Re: best way to limit email replies

So the rest of the responses are pulled and not pushed?Yes, you can make this behavior a group default...but you can't force your subscribers to keep it. Go to Admin>Settings and click the Default Sub Settings button at the top.?Examine the Message Selection section on the resulting page. Based on your proposal above, I believe you would want to check the "Following only" and "First Message Also" boxes. Subscribers with this setting would then receive the first message of each topic, but would not receive any subsequent ones unless they chose to follow it (by clicking a link in the message footer). These settings will be automatically applied to all new subscribers, and will persist until such time that they decide to change it to something else. I suppose if subscribing wasn't an option, maybe some sort of "only view on the web forum" sort of situation would be fine, but it'd be great if email could be maintained somehow instead of just forum browsing. If you don't want emails sent, in this same section check the "No Email" or "Special Notices Only" boxes (instead of Following Only, etc). Again, the individual subscriber will be able to change to something else later, if he wants to. If you want all communication to be one-way with no Subscriber replies at all, you can set up your group as an Announcement group (Admin>Settings>Spam Control). Hope this helps, Bruce? -- The system Help is your friend.??/static/help |
Earthlink is again bouncing Groups.io emails
Folks: fyi ... looks like Earthlink is again bouncing emails from Groups.io. I had to unbounce myself (a group owner) from Groups.io due to this situation.
I've sent a message to the Groups.io support team -- as well as another unblock request to Earthlink. Regards. Junu Kim |
best way to limit email replies
J Bills
Hi all - new to groups.io and did a quick search but haven't turned up an answer to this.? I have a group that has a "delicate" membership where it's all professionals and - in short - people I don't want to bother very often.? I want to keep the asks and traffic low to this group because I can't risk any unsubscribes.
Is there a combination of settings that would allow me to basically "push" an initial email (new topic) out to the list via email, but then have any replies or continued chatter be "subscription only" where you wouldn't get any of the replies unless you specifically sign up or subscribe to the thread?? So the rest of the responses are pulled and not pushed? I suppose if subscribing wasn't an option, maybe some sort of "only view on the web forum" sort of situation would be fine, but it'd be great if email could be maintained somehow instead of just forum browsing. Any tips for me here?? Is there a clever way to set this up? Thanks so much -Jay |

If you must have this behavior, your only option would be to expand the canvas of every photo to a 1:1 aspect ratio (centering the image and padding with some neutral color) before uploading. Most image editors will do this readily enough, but I've not encountered any that can automatically do it to a group of photos. You may be stuck doing them one by one. Re: member not confirmed
Sarah, Some members claimed, even after resending the invitation several times, that they never received it and couldn't find it in spam. (Email address is correct). I believe that the Invite page tracks delivery failures. So if Hotmail had actually rejected the invitations those would be listed with some form of failure rather than "sent". Which makes it mysterious why the invitees don't find the invitation, not even in Spam. I don't know Hotmail, is it possible that it would deliver to a different folder, such as Trash? So, I asked some to just go to the main group page and "apply to join this group" themselves, which some did. That should do the trick, for any of them that receive and respond to the confirmation email sent by Groups.io Is there something else the NC could be signifying that I'm not thinking of, but can fix on my end? No. It means simply that they haven't yet confirmed that they own the address and want to join the group (by receiving and responding to the confirmation email). If someone applies to join the group while currently having an unaccepted invitation, does the system reconcile the two and add the member? No. The system will treat the application separately. If your group has Restricted Membership it means they should show up on your Pending Members list. An invitation bypasses the approval step, so if they accept the invitation they go straight to the Members list. Accepting an invitation also confirms their email address and their desire to join the group. Re: member not confirmed
I'm having a similar issue. I'm switching over from a Mailman list for my organization, so I invited all the members to the new list.
Some members claimed, even after resending the invitation several times, that they never received it and couldn't find it in spam. (Email address is correct). So, I asked some to just go to the main group page and "apply to join this group" themselves, which some did. Now, I have two members who are "not confirmed" and I've tried the "Send Confirmation Email" multiple times. They also claim to not be receiving THOSE emails. I can't send a "new" invitation because they've already been invited, only re-send invitations. Both of the problem email addresses are Hotmail addresses, but I have others with Hotmail email addresses who managed to accept the invitation just fine. At this point, I could try deleting them and starting fresh again with new invites, but I'm not sure that I should expect anything different to happen this time. Any suggestions? Is there something else the NC could be signifying that I'm not thinking of, but can fix on my end? If someone applies to join the group while currently having an unaccepted invitation, does the system reconcile the two and add the member? Just not sure the best way to proceed here. |

IMHO the Send Confirmation Email tab is slightly misleading; it is a further request to the applicant to send the necessary confirmation to get rid of the NC status flag. I have tried it once or twice with absolutely no response from the person concerned. :( Chris |

I most often use Thunderbird, so there I see the same as you. Thanks for all your replies. Yes, unfortunately, although Thunderbird has many problems, I'm stuck with it. So, from a Thunderbird user's perspective, Google Groups behaves as Wrong is in the eye of the group admins.Yes, but an ordinary user doesn't know about all this list-specific technical stuff. An ordinary user thinks that "Reply All" should behave the same way it always does, i.e. (in my view) by sending the reply to everybody whose addresses are visible in the "heading" part of the mail. (I mean heading, not header.) But for a discussion group such as GMF I think it is more generally useful for the simple Reply to go to the group, even if that means that the receiving member has to do some work (copy/paste) to reply off-list to the sender.Yes, I don't think it's a problem for GMF since GMF members are presumably tech-savvy enough to know how to overcome such obstacles. == FWIW, the reason I was contemplating forcing HTML on all users was so that we could have a relatively safe way of explaining to non-tech-savvy users where they can find the sender's e-mail address, independent of what e-mail program they use. The simplest alternative for forcing HTML on my members is if the sender's e-mail address can be added to the footer of plaintext e-mails as well. I actually don't care about the fact that Reply All etc works different in different programs -- it's to be expected. I was drawn into this conversation but in reality it's not really something that interests me. Samuel |

Re: Reply vs Reply All
Samuel,
I changed topics, but thought I should address some of this directly (if belatedly), even though this covers some of the same ground. What do the "Reply" and "Reply All" buttons in your mail program do/g/GroupManagersForum/message/15148 I most often use Thunderbird, so there I see the same as you. In Gmail's web interface the default (top arrow button) is Reply, below the message are buttons for Reply and Reply All, both of which operate the same as Thunderbird (to the group's posting address). I believe all of those results are consistent with the fact that in GMF the Reply-To header field contains the group posting address, and there is no List-Post field (which is probably why Reply List comes up blank in Thunderbird). With mails from a Google Group, however, option 1 sends the reply toI don't have a current subscriptions in any Google groups. I'll speculate that that group has its Reply To configured for Sender (hence 1), and does include a List-Post field (hence 3), and 2 is a consequence of 1 and 3. So, from a Thunderbird user's perspective, Google Groups behaves asWrong is in the eye of the group admins. If GMF's Reply To setting were set to Sender then you'd see the behavior you describe for the Google group. But for a discussion group such as GMF I think it is more generally useful for the simple Reply to go to the group, even if that means that the receiving member has to do some work (copy/paste) to reply off-list to the sender. It would possibly be handy if Groups.io would include the List-Post field in groups with Reply To set to Group. And it did for a while, but that triggered what I consider a bug in Thunderbird, leading to much more confusion. So the change was backed out.
