Seems like we have two different use cases. I'd like a field that I
can search on and email this subset of members. But your use case of
just 'additional information' on members, and let them fill in what
fields they wish.
Yes, yours is moderator's info for actions, mine was info for all members. Of course I'd still like to be able to search mine.

I'm a lot less certain about enabling members to take actions like emailing the subset found by search. That could be powerful but it could also be disruptive in some groups.

Your examples make me think - One implementation could be to create a
default database for each group created called 'members'. Tie it to
the member list, but we could add any fields we wanted to.
That's yet another good idea.

I think, rather than making it a default database, I'd have a new column type that ties to the email addresses in the Members list. Adding a column of that type to a table would enable the linked functionality (auto-populate a row for each member).

This also addresses the member/mod visibility question by making it the table creator's choice. We'd likely need to think about whether the address field should have its own visibility control for member/mods - as I suspect my case for allowing members to see each other's addresses is the rarer case.

If a member went away the entry in this database would go away.
That's one feature I would *not* like. And it has been one of the reasons I've not worked out a proposal in detail. I hate the idea that I'd lose information just because a member took the (all too common) approach of changing their email address by unsubscribe/resubscribe.

Premium groups have a "Past" members list which retains information about members who've left or been removed. I'd like a table like this to retain rows for "past" members, but marked somehow as such. However this may encroach on the Premium feature so I'm not sure Mark would go for it.

(Now I wonder if this is become implementation gone wild. :-)
Maybe. Once you start down the direction of creating relational tables it seems like things could get wild pretty quickly. But then the whole site is built on database queries, if I understand correctly, so it may not get as wild as I think (databases are not my specialty). Perhaps it would primarily be a question of user interface complexity, and that's what would most likely impact Mark's willingness to implement.

I'm up for anything in beta - depends if you want to try a simple use
case though (make notes searchable) or something more involved and
database-like
Go ahead and suggest what is right for your use cases. I'll chime in there or not, or maybe make my own suggestion if I feel inspired. Groups.io already has a lengthy to-do list, even in the Database column, but I think we have to trust to Mark's judgment about implementation priorities.

More usefully, IFTTT is ¡°if this, then that¡±, a workflow/sequencing service. Their website is not helpful in understanding it, but the Wikipedia page is a decent description.

If that person is already a member on io, nothing is copied.? If they're not on io, all of their settings are copied.? There will be one entry per email address, which is how members are identified.? If they are a member here, but used a different email address, they will have another entry.

I think you mean a subgroup.? You can have as many on a free group as you want.? Storage is allocated per main group, so all the items that use it in subgroups will count against the total.? You create subgroups using the menu for administrators.

Hashtags don't count against storage.

This isn't currently an option.? It is on Mark's TODO list at some point.

Only photos in the Wiki take storage space, text doesn't.

After the option became available, I set my groups to resize photos (on the Settings page) to 312x312.? One group currently has 546 photos, taking up 25MB.? That means I should be able to have about 20,000 photos, if I only stored photos.? Since I also use files and other things that use storage, it will be somewhat less.

You'd need to delete photos manually.? There's not currently a way to do bulk deletes (other than deleting an entire album), so it can be time consuming.? Bulk delete is also on the TODO list.? (BTW, this is a user-to-user group, not an official support group of io, so we can't do anything you can't.)

OK, I found the Notes field, but when you do a Search it doesn't search said notes field.? But as you suggest you could put the Notes in the drop-down; that might be useful

There is one "extra" field. If you open a member's page there's the "Notes" tab.

Alas, that feature is rather out-of-sight-out-of-mind right now, there's no indication given in the list that it holds content, and there are no notifications when a moderator updates that field. At least the update does get logged in the Moderator Activity log.

I've often wished for functionality like this, but I've never come up with a proposed "best" way to do it.

Just adding more fields to the Members list is one approach. But it can make that list cluttered, which could ultimately be an impediment to its primary use cases. Maybe there would be a clever way to manage what is shown when there are too many columns to fit the user's window; a bit like Excel's split and/or freeze features.

I've also thought of having it be another selector, "Notes", in the Members list view button that currently selects Members, Moderators, Pending, Bouncing, or Banned. When "Notes" is selected then the custom fields are shown rather than the standard fields. But I think you'd have to have at least the email field automatically included, or both email and Display name. So you rapidly run into the same width problem as having them in the primary members list.

A pro or con of those ideas (depending on your use case) is that it would be available only to moderators.

Possibly one could do a similar thing built on the member Directory so that it could be made available to members if desired. In my classmate groups it would be desirable to allow members to add their current address, phone number, nick-name in school, activities, or other information to help everyone remember them. Even a second "then" picture to go with their current profile photo/avatar.

It sounds like you have the address wrong, and/or are not logged in
to Groups.io. Try going here:

/

If that page shows you a list of your group memberships then click on
the group you wish to visit.

If that page shows you general information about Groups.io then you
are not logged in. When you log in, be sure to use the same email address that you used when you created your group. Then go back to that page.

Creating a subgroup does change the address (both web and email) for
your group, but the old address should still work - it should automatically redirect you to the new address. And in any case, the group should be in your group list (at the link above).


It seemed like address was resolved by DNS but was still unknown to server. Some time later it settled and group is now accessible.

If you are inviting people to an event then that should be all you need to do. When editing the event, in the Notifications section at the bottom, checking "Send Invite To Group" causes a message to be posted in your group immediately when you click the Add Event button.

What showed up was a button, outlined in grey, within it was a blue
outlined page, with one corner turned down.

Correct. That ICS file is a standard format, members with a compatible personal calendar should be able to import that file to add your event to their calendar.

As the owner of the group I tried in my personal email to open it, and
it would not.
Interesting. Do you have a personal calendar as part of your AOL subscription? If not that could be the problem. Or maybe AOL's calendar doesn't support ICS files. I don't use AOL so I don't know how to advise you.

I believe that other email interfaces, such as Yahoo Mail, Gmail, or even the Thunderbird email client would offer to add the ICS file to your personal calendar.

If you use a calendar that isn't integrated with your email interface you ought to be able to save that ICS file, and then import it in your calendar. Not as simple as just clicking on it, but possibly easier and less error-prone than manually copying the info into your calendar.

Go to your group list here: /

There will be an "Owner" or "Mod" badge next to any groups you are owner or
mod for. If you have neither badge next to the group name in question then
that group's owner (or a sufficiently permitted mod) will need to promote
you.

If instead of a list of groups that page shows you general info about
Groups.io then you are not logged in. You will need to log in (using the
email address which is registered in the group) and then go back to that
page.

"Directory"? Do you mean that or do you mean the group's Members list?
You can't use the Directory to remove anyone, so you must mean the Members
list. Go to the group and (if you are at least a moderator) you should see
an "Admin" item in the left column. Click on that to expand the Admin
controls for the group; the Members list is one of the items there.

I'm again at a loss to understand what you're trying to say. But maybe that
will be moot once you go to your group list and check whether you have the
appropriate badge there.

It doesn't sound to me like this is an issue that needs Mark's attention. I
think you're in the right place.

Try these steps:

o Use the groups list to verify whether you are a mod or owner.
o Click on the group name in that list to get to the group.
o Click on Admin to open up the Admin links o Click on Members to see the
members list.

At this point the Members page may be showing you the Members list, or the
list of Pending members if there are any. If the button at the top of the
list says "Pending Approval" click on it, and select "Members"
instead.

o Use the Search box to find the member you wish to remove, or
scroll down the list to find the member, if the list isn't too long.
o Click the check box next to the member's name o In the Actions menu at
the bottom of the page select "Remove".

I don't know what you're looking at there, but I don't think you're using
the word Profile correctly - as that would have to do with your own
subscription, not with admin control over your group.
