends on what "information" they need to edit. Account information can be found at?/account. Subscription information can be found at?/g/GROUPNAME/editsub.

In this case, you will probably want to have the subscriber himself merge the two accounts. Instructions can be found as the last entry of this wiki page:?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Profile-and-Email-Address-and-Merging-Accounts

Also, as I understand it, this is a community help site, how do I request help from Groups.io employees working support?
You can send an email to [email protected]. However, GMF should continue to be your first stop for help. It makes no sense to bother support with an issue that can be readily answered by an experienced peer.

Regards,
Bruce

I think another way to solve this is to delete the member's membership and then Direct Add that person as a new member with the new email address. ? I think I have done this, and it worked.

i thought I learned before is that when you see the "address already registered" means that person is using that new address in another groups.io group. ?Hence, my approach above wirks.

Ann -- Good point...IF ownership of content (messages, photos, etc) is not an issue. If it's important to maintain ownership of content currently held under both email addresses the only good path forward is to merge them.

Bruce

Hello,
I am the owner of 1 group and moderator of another - both Groups are free and I have full privileges in both -? and for the life of me I can't figure out how you , as Scott said, "go to the Admin, Members section of the group. I can open the members information page and I can enter his new e-mail address."
I have poked every button I can think of and I can only see their email, not edit it.
Also, Ann stated "and then Direct Add that person as a new member with the new email address." and I can't figure out how to do that either.

I have a potential member who can't seem to get his email correct and I can't figure out how to "fix" his membership.

We need more information!
Are both groups premium groups? You can't Direct Add members to a free group.
Do you have moderator privileges to view the Members (not directory), Invite and Activity?

The simplest way is to delete the old subscription and send him an invitation at the new one.

So the only way to add members to a free group is to invite them or have them use the email subscription option?

?
They could send ?a blank email to:?[email protected]
  • (change GROUPNAME to your group name - see your homepage)
  • ?
  • Or they could visit your group home page and click on that link.
Or you can invite them.

Or point them to the home page of the group and tell them to click Join this Group

Thanks, Frances and Nivard.? I am dealing with very unsophisticated?users.? I had been hoping I could collect their info and batch add them.? Looks like I will have to invite the initial group of testers and then have them use the email subscription route. I don 't want them to have to go to the website - EVER.

June, whyever not? Our groups are not just lists. People can use them as forums, you can provide a calendar for their use, upload documents and images and more. Unsophisticated users manage to use Facebook, which is about a thousand times more complicated than Groups.io.

I agree that we *can* use the groups as lists, but even those who like email lists want to be able to mute topics sometimes, for instance. That requires visiting the homepage for the group or at least /messages.

Once you have all your ducks in a row, you could upgrade to Premium for one month ($20) and Direct Add everyone.? After that month, they would need to use the alternate subscription methods, but it might save some headaches up front.
