Photo Move

Yes, save it to your hard drive, then upload it to the new group. That presupposes that the intention is to set up a new group and close down an old one, which may be correct but equally well may not. In the absence of "further and better particulars" I have a concern about the ethics of moving photos from one group to another unless the originators of the photos have agreed to the move. Specifically see Terms of Service / Conditions of Use / User Conduct Para 1. 1. (i), possibly 1. 4. (iv) and the entire section about Intellectual Property Rights. Chris |
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýChris, Any why else would one move an image from one group to another?? The only other reason I can think of is that the image was posted in the wrong group or something, and it needs to be moved to the right place, that's one of the admin things owners/admins do; that can also include deleting an uploaded image and nobody can do anything about it, the minute someone uploads a file to the group's site, they are losing a bit of control over it, same as putting it out in the Wild.Wild.West.? I do agree the admins should communicate with the image uploaders though, but I think your concern about ethics is overblown, and not really applicable in this case. Cheers, Christos |

Why else would one ask the question the way the OP did then??Sorry, but the way the original question was posed makes it impossible to infer any particular reason for wanting to move a photo. ?the minute someone uploads a file to the group's site, they are losing a bit of control over it, same as putting it out in the Wild.Wild.West.?Losing a bit of control is one thing; losing all control over it (as per your Wild Wild West) is another matter entirely. I do agree the admins should communicate with the image uploaders though, but I think your concern about ethics is overblown, and not really applicable in this case.Clearly I hope my concerns are inapplicable in this case, but please bear in mind that as written the intent might be to move a photo from a group where its originator is a member to another group where he or she is not a member, and for whatever reason actively does not want to be a member. You cannot say that my concerns are not really applicable in this case because you have no more idea of what the OP wants to do than I have. My point is that anyone wishing to relocate a photo (other than between albums in an archive) should proceed with caution and try to obtain the agreement of the photo's originator. If that agreement is withheld then IMHO it would be wrong to move it. (Perhaps perversely, it would then be OK to delete it!) If a group becomes like the Wild Wild West it can only be because the group's owners and moderators have allowed it to become so, or even caused it themselves. Chris |

Can this be done by album or do I need to download each photoYou can use the "Export Group Data" button at the top of the Settings page to get them all at once.? They'll be sorted by album and there will be a json file for each with the description and such.? There's not a way to import that though, so still much manual labor. ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýGene, >>> I am relatively new to this so
forgive my lack of knowledge. No problem at all, we were there one time as well, but giving
more info upfront about your query/problem (like you did in this
reply) can help get more tailored answers. >>> The photos are contained in multiple albums. I want to move all albums to the new group. Can this be done by album or do I need to download each photo (I have 681), save it and then upload them into new albums? I was in the middle of writing up the same thing Duane already posted, so what he said; but I wanted to add, if you don't care about preserving the description field (for album or image) in the new group, or preserve ownership, it won't be that much work, just start going folder (album) by folder, copy and paste folder name (album title), and do a mass upload of all the album images; unless if you have a ton of albums with 1-2 images in them, it shouldn't take long.? BUT, if you do want to preserve the description, then like Duane said, lots of work, as while you can still mass-upload them per album, you still have to go through each uploaded one, open its local json file, copy the description in there, edit the uploaded one and and paste it there. (along with setting the correct owner - I'm presuming members are also being moved/are moving themselves to the new group) It would be nice if one dropped one or more images AND their associated json file(s) in the upload box GIO would accept it and use them to populate the fields, but it doesn't.? Maybe a beta suggestion? (it may already have been suggested) Cheers, Christos |
I must be doing something wrong. I did an export of group data (photos). I got an email with a link to the zip file. I unzipped the file and got files and .json. I created a photo album in the new group. I tried to do an add a file from the unzipped files to the new album It tells me, "
Invalid type for file "Coop Grain Storage". Only "image" files are supported.". |

Assuming they actually are JPEGs, you need to add a jpg file extension to each one,?as Duane previously said.?At that point you should be able to upload them to the Photos area. Why? Recognizing file type automatically without an providing an extension (or some other metadata) requires opening the file, which is a slow process. Although some OS's (iOS is one) will recognize file type without an extension, whatever groups.io is running on (probably Linux) is not one of them.?
