Yahoo Group Suddenly Comes To Life
I guess with the ongoing stay-at-home restrictions, many groups have become much busier. I referred to this previously as one of the few bright spots in an otherwise especially bleak time.
A couple times over the past six weeks messages posted in an old Yahoo Group --that was moved to io last November -- suddenly began appearing in my inbox. Apparently a few members had not gotten the word that the group moved six months ago. One of the respondents is someone I know, someone who DID move to the new group and has been fairly active there. I emailed him to ask, 'Why would they be posting the messages in the Yahoo group, do you think they don't know the group moved?" The down side is, there were images attached to some of the messages and those images were not stored by Yahoo. Also, the Yahoo Group is extremely slow while the io group is running about fifteen messages a day. Any members who have not gotten the word on the move are missing all that. To my surprise, at first the gentleman I contacted was baffled as to what I was talking about. It turned out, when he read and replied to the messages he never noticed they were from Yahoo. On the group's old Yahoo homepage it says the group has been "abandoned in place." I'm just a member of this group, and not a very active one (though I enjoy reading the messages), so I'm reluctant to do anything other than to have contacted the man I know. Has anyone else seen anything like this happen? tommy0421 |

Regarding the Yahoogroups and messages, since they gutted everything out of the site, all the ability to stop messages, or even shut down those automatic messages set by the old calendar (that no longer exists) still will appear in new emails.? The ability to Delete the group is still there.
Under Groups Settings over there, there's a Messages Reply To: and choices of All Members, Sender, Group Owner, Leave Group and All Members and Sender.? Not sure it that means you can choose Group Owner and anyone who tries to post to the group - it only goes to the Group Owner so you can tell them to not post there.
That's all I see about what's left of the sites in Yahoogroups.
Sincerely,
Rli@...

I think the old owners of the suddenly active Yahoo group still have ownership rights. What I did with a couple of my old Yahoo groups (that had been moved to io in 2018) was remove all the members except for myself and one moderator. Or the Groups.io transfer agent. Why not just delete the group? Sentimentality? I came close to deleting a couple of them but...I just couldn't do it. LOL
Actually, I believe in never say never. Who knows what may be in store down the road. tommy0421 |

I shuttered as many as I could, and those that I couldn't shutter, I configured to require moderator approval, where possible. On one of the lists I moderate, the owner went missing almost twenty years ago. Nobody knows anything about the owner. The anti-spam measures I set up, used to work. However, with the changes Oath made last year, new subscribers can spam to their heart's content. All I can do, is send a message every fortnight, advising the remaining subscribers that the list migrated a decade ago, and that Oath has made it impossible for me to moderate the list. jonathon |

Rli,
Under Groups Settings over there, there's a Messages Reply To: andNo. It means the same thing there as here: it adds a Reply-To field to the header of outgoing messages so that replies by email (the only kind now) are directed as specified. It won't affect a new message sent to the group's posting address. Shal -- Help: /helpcenter More Help: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Even More Help: Search button at the top of Messages list |

jonathon,
The anti-spam measures I set up, used to work. However, with theWe had a similar situation in one of my Yahoo Groups. What we did was change the group to "Anyone can apply to join this group, moderator approval is required" (it had been set for moderator approval NOT required). This doesn't prevent a spammer who becomes a member from posting, but it at least stopped the "drive-by" spammers who would join and spam. Except in the couple of cases where they fooled me and I approved their membership... Sigh. Two other old Yahoo groups I belong to have also had occasional messages posted after the group had moved here. In both a moderator replies fairly quickly, "Sorry! This group has closed. We moved the group -- including archives -- to Groups.io with the same group name. Here is the url- xxx.com. Please send future messages to that group."
What I did, when I moved any of my groups to Groups.io, was leave the Yahoo group set to everyone is moderated. That way, when someone sent a message to the old YG! group, I would delete the message and then email them and make the same explanation as above. Almost without exception, the person would email me back and say it had been a mistake. That they sent the message from their email and the auto-address had filled in the wrong url. They'd also usually then delete the Yahoo address from their email address book. tommy0421 |

Personally, I think there is a good reason to keep the old group, even if it's been gutted.? Many people learn about a group from something someone posted on a website or in another forum many years ago.? Leaving the old group gives them guidance to find the new group. If you delete the old group, they can't find the new group at its new location -- unless they embark on a process of discovery with no roadsigns to help them.? I like leaving behind roadsigns. Andy |

New people coming to the old group - that is one I never heard or thought about Actually I think the old group needed someone to approve new members I do not think new people can now still reach the old group?
?
So far I have sent out a message to the old group every three months or so that we have moved So far it has only brought almost inactive members of the old group to the next one But the owner of the old group literally being deceased we can also not close the old group?
?
But unless new messages at the old group occur it is gone? anyway
?
Best regards

Jan,
New people coming to the old group - that is one I never heard orEven if there are no members and no messages, the Yahoo Group's Info/About page can stand as a "we've moved" billboard to direct visitors on to the new home of the group. Jan,
Our old Yahoo Groups' owner is AWOL since 2010.? These are setup to allow anyone to just join and post.? No moderators either.? We moved 4 groups into 1 here at GIO. In the past month, I've gotten 5 new messages off those Yahoo listserv groups.? I've successfully rerouted 3 of those folks via a posting on those Yahoo listserve groups to join us on GIO.? Not sure where the other 2 people went. We have no ability to update the ABOUT page on Yahoo as this is an OWNER function.? I do like the fortnight notification going out to those Yahoo listserve groups now.? It seems to be our only method of recourse. -BMaverick |

Not all Yahoo groups still work for email only. Mine (the one I transferred here) does NOT. That's a major reason we moved it.

Thank you Ours was not a group you could directly join but you needed permission I asked around and we do have a moderator who is stil receiving the emails sent to the old group and redirects them to the new one Best regards Jan Op ma 11 mei 2020 18:34 schreef BMaverick <bmaverick@...>: Jan, |
