Re: Excel Files on iPhone

I appreciate the response. I didn't run into this problem on Yahoo though. I'm not going to pretend to understand the differences between the two sites, just wondering if this is something that can actually be fixed by groups.io.

Re: Direct Add without Email to User #addmembers

Dr. Denver Fox

Why not just keep the "Direct Add" folks in a document, and copy and add them at the moment that the new forum is going to be active?

Re: Direct Add without Email to User #addmembers

Dan,

In the transfer tool, there is a check box that prevents emails going to the transferred members.

Is that still available? It is no longer in the initial list of checkboxes.
?
I want to do the same thing with my direct add.

You cannot.

You can add content to the message, but you can't eliminate the message entirely nor even edit the boilerplate that surrounds the customized section.
?
All members will be notified on the day we officially switch from Yahoo to Groups.IO so they will be notified at the right time.

It looks like Groups.io believes that "the right time" is when they are added. A mandatory part of the "You've been added" messages (for both transfers and Direct Add) is the opt-out link. I imagine that is there for abuse mitigation.

Direct Add without Email to User #addmembers

PACC Forums Admin

HI,

I'm trying to get a group transferred from Yahoo and clean up the membership in the process.? Until that clean up is done, I don't want to confuse people with messages from Groups.IO as they have not yet been informed about it.? It seems that over the years, many members of our club have never gotten onto Yahoo so were not included in the Transfer.? I want to now, do a direct add of those people.??

In the transfer tool, there is a check box that prevents emails going to the transferred members.? I want to do the same thing with my direct add.? In other words, I want to add a list of new people to both the Main group and one subgroup without them receiving an email about being added.? ?All members will be notified on the day we officially switch from Yahoo to Groups.IO so they will be notified at the right time.

How do I keep them from getting a notice when I do the direct add?

Thanks -- Dan?

Thanks again. I started the transfer using the form. I hope the agent will see my request to move "FT-ONE".?

I dont know how to let him know the name of the group.

Go to the Easy Yahoo Group Transfer page. You can get there from the Easy Group Transfer link at the bottom of any Groups.io page, then click the Yahoo Group Instructions button.

Read and follow the instructions. In particular, in Step 1 you click the green Start New Transfer button at the bottom of the page. That button will take you to the form where you specify which Y!Group is to be copied into which Groups.io Group, and what parts of the Y!Group to copy.

GMF's Wiki page Transferring from a Yahoo Group is incomplete, but offers additional tips and ideas.

I am not certain if I am allowed to give the name of my Y!Group here on this forum.

You are, but it is not necessary. When deciding what to post keep in mind that GMF's messages are public, so anything you post here can be found by anyone on the internet and will be indexed by web search engines.

What are my alternatives?

If your Y!group's Who can join is not set to By invitation only then the transfer agent may join (or request to join) the group without the invitation. Watch also for a notification (from your Y!Group) of a member joining (or needing approval).

Not in this context.

The ability to edit emails is available even for Basic groups, if you establish that in the Settings. Only in Premium groups can you edit a subscriber's email delivery address for them.

How do I know? I asked the same question as Noah did a couple months ago. The meaning of the features on the Pricing page is pretty ambiguous.

In addition to the unfamiliarity of the whole thing, they are afraid of breaking something and the whole world will fall down.

"Edit email" also means edit messages, I think. Or is that on a different page?

I have one group that uses messages as archives to store and find community information so members are allowed to edit their messages so they will be correct.

On another list, a discussion list, people often claim to have said or to not have said things others want to confirm. Members of that list are not allowed to edit messages.

It¡¯s working so far.

I thought it was not supposed to be allowed, but maybe it is possible that the member ended up with one address listed as an alias of the other anyway - despite them being listed as separate accounts also.
It is possible as long as there are two email addresses. You sign in separately for the two accounts. I have some people with 3 or 4 addresses. All are set to no mail except the one they want to receive from. They do it because the are in work environments where they can¡¯t (or don¡¯t want to) receive email but want to send messages from that work address. You don¡¯t have to use an alias.

We deleted the gmail account, BUT I contacted the tech person at the subscriber¡¯s professional address and discovered that she does have her professional address forwarded to her gmail address¡ªshe didn¡¯t understand that. I just can¡¯t get her to understand why gmail thus becomes the sender.

She doesn¡¯t have an alias ¡ª neither of us know how to set one up.

How would an alias work? And would it help? I¡¯m trying to get her to use a client on her computer like Apple Mail or Outlook. Then all her mail would be in one place but be able to use separate addresses.

Re: Starting the Easy Transfer process + Bouncing Members. . . . #transfer

That's kinda what I was remembering, Doug, but I just wasn't fully clear on whether the person inititating the transfer needed to de-select 'bouncing members' somehow before starting the transfer process.

Thanx!

No...in principle, a subscriber "owns" his profile. But I do understand. I have one person who decided to upload a TIFF file for his profile picture. Although this image fails to render in most browsers he seems uninterested in fixing it.?

You can alter the information in their entry in the Member's List, though, including Moderator notes.

This is one of those things that needs better explanation in the system Help. I think the answer to your question is yes, but you're using the wrong terminology; the Member's List and the Directory are not the same thing.

The Member's List is found under the Admin section and is used to manage subscriptions (send +owner messages, view a subscriber's activity history, handle bouncing accounts, etc.). The Directory is an index of subscriber profiles, and when activated, appears on the group's main menu (along the left side). All subscribers appear in the Member's list, along with their email addresses and possibly other personal information. As previously mentioned, a subscriber will not have an entry in the Directory unless they create a profile and opt in (or if the owner is logged in and viewing it).

If you go to Admin->Settings->Privacy, the second drop-box determines visibility for the Directory (profiles) and the third is for the Member's List (subscriber management). I suggest making the former visible to Subscribers and the latter visible to owners and moderators only. I also suggest that all owners create a second account for themselves using a second email address so they can see what their group looks like and how it performs without their special Owner permissions.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Can moderators/owners load member's profile pictures

Is there?a way for moderators to upload/store profile pictures in member's profiles? ?I've looked and searched and can find nothing on the topic. ?We have a group which includes some technically non-savvy members and would like to have the moderators be able to help them do this. ?(It's better than waiting until their grandkids are around to help them.)

I didn't find much info on either except in the beta group, but I'll try to explain them.? (BTW, you can read posts there without being a member, )

When someone creates a new account on Groups.io, they are sent an email with a link to click on that verifies (confirms) that email address.? Sometimes this goes to the spam folder or is otherwise overlooked.? On a Premium group, you can confirm an email address for that person.? On a Basic group, you can send them another Confirmation email.

Edit Email means that you can edit someone's email address for them.? It's simple enough for them to do it themselves, but we all have members that aren't comfortable using a computer, so this can save time.

Someone else may have already posted an answer, but here goes.

In the transfer process, If I remember correctly, bouncing members are not transferred from Yahoo to Groups.io.

G'Mornin' Shal, Bruce,

When starting the transfer process there are severl selections which can be selected or de-selected, one of which is 'membership'.

My question is:? Is there some way to leave the bouncing members behind?? Our CRL membership count is some 7,000+/- and a significant portion of those are bouncing.

So, I have forgotten; does the Groups.io transfer process automatically leave those bouncing members behind, or is there some way to de-select the 'bouncers' short of just deletng them all prior to starting the transfer to Groups.io?? All I see on the transfer start-up page here is 'Membership' and no breakdown of it.

I know there was something posted about this which was discussed recently but I cannot locate that thread, sorry.

OK ¡ª TIA
