Re: Creating text files without uploading

Just tell them 'wiki' means 'file' in the groups.io 'dialect.' It's exactly the same thing.

My group is a bunch of old ladies (50 and older). They're not going to use a wiki to find files. To them, files should be in the files, not in the wiki. I'm not trying to be difficult, I just know my ladies.

Creating text files without uploading

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýThe first thing on my wish list is to be able to write txt files for the files portion of groups.io.? One of my members was going to add links to various websites for future reference and the only way they could be added is if you upload them from a file.? It would be so much easier to just create a text document and go.? I¡¯m not going to compare my wish to yahoo, yahoo is what drove me here and I don¡¯t want to repeat the same mistake twice. Re: Is there a way to find all the posts you or others have written?
Thank you all. As a moderator, I need all those things listed that it seems Mark is working on vis-¨¢-vis searching the message archive by author/ email address etc ( with actual links to the messages) or simply search results like the normal search function brings up. As a member of groups that I am not an admin on - it would indeed be nice to have a way to find my own posts. Maybe it'll just be via the advanced search option/ search by author when/if that gets fixed. Or as Shal suggests maybe an activity history tab/log? Maybe a listing of "MY POSTS" in one's profile? Visible to the member only? Maria |
Moderating etc on iPhone
Hi
Not sure why but there are no labels for all of the functions and features on my sites (and this one) on my iPhone. I have to click on blank lines and see what appears - calendar, files, etc. To send an invitation, I had to click around until I found the right spot. Anyone else seeing this? Frances |
Re: Is there a way to find all the posts you or others have written?
J,
Try doing a search on "By Shal Farley" and nothing will come up. MarkOh, I see. I suppose he meant that the search normally includes just the message body content, and he'll have to do some work to get it to include the Display Name (which comes from the sender's profile info, if any, rather than from the email message itself). Has that gone by the wayside in favor of using the "poster" keyword? No, I wouldn't think so. That may be why the poster keyword is undocumented. My guess is that's sort-of an "internal" thing, if anything perhaps a piece of some future "Advanced search" user interface (where it would be a fill-in box rather than a keyword). I would not describe having to know the email address as a "lesserI agree there, and I think Mark does too. He characterized it as an interim way to get the results you need today. I meant "lesser" in the sense that it is harder to find out that the poster keyword exists, and if you don't know that then knowing the member's email address is moot. Maybe "secondary" would have been better word or just "other". Shal |
Re: how to set up or create a new group
Marvin,
First time going to create a group. Using jaws 17, and windows 10 64I don't use Jaws or any other screen reader, so I can't tell you specifically what to expect from them. That said... If you are logged in to Groups.io at the top of any Groups.io page there is a bar which contains the Groups.io logo, a drop-list with a list your groups in it, and a "Find or Create a Group" link. Click that link to bring up a page with a list of groups (those which opted to be listed). The page will have two columns. The left column has buttons for arranging the group list by "Most Popular", "Most Active", "Newest", or "By Name". Under that is a "+ Create A Group" button. Click that to bring up the "Create A Group" form. The form has two text entry boxes, two drop-list options, and a "+Create Group" buton at the bottom. Don't click that button until you've filled in the text and chosen your options). The first text box is for the "Group Email Address" (also known as the group's name). This name will also be used in the group's web address. For example, this group's name is GroupManagersForum -- you enter the name without the rest of the email address (the text @groups.io is shown adjacent to the text entry box). The second text box is for the group "Description". It is a larger box, and has formatting tools similar to the message composition tools on the Groups.io site. The first drop-list is for "Privacy". It allows you to select whether the group's messages will be available to the public, or private (for members only); and also whether your group will be listed on that list of groups page. NOTE: If you select private archives a pop-up dialog will appear that warns you that this choice cannot be reversed later - once private the group's archives cannot be made public later. The second drop list is for "Create Sub Groups". It gives you control over who is allowed to create subgroups within your group. That's an advanced topic, but reversible later, so you may wish to select "Moderators and Owners" or "Owners Only" for now. Then Click the "+ Create Group" button. Then how to add other people as co-admins or co-owners.This works similarly to Yahoo Groups. You start by inviting those people to join your group. Once they are members you can use the Members list to accesse each person in turn and change their Role to "Moderator" or "Owner". If you select "Moderator" then there will be a list of checkboxes, which allow you to grant that person specific moderator permissions. First time doing that, then how to then send a message to everyone.Again this works just like Yahoo Groups. You can send an email to the group's email address, or you can go to the group's web pages and select "New Topic". Shal |

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýVickie, Every member will have access to every one of their posts, just like they do in yahoo, after Mark fixes the search bug. There's no need to give members access to their complete activity log for that and I would be *strongly* against giving them that, so much that it would almost be a deal breaker for me. I can see another fight coming on. Ask Mark to make it an option. That would be fine. Lol Sent from my iPhone On May 30, 2016, at 3:54 PM, vickie via <vickie_00@...> wrote:

The big problem is that it is completely undocumented. Along with any other keywords the search box may already allow. The lesser problem is that it requires knowing the poster's email address. J,? I wouldn't mind. It would be especially useful in freecycle groups. Members can search for anything offered , wanted or if it has already been taken. And according to some group guidelines the member itself ?would need to know when they ?last ?submitted the same offer or wanted so not to repeat ?the post in the same month.? .? ? Vickie ? Maria, You don't get just the posts, that's true. You get everything the member did. (I assume your apostrophe in "member's" was correctly placed, and you were referring to an individual member's activity log, not the overall activity log for all members.) I just don't see any problem here. Mark will add the functionality that Yahoo has to see all posts by a given member, and we'll be done. J |
