Re: How to add a ToC to your wiki pages
LeeAnne,
I tried to follow your directions for putting a ToC in a wiki page.Interesting. Did you perhaps make those paragraphs h4 style, and not have any h1, h2 or h3? I can reproduce your results that way, as long as I also set the number of levels up to 4. Any ideas what I need to do?Start at h1 style and descend from there? I know it looks huge, but that's what the TOC mechanism uses. Unfortunately the style selection in Groups.io's wiki is rather limited. I've just learned to live with it. A blatently missing piece is the photo insert toolbar button. Mark knows, but hasn't gotten the round tuit yet. You can use the code view tool to insert <img> tags that reference images hosted within the group or externally, but that's rather wonkish. Shal |
Re: New to the group.
Jill,
1. Am I correct in understanding there is no need to create any sort ofAn account is created for you automatically the first time you type in your email address (or send a +subscribe command by email, or reply to an invitation by email). E.g. As you know, with Yahoo you have to create a Yahoo account (unlessIn Groups.io whatever email address you use is your account ID for log in - you don't need to create a new account name or ID specific to Groups.io. I'm waffling but in short is this correct - you join groups IO with yourGroups.io doesn't run its own email service, so no you don't create a new email address there. You use whichever address at whatever service you prefer. A nifty feature of Groups.io is that you don't even need to set a password for yourself (though you can if you prefer to). When you type in your email address at the site you are prompted to verify your email address - the site sends you an email with a link in it. When you click that link you are logged into the site for 30 days. While you're logged in you can go to your profile and set a password if you like, or when your 30 days is up you can just have the site send you another login email. This is real handy on mobile devices, where typing a strong password can be a chore. 2. Can you attach photos to emails to send to the group?Yes, either posting by email or posting on site. Shal |
Re: New to the group.
David P. Dillard
Yahoo forces Group users for full participation in their Groups to have an Yahoo email account or Yahoo Group users will have problems. This is because email is a major Yahoo service and a way to get eyes to their advertising. To date, unless I have missed something, and I am certain I have not, Mark Fletcher is just running a Group service that is to date free and Groups.IO does not offer or outsource its email service. It simply does not have any email service and permits the use of any email server with lists on Groups.IO. You will also never find a Groups service in which the owner pays so much attention and communicates personally and on Beta and GroupManagers to solve the needs of his users. If you join and participate in Beta as I indicated to you privately earlier, you will learn a lot more about Groups.IO features, services and problemss as Beta is a very active group. I also think you would be hard pressed to find group owners who share as much information, ideas and wishes for service improvements as you will find here. If something is not working for you, you can speak up on one of these groups or to Mark in person and there is a good chance it will be changed, if it meets the needs of others as well or does not harm them and is within the realm of possibility. By the way did you find anything in the Google search link for Groups.IO that helped with instructions on how to use this service?

Thank you. I do like the look and feel of it all. I've read as much as I can and for now and I have two questions (I'm sure there will be more later!) 1. Am I correct in understanding there is no need to create any sort of account when joining? E.g. As you know, with Yahoo you have to create a Yahoo account (unless opting for email only) and you need to create a yahoo email address (even though there is the option to swop the email address over to your own once created). I'm waffling but in short is this correct - you join groups IO with your own email address simply and easily without needing to create any accounts or new email address? 2. Can you attach photos to emails to send to the group? Best wishes, Jill Sent from my iPad On 16 Jul 2016, at 01:13, Shal Farley <shals2nd@...> wrote: |
Re: New to the group.
Hi Jill and welcome!
There isn't anything as organized as an "Intro to Groups.io" document, but Groups.io does have a fledgling help system, the link to it is in the bottom bar of all Groups.io pages, the URL for it is: Unfortunately some of the information there is already out of date, so use with caution. It's a danger with a (relatively) rapidly evolving service. In fact an update to the look-and-feel of many aspects of the site was just pushed this afternoon, so that's even more likely. You can also find a grab-bag of information in GMF's wiki - it is our goal to be a helpful resource to Groups.io moderators and have information there that supplements what's in the site's Help system. For a link to the Wiki, see the list of group resources in the left column when you're in any group's pages. While you're visiting GMF's pages that list will be GMF's resources. The URL for GMF's wiki is: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Feel free to suggest more Wiki topics, or to write them! Writing a wiki page uses a composition window that's nearly identical to that used when composing a New Topic or Reply on site, so it is pretty easy to do. One informal convention you might see used when comparing Groups.io features to Yahoo Groups features is to "decorate" a group name to indicate which service. Hence I can say that in GMF@ the list of group resources is on the left, like classic Y!Groups, whereas at Y!GMF they are across a bar near the top, the "Neo" style. Shal |

Re: clearing custom invites
Hmm, looks like something got broken somewhere along the way. It used to be that as you typed in the Custom area, it changed in the Invitation box above so you could see what it looked like. I can get rid of it in the Custom box by refreshing the page in the browser, but it never disappears from the Invitation box and comes back next time I go to the Invite page. Looks like a problem for Support.

Re: Do message #'s stay the same when you transfer from Y!?
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýOddly enough I had reason to search back in my group archives recently. They go back to 1999 so even before Yahoo groups took over. What surprised me was that although the posts are numbered they are not in numerical order but in places randomly organised. Is there a limit to the number of posts that can be transferred I was wondering? Re: Member has joined but no confirmation email sent
Thanks Duane and Shal. It seems what has happened is that either she didn't get the confirmation email or deleted it by accident, without activating the account(?).?I didn't have her check the trash and should be flogged for that sloppiness. Now she "can't" activate it, so she joined with her husband's gmail account. . ? She has activated that account so I guess all is good, but what if this problem crops up again? ?Is there a way to re-send an activate account email? ? Is there a way she can un-register the hotmail email address from Groups.io and then re-register it so she doesn't have to use her husband's email? ?Or would it just be easier to have her change the email addy in her profile? -- ?Archivist |
Re: Member has joined but no confirmation email sent
LeeAnne,
A member is not receiving email from groups.io. A search for her emailThat's odd all by itself. Is there any chance of a subtle typo in her email address? That could explain both why search didn't find her and why she's not receiving messages. Her Email Delivery History says, no email deliveries, no RecentThat's also odd if there have been messages posted in the group recently, and after she joined. The only things I can think of which might account for that would be having her Email Delivery set to "Special Notice" or "No Email", or under Advanced Preferences having her Message Selection set to "Following Only" with no threads followed. even though I sent, and she received, her an email this morning using theI don't think those are bounce-tracked, only group postings. They undoubtedly ought to be. Also the various notifications moderators get ought to be bounce-tracked, but aren't as far as I know. I tried deleting the membership and had her try again but she was toldThat means her email address is associated with a Groups.io account, but it doesn't mean that she is (or is not) a member of your group. As Duane said, now she needs to join the group, but does not need to re-confirm her email address. Assuming she's typing her address correctly on the web interface. Shal |
Member has joined but no confirmation email sent
A member is not receiving email from groups.io. A search for her email addy in the members section did not show her as a member yesterday but I flipped through and found her manually. Her Email Delivery History says, no email deliveries, no Recent unsuccessful attempts, no bounces - even though I sent, and she received, her an email this morning using the groups.io email from the web.? I tried deleting the membership and had her try again but she was told the email was already registered.? any ideas how I can help this member? -- ?Archivist |
