Re: Comments on photos

I have to confess I and my members also miss the comments feature. I get off list messages, mags please enable comments for photos, so I respond with, sorry it simply isn't in my power to do that, sigh, despite all the moans we had about Yahoo groups, it did spoil us.

Re: How do you get members to join your group?

I started a Yahoo group in 2004, did a short 'about' write up outlining what was offered, would be subscribers had to send a brief message saying why they wanted to join. Within a week I had a dozen members, growth was slow, but gradually as word spread within the area my group covered, the dozen became 2500. In 2004 my area of interest existed in a small niche software market, machine embroidery software, I made videos showing how a small selection of the programs worked and how to use them. As a listed group I attracted 'freeby hunters', and group collectors, one boasted she belonged to over 100 groups, so in 2007 I altered the group to be an unlisted one, sent mails at weekly intervals stating I would remove all 'special' notices members, ( treat all members as vips so 'special Notices' members never got information) permanent bouncers, anyone that didn't respond with I want to continue my membership by a given date. They had 2 months to decide. I culled the membership to 700, was unlisted, put all members on permanent moderation, appointed 2 moderators, and made membership by invitation only.?
I made the move to Groups.io Dec 31st, informed my members, asked them to let me know if they wanted to be part of the move, they have until Feb 28th to make up their minds, on March 1st I will simply delete the old group. After I unlisted my Yahoo group all new member requests came via existing member requests. I intend to stick with the same procedure here in Groups.io, I neither desire or want members that are not interested in learning how to improve their skill set, offer support and encouragement to fellow old and new members. If what you offer via your group proves to be of value, word of mouth becomes a great marketing tool, but be warned as word of mouth can also destroy a group if members feel a group doesn't fulfil its members needs. So far my new group here has 124 members, it will grow slowly but that's what I want, I have no desire to own the biggest group there is, I want my members to enjoy their membership experience.? |
Cannot access group I just created
#groupowner
Hi,
I am new to this. I just created my first group and set it to bi private. It seems it is not visible even for me. I just get error Hmm. We¡¯re having trouble finding that site. We can¡¯t connect to the server at ... I mean I cannot even access group administration. Actually, after I created group it seemed normal, but then I decided to set how subgroups work, and created subgroup which I also set to be private. After that I was unable to access group or subgroup. I cannot even access to delete group to start over. Is this a bug or I did something wrong? |
Re: WordPress blog integration with Groups.io group?

Has there been any thought/discussion to add one (or more) fields to the member information?
Not trying to turn the member list into a full-out database - but for some lists it's nice to have one more bit of information about a person.? ?What street you live on for the neighborhood list.? What your plot number is for the community garden list.? ?Stuff like that.? I could certainly add a database, but that would have to be maintained separate from the list membership, which will end up being out of sync over time.?? Couldn't find anything searching old topics - is this wish list worthy? - John Mc |
Re: moving a message to a different subgroup
I didn't say it would be easy.? ?:-) But that is a challenge - the Web UI is so good you can almost forget this is an email list - so even if yu move a message, the next reply to an old message would go back to the same place.? ? Perhaps forwarding to the 'other' list is the best solution, as replies would start ending up in the correct bin. - John Mc On Tue, Jan 9, 2018 at 1:41 AM, Shal Farley <shals2nd@...> wrote: John, |

I get new members via other members in the group. |
Hi, new to groups.io, need assistance please
I have been reading the updates since they began and saw you can send invites. anyone know how?
I tried putting something on a calendar page, then it was sent to members. What showed up was a button, outlined in grey, within it was a blue outlined page, with one corner turned down. Below this was the link? invite.ics As the owner of the group I tried in my personal email to open it, and it would not. Here, in this message i clicked on it and it gave me a OPEN LINK , but again, nothing happened. Please, help if you can, I want to move my yahoo group here, but first need to learn more. Re: question about banning a member for all of your groups
Hi Sarah, I believe there is no way to ban anyone permanently, unless you have a group that is membership by invitation only & you have to know the person outside of the group, then you already have the ability to keep someone out. Otherwise, all the banned member has to do is get a new email address and apply for membership. Paul, Ohio, USA

Re: owners banning owners
Yup,
Yahoo allowed owners to ban owners. We had one of our colleagues literally go bananas and send "shouting" messages to us when we asked why he bugged a member the way he did, forcing her to leave. The message to us were full of 30 font curses, etc. Two of us had to coordinate removing him from more than one group and other secure access assets by telephone after actually making a script detailing what to do in order. Otherwise he would have banned one or more of us while we were processing things if he got even a hint. -- Bob Bellizzi The Corneal Dystrophy Foundation |
owners banning owners
Can an owner ban another owner? Or demote them to regular member?
I just wondered how this works on groups.io. I can see this being a problem in some groups but didn't know how this works. Donald The further a society drifts from truth the more it will hate those who speak it. --George Orwell |
Wanting to set a hashtag for an event (so that it could e.g. be muted), I just added it at the end of the event name, thus "Another Test Event #Test", as I would to the subject of an ordinary message, but it did not take effect as expected - it just had the hashtag '#cal-reminder' on the reminder message, when I expected it to have '#Test' also.?
Should I be doing something different? Or have I found a bug? I think it used to work that way (see handling of 'Group Managers Forum subscription reminder #admin' monthly event in this group). Jeremy |
Re: question about banning a member for all of your groups
You should only need to ban them from the main group.? They would have to be a member of that to get into a subgroup.? That would cut down on the number of steps you have to take.? I doubt that there will ever be a way to apply any action to members of multiple main groups.

Re: Digest vs Summary
Nancy,
Is it it the same for summaries? No, Summaries are once per day regardless of the amount of traffic in the group. For GMF mine have been arriving around 6 am U.S. Pacific time. I don't know if that's true of all groups. We are trying to determine if a Digest is generated after so manyBoth. To amplify on what J said, for Digests it is once per day, plus once per 12 messages if there are more than 12 in the day. For GMF my dailies have been arriving around 10:15 pm U.S. Pacific time. Example: 18 messages posted will generate 2 digests a day.Correct. A digest of 12 when twelve have accumulated, and a digest of 6 at the end of the "day". NOTE: Digests need not be the same for all members. If a member has muted a topic or hashtag then his/her digest(s) will contain fewer messages. In your example, that member may reach a total of 12 later in the day than other members, or might not reach it at all and receive only one digest. Or even none if all of that day's messages were in topics or hashtags muted by that member. Likewise, members using advanced subscription preferences to receive only messages they follow will have fewer messages than those members who receive all messages. Shal |
