Following in mobile interface

I see that I can "follow" in my email in my iPhone ?but sometimes I want to see where a thread is going before I decide to follow a topic ?but on the mobile interface I don't seem to be able to follow from the group site ??

I had to go back to my email to follow the thread ?

Did I just miss this?

Re: Should bouncing messages result in deletion of member from group?

J,

I don't have any bouncing members now so I can't check it out for
myself.
As it happens I do, in both my test and PTA groups. So the below are some observations based on those groups.

So, are bouncing members also removed from the member count?
They are not removed from the Home page count (it reports the total of bouncing and non-bouncing). So too the count in the list of Public Groups and the members' profile list.

They are (of course) removed from the counter at the top right of the Members list itself.

If they're not removed from the member count, that's wrong because
they're removed from the members list.
As I recall, whether or not to include bouncing members in the total (home page and other) membership count has been a contended question over the years in Yahoo! Groups.

Some have felt that including the deadwood (bouncing members) in the group's home page and directory listing misrepresented the group's actual reach, as compared to other groups. Said another way, it penalized groups whose management actively manage and trim their bouncing list versus groups whose management lets them accumulate.

In this regard another question arises with respect to members with "NC" status (I have some of them too). Like "Bounced" members they do not receive group messages, but there is not a separate list for them, they are shown on the main Members list. They also are included in the home page (and directory) total membership.

Bouncing members are now viewed separately and not part of the overall
list - seems wrong, especially if they're still counted in the members
count (which they should be)
An argument could be made that they should be excluded from the main list because they are not receiving group messages, and that there should be somewhere a way to see that specific information (a count of members eligible to receive group messages - "in good standing", so to speak).

I need to go research the actual distinction between "Bouncing" (blue B) and "Bounced" (red B), my memory of the exact details has faded. I know that Bounced members are no longer sent messages, whereas the Bouncing members are still provisional in some sense.

I think this should be reported to Mark.
Not very high on my list of things that need attention. I don't think I see anything here that I would classify as a bug, but there are inconsistencies and maybe those merit suggestions on beta.

That sounds similar to pending members, except that pending members are not counted in the overall member count. If bounced members are removed from the regular members list, it stands to reason that they should also be removed from the count, and this seems wrong.

So, are bouncing members also removed from the member count? Either way, I'd call it a flaw: if they're removed from the member count, that's wrong because they're still members of the group. If they're not removed from the member count, that's wrong because they're removed from the members list.

I think there are some confusing inconsistencies now:

  • Moderators can be viewed separately by clicking on 'moderators' but are still part of the overall list - seems fine, a nice convenience
  • Pending members are viewed separately (and not part of the complete list) by clicking on "pending" - seems fine, since they're not members of the group?
  • Bouncing members are now viewed separately and not part of the overall list - seems wrong, especially if they're still counted in the members count (which they should be)

I think this should be reported to Mark. I don't have any bouncing ?members now so I can't check it out for myself.

Re: Should bouncing messages result in deletion of member from group?

I just ran into this about a week ago. The member no longer shows on the Member page, but they're not removed from the group. They now only show up on the Bouncing page. Having them unbounce themselves will return them to the Members page. You may need to send a Bounce probe. This is different than it used to be where they were still on the Member page, but had a B next to their email address. I find it a bit confusing, but not really a problem since I now understand how it works.

Should bouncing messages result in deletion of member from group?

I am posing this question here to make sure I understand how this is supposed to work. ?We recently had an instance in which a member was (temporarily) in bounce status. ?This resulted in her name being removed from the member list by Groups.io (there was no action taken on our part to remove her). ?Since this is the first time I have noticed this happening, could someone please clarify if this is the way it is supposed to work. ?If it isn't then I'll report this as a bug.

Thanks, Duane. I always forget to hover. :-)

Re: complete date/time for specific member actions removed everywhere now?

On the Activity page, under Member Activity, mine shows the date they "applied for membership" on the right. By hovering over the date, it shows me the time.

complete date/time for specific member actions removed everywhere now?

J_catlady

Does anyone know if Mark has completely disabled the date/time entries for member actions (such as "applied for membership")? I need to know the date and time someone applied for membership, not just the date, since membership requires completion of a questionnaire within two days (48 hours). I can't find this any more in either the pending member's own activity log or the group's memer activity log.

And it did thread.

Interestingly, I did find another reply of yours which did not thread, and in that message there was both an In-Reply-To and a References field, but the value in those fields had nothing to do with the Message-ID of the message you replied to. I was kind of expecting that behavior to occur again.

Providing wrong field content is worse than not providing the field at all. I don't know if there is anything other than the passage of time (updates?) to account for the difference in Outlook's behavior.

If you want to poke at this some more we should move to shalstest@ so as not to bore the other members of GMF with test messages.

Re: Posting Limits

Shar,

Does IO have posting limits to try to weed out spammers and porn posts?
It does have posting limits, but the purpose is to suppress auto-responders. /g/beta/message/8326

Yahoo's limit was supposedly 50 posts (per member) per hour. I was told
that IO does and she thought it was 40. Also, if there are limits, are
they 40 posts per hour/per group?
The limit is 40 messages within 30 minutes. I'm not certain if it is per-group or just per-sender (including all groups).

It's always nice to know whatthe hourly/daily limits are to avoid the
spam/porn filters and getting one's account frozen or banned.
Unlike Yahoo Group's "auto-responder" lockout (that must be unlocked by Customer Care), I think the only consequence in Groups.io is an error bounce of your messages.

Re: Messages with the same Topic

Janice,

I just ran a test and replied via my email client--it posted as a
separate topic and then replied again directly from the group and that
one ended up within the original Topic.
Most likely that means that your email client isn't supplying either the In-Reply-To or References, or else Groups.io is having some trouble parsing those fields.

I use Outlook on a Windows 10 computer.
I don't use or know much about Outlook, but if you reply to this message the same way that you normally do in your other groups (that is, using Outlook rather than the Groups.io pages) I'll take a look at the View Source of your message and see if I can tell what's happening.

Re: daemon posting error

Ro,

Started a new group. Only one gal is having problems posting, getting a
Daemon message error. What might be the cause of this??
I think it is likely that she's sending to an incorrect email address. Errors from the "Mailer Daemon" are typically from one's own email system, saying that it had some problem attempting to deliver the message.

But the only way to know would be to read the error message and see what it says.

I am suspecting its not an IO issue, but what do I know.
I think it is most likely that your suspicion is correct.

Re: WIKI pages

J,

I've experienced this in a very bad way and have reported it to Mark as
a bug. In some cases, even if you try to reformat a section (e.g.,
change font size), it reverts back to the font it was in the pdf. The
only workaround I've found to that is to re-type the text in by hand.
That's unfortunate.

The Remove Font Style button (eraser, Ctrl+\) should be the work-around for that problem. If even it won't clear out the pasted formatting that's a problem.

I don't know if you tried it, but it may also be possible to clear out the pasted formatting by using Code View (the "</>" button), but that oughtn't be necessary - it requires some knowledge of HTML coding probably more than a little patience.

Re: WIKI pages

Janice,

Is it possible to add a PDF with screen shots as a GMF WIKI page?
Not directly. You can copy the content of a PDF and paste it in while editing a wiki page, but I think you'll lose the formatting of the PDF, and I don't know what might become of any images in the PDF if you try that. So there would likely be some formatting work to do after pasting in the content.

I don't understand much about WIKI. In my group it is used for LINKS
only to outside websites.
As LeeAnne said, the wiki pages are created and edited just like you would create or edit a message using the Groups.io site - almost exactly the same edit box and formatting tools. The pages are then saved in the Wiki section rather than being sent as messages.

One defect at present is that the formatting bar for Wiki pages currently lack the button to insert an image. It is possible to get images to display in the wiki pages by resorting to trickery. A tutorial for that might be in order, but I was rather hoping Mark would add the button instead.
/g/beta/message/8527

Maybe beta@ needs a new message, clearly stating that suggestion as a request.
