Some questions

? We wish to be very prepared for questions from our members when we launch CampOn. Here are things we are not sure of. Thank you for your answers.?

1. If a person is already a member of CampOn and is a moderator or owner, does their moderator status result in a duplicate entry in CampOn?
2. Is the record of an owner transferred along with their membership from Camp2 to CampOn?
3. Is a sub-domain free? If it has photos are they counted in our 1 GB allotment? Do we just sign up for one as we signed up for Groups.io?
4. Do hash tags take up memory?
5. In our yahoo group we approve photos, but we cannot find a place to approve them in CampOn. Are we missing something?
6. We are unfamiliar with wiki, although I just read a description of it. My reaction is we do not need it. Any thoughts on that? Our members are older, mostly, and some can barely handle email. Does wiki take up some of our memory?
7. Could you give us an estimate of how many photos would fit in 1 GB when they are reduced to?about the 300x300?level? This is the only sticking point I can see with our members, but we do plan to explain to them that this is not a site for photo storage, just for photo sharing, and deletion when we need more space. But an estimate would help.
8. Is there a way to delete photos by date they were put on Camp.on? As in deleting oldest ones first? And do you offer that service, or do we delete them ourselves?
9. Do hashtags take up some of our memory? I know that files and databases do. We will not be allowing attachments.

Re: Additional member attribute(s) #suggestion

OK, I found the Notes field, but when you do a Search it doesn't search said notes field.? But as you suggest you could put the Notes in the drop-down; that might be useful

Seems like we have two different use cases.? ? ?I'd like a field that I can search on and email this subset of members.? ?But your use case of just 'additional information' on members, and let them fill in what fields they wish.

Your examples make me think - One implementation could be to create a default database for each group created called 'members'.? Tie it to the member list, but we could add any fields we wanted to.? If a member went away the entry in this database would go away.? Database could have the standard 'choose visibility' settings? (Now I wonder if this is become implementation gone wild.? :-)

I'm up for anything in beta - depends if you want to try a simple use case though (make notes searchable) or something more involved and database-like

There is one "extra" field. If you open a member's page there's the "Notes" tab.

Alas, that feature is rather out-of-sight-out-of-mind right now, there's no indication given in the list that it holds content, and there are no notifications when a moderator updates that field. At least the update does get logged in the Moderator Activity log.

I've often wished for functionality like this, but I've never come up with a proposed "best" way to do it.

Just adding more fields to the Members list is one approach. But it can make that list cluttered, which could ultimately be an impediment to its primary use cases. Maybe there would be a clever way to manage what is shown when there are too many columns to fit the user's window; a bit like Excel's split and/or freeze features.

I've also thought of having it be another selector, "Notes", in the Members list view button that currently selects Members, Moderators, Pending, Bouncing, or Banned. When "Notes" is selected then the custom fields are shown rather than the standard fields. But I think you'd have to have at least the email field automatically included, or both email and Display name. So you rapidly run into the same width problem as having them in the primary members list.

A pro or con of those ideas (depending on your use case) is that it would be available only to moderators.

Possibly one could do a similar thing built on the member Directory so that it could be made available to members if desired. In my classmate groups it would be desirable to allow members to add their current address, phone number, nick-name in school, activities, or other information to help everyone remember them. Even a second "then" picture to go with their current profile photo/avatar.

I'd say yes. We could kick it around here some more if you like, or just go for it in beta.

It sounds like you have the address wrong, and/or are not logged in
to Groups.io. Try going here:

/

If that page shows you a list of your group memberships then click on
the group you wish to visit.

If that page shows you general information about Groups.io then you
are not logged in. When you log in, be sure to use the same email address that you used when you created your group. Then go back to that page.

Creating a subgroup does change the address (both web and email) for
your group, but the old address should still work - it should automatically redirect you to the new address. And in any case, the group should be in your group list (at the link above).

It seemed like address was resolved by DNS but was still unknown to server. Some time later it settled and group is now accessible.

Thanks.

Re: Hi, new to groups.io, need assistance please

Cara,

I have been reading the updates since they began and saw you can send
invites. anyone know how?

I tried putting something on a calendar page, then it was sent to
members.
If you are inviting people to an event then that should be all you need to do. When editing the event, in the Notifications section at the bottom, checking "Send Invite To Group" causes a message to be posted in your group immediately when you click the Add Event button.

What showed up was a button, outlined in grey, within it was a blue
outlined page, with one corner turned down.
Below this was the link invite.ics
Correct. That ICS file is a standard format, members with a compatible personal calendar should be able to import that file to add your event to their calendar.

As the owner of the group I tried in my personal email to open it, and
it would not.
Interesting. Do you have a personal calendar as part of your AOL subscription? If not that could be the problem. Or maybe AOL's calendar doesn't support ICS files. I don't use AOL so I don't know how to advise you.

I believe that other email interfaces, such as Yahoo Mail, Gmail, or even the Thunderbird email client would offer to add the ICS file to your personal calendar.

If you use a calendar that isn't integrated with your email interface you ought to be able to save that ICS file, and then import it in your calendar. Not as simple as just clicking on it, but possibly easier and less error-prone than manually copying the info into your calendar.

Go to your group list here: /

There will be an "Owner" or "Mod" badge next to any groups you are owner or
mod for. If you have neither badge next to the group name in question then
that group's owner (or a sufficiently permitted mod) will need to promote
you.

If instead of a list of groups that page shows you general info about
Groups.io then you are not logged in. You will need to log in (using the
email address which is registered in the group) and then go back to that
page.

> ... and I am not able to see the directory (read the directory) ...

"Directory"? Do you mean that or do you mean the group's Members list?
You can't use the Directory to remove anyone, so you must mean the Members
list. Go to the group and (if you are at least a moderator) you should see
an "Admin" item in the left column. Click on that to expand the Admin
controls for the group; the Members list is one of the items there.

> ... because it says that I have to change my profile settings?

I can't make any sense of this statement. I'd need to know what page you
were on to have a clue what "it" said that, and what it might have meant.

> So I have. I am currently on owner and mods only and since that does >
not work I am assuming that my owner is having difficulty trying to > make
me moderator.

I'm again at a loss to understand what you're trying to say. But maybe that
will be moot once you go to your group list and check whether you have the
appropriate badge there.

> I have and she has tried to locate Mark and I know with the holidays >

It doesn't sound to me like this is an issue that needs Mark's attention. I
think you're in the right place.

Try these steps:

o Use the groups list to verify whether you are a mod or owner.
o Click on the group name in that list to get to the group.
o Click on Admin to open up the Admin links o Click on Members to see the
members list.

At this point the Members page may be showing you the Members list, or the
list of Pending members if there are any. If the button at the top of the
list says "Pending Approval" click on it, and select "Members"
instead.

o Use the Search box to find the member you wish to remove, or
scroll down the list to find the member, if the list isn't too long.
o Click the check box next to the member's name o In the Actions menu at
the bottom of the page select "Remove".

> It just show myself and it says 1 out of 36 but just myself.

> Even if I change the profile to group members, still nothing

I don't know what you're looking at there, but I don't think you're using
the word Profile correctly - as that would have to do with your own
subscription, not with admin control over your group.

Good point about the mobile web browser. But what we have going on is several people that don't ever check their emails but text constantly all day long. So never respond to email and miss notifications. As you can probably guess, this is the younger members of our group.

The key is the "From" address. It must match the subscribed address or else the reply will be rejected as "not a member" (unless your group allows non-members to post). If that's what happened you should see a "Non-member" entry in the group's Message Activity log for the attempt.

If you find that entry make note of the exact email address reported. You can (when logged in under the subscribed address) add that sending address as an Email Alias on the Subscribed address' Account page, Login section. It is under the "Advanced Settings" expander at the bottom.

If the email gateway always sends replies with that same address then those should post as if posted under the subscribed address.

If your device has a mobile web browser it may be fair to ask why you're bothering with SMS rather than just using an email service. But to each his own.? ;-)

I don't know.

It has been ages (when I owned a basic flip-phone) since I've tried using a carrier's SMS gateway with an email list (a Yahoo Group). I seem to recall that I made it work, sort-of, but it wasn't very useful. Something like the 160 character limit was all consumed by the email address and other stuff, leaving no room for the message text itself.

In Groups.io the first challenge would be getting the gateway address confirmed - you'd have to be able to reply to the confirmation message and I think that was a sticking point. Or, if you have a premium group you could avoid that problem by using Direct Add.

If you run the experiment and get a useful result that would be a nice how-to article to post here, and/or in GMF's Wiki.
