Peter -- I agree this would be my preference and is generally how we handle things in GMF.?As Glenn also mentioned, my main group supports a parent organization for which each member has paid dues. I also had a board of directors to answer to; in fact, some of the board members were the worst offenders when it comes to drifting off-topic.

Thus, I've never had the luxury of being heavy-handed; and over time my frustration built to the point that I handed the reins over to someone else.

Anyway, my previous response (and I suspect those of others) was on the premise that?Brenda has a far better understanding of her situation than we do. If a group owner isn't willing to go through the warn/moderate/ban/reinstate cycle I think they can be forgiven for that.?

I suspect that mcmurrayhatchery.com is using gmail services.? If so, then someone needs to notify Groups.io support that the headers for that domain should be rewritten to prevent this from happening.? Another possibility is that rackspace.com is their email service and is the real culprit.

member email sent to spam with dmarc=fail

APPPA Coordinator

I have two lists that I manage and right now one of members is failing to be delivered on both lists. the messages are getting flagged as spam by Gmail.?

when I view the message in the spam folder, Gmail put a message up that said the sender wasn't able to be verified.?

When I view the headers of that message, I notice two lines that say dmarc=fail. I suspect this is the problem. When I receive email from this person directly, everything is delivered correctly. I also currently don't see other senders getting identified as spam and not being delivered. So, my questions are: Where does the fix lie (the senders email records or on Groups.io) and what needs to be done?

Re: not accepting new members

I noticed you said that the group the individual comes from is a nasty and divisive group and that the person "wants to" bring negativity into your group.

Are you sure about the second assertion?

I'm a moderator but not the owner of a rather active group, but my role is a standby role. The main owner actually does all the moderation.?

We had one active member who kept going off on political tangents, and those and religious tangents can kill a group and so are not allowed. (The subject of the group is neither political nor religious.) So he was warned, then moderated, and finally banned. Later he asked to rejoin and was readmitted and there has not been a repetition.?

The person in question is tremendously knowledgeable about the subject of the group, and despite his past missteps he is now a valuable member whom I make it a point to read whenever he posts.?

I very much admired the way the group owner handled the situation.?

Seems to me you HAVE a reason, but there is no need to share it with the offensive person.

ibam sorry but your style is not a match. I am going to decline your contraction in our group

Unsolicited Log In Link emails

A member has reported to me that she has been receiving unsolicited Log In Link emails from Groups.io several times a day.? She forwarded to me the one received yesterday afternoon (copied below), and it does indeed appear to be the standard message sent when using the Email me a Link to Login option.? Checking the Email Delivery History for her member subscription last night, I confirmed that her Most Recent Successful Delivery was that Link to Log In message.? Checking again this afternoon, I confirmed that another Log In Link message was successfully delivered this morning.?

I am awaiting her response to confirm that she has not been trying to log in via that option, but I feel quite sure she is not initiating the requests several times a day.? I have asked her several other questions to gather as much additional information as I can, anticipating some of the details GMF helpers might ask, including whether her email has recently been hacked.? Seeing the second message sent this morning, I decided not to wait for her reply to ask if anyone else has had reports of similar messages.? A search of GMF messages shows that Frances received a similar unsolicited Log In Link message in April, but I see nothing mentioned since then.

TIA for any suggestions.? I haven't reported this to Mark yet.? And I suppose if it is just someone using her email address trying to get into Groups.io there is no real concern, other than the annoyance of her receiving the multiple messages each day.

Hello,

Here is a link to log into your Groups.io account:

Login Link (removed actual link)

It will expire in 24 hours, on 06/21/2023 at 4:53pm PDT, but you'll stay logged in for 30 days, unless and until you log out.

If you did not ask for a login link to be sent to you, please ignore this email.

Cheers,
The Groups.io Team

Re: not accepting new members

If you need a "reason," tell him or her that you're not accepting new members.

You can then change your mind after rejecting him to accept new members. :-)

It's much less stress to keep him out than to moderate all his posts.

The way I see it, groups are a benevolent dictatorship, not a democracy. You can accept or reject anyone you wish and don't owe anyone an explanation.

Unless, of course, there is some rule to the contrary. For example, in one of my groups, there is the requirement that everyone is a member of a particular organization. When denying people, I usually add something to the effect of "not on membership list".

Best,

Glenn

Go to Amin -> Settings and look for the Cover Photo button on the upper right. Click on it and fill in the info. Note that there are different places to set the photo as seen on homepage and on the icon displayed on the groups.io main page.

A lady in two of my groups can't get into groups.io.? She forgot her password and thinks she can click on Forgot Password, get the link, and then have it take her right to where she can change her password.? She's caught in the loop.?

Is she going to her account (upper right of screen) and resetting the password (and then click on the Change Password button), right after getting onsite using the link in the Forgot Password email?? One has to do that otherwise they will keep getting asked to log in and having to click on the Send me a link button to log in.

How can I get her deleted from groups.io so we can start all over as a new member??

This won't help, even as a new member she'd still have to log in and you'll run into the same exact problem again.

She's not very computer literate so I'll be signing her into Groups.io with a temporary password once I can and give her the password so she can go change it to whatever she wants.? Plus she's trying to do this from her cell phone and gets frustrated very easily.? That's why I'm trying to set it up for her.

The only way to do this for her would be to coordinate a time when she's available, and:

1. Log out from GIO.
2. In the login page enter her email and click on Send me a link.
3. When she gets the link email, have her forward it to you and also send you what password she wants, because more than likely if she's having problems setting it herself, if you set up a temporary password for her more than likely she'll run into the same problem trying to change that one.
4. On your computer click on the link and you'll now log in as her.
5. Set the new password, save, log out.
6. Log in as her to make sure it works and then log out again.
7. She needs to log in herself next, and it should be fine after that.? Have her rejoin the two groups, or DirectAdd if you have that option, or send her an invite.
8. To test if her phone is deleting the login cookies, or preventing them from being saved, have her next fully close & unload the browser from memory or however her phone does it (but don't log out first), then reopen the browser and go to .? She should be presented with the Your Groups page, if not and it's the login screen again, then her phone settings or phone browser setup is not saving cookies, and that would need to be changed so it does, at least for groups.io.

Cheers,
Christos
